$9.69 Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks with folded-in alto and trumpet and witty counterpoint. ...
| | Charles Tolliver Big Band Emperor March: Live At The Blue Note CD (2009)
Healing Space album
$13.45 After recording a number of albums during the 1960s and '70s, trumpeter Charles Tolliver waited nearly two decades to record as a leader before he released his striking big-band date With Love in 2007. This 2009 release, recorded live at the Blue Note, is a potent follow-up, though with substantial changes in personnel. His exotic, dramatic "On the Nile" might suggest the influence of McCoy Tyner's works of the '70s, though it was premiered in 1965 by Jackie McLean and previously recorded by its composer in a big-band setting a few years later. This updated version showcases tenorist Marcus Strickland, pianist Stanley Cowell, and the leader in a fiery performance. Tolliver's imaginative scoring of brass and reeds in his "Emperor ...

| | Maynard Ferguson Verve Jazz Masters 52 CD (1996)
Healing Space music CDs
$9.59 Recorded in Los Angeles, California; New York, New York and Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California between 1951 and 1957. Includes liner notes by Bill Kirchner.
The first half of this Verve compilation emphasizes the small group recordings of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, while the latter half of the disc features scaled-down big-band selections. Although there are beautiful arrangements here by Bill Holman and Willie Maiden, much of this music still revolves around individual soloists, rather than section work or complex, weighty compositions.
The album's opener, "King's Riff," sees Ferguson performing with a quintet. On this tune, Ben Webster's dark, smoky tenor-saxophone playing contrasts with Ferguson's bright, brassy tone. Other highlights include the high-energy "Love Me or Leave Me" and the equally lively "Easy to Love." On the latter, the light ensemble work is tempered by vigorous bop solos from pianist Bobby Timmons and alto saxophonist Jimmy Ford. Ferguson himself plays an uncharacteristically delicate muted trumpet solo on this standard. The ...
