Puerto Rican duo Wisin y Yandel have been at the forefront of the reggaeton movement since PA'L MUNDO dropped in 2005, and the equally fiery WISIN Y YANDEL PRESENTAN: LOS VAQUEROS followed in 2006. Given their upsurge in popularity, it seemed only a matter of time until the duo released their respective solo projects, and Yandel got the jump on his partner with 2007's QUIEN CONTRA MI. Fortunately, all the hallmarks of Wisin y Yandel are present: superior production, booming beats, skittering dancehall rhythms, catchy hooks, and sharp mic skills. In the post-Otis Redding R&B world of the early 1970s, Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams emerged as one of the true originals of American soul, with a left-of-center, often political bent that still left plenty of room for impassioned vocal performances. But before he became the Dogg, Williams was a producer for a variety of labels in the `60s, and BLAME IT ON THE DOGG cherry-picks some of the finest examples of his work in that capacity, including tunes by icons like Gene Pitney, Gary U.S. Bonds, and Z.Z. Hill as well as more obscure artists (Tommy Hunt, Eleanor Grant, Little Charles & the Sidewinders). Put these alongside some early (mostly pre-Dogg) cuts by Williams himself, and you've got a captivating portrait of the Dogg's early career on both sides of the microphone.
Since 1970, Jerry Williams has been living a double life -- by day, he writes songs and produces records for some of the leading lights of soul and R&B, while by night he makes his own gloriously eccentric albums as Swamp Dogg, the man who promised and delivered Total Destruction to Your Mind. Blame It on the Dogg: The Swamp Dogg Anthology 1968-1978 is a compilation that for once honors both sides of this man's split personality, featuring a few of Williams' own recordings as Swamp Dogg alongside a healthy variety of selections he wrote and/or produced for other acts.
