| | J Dilla Ruff Draft CD J Dilla Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Originally released independently in 2003 on vinyl, the late J Dilla's RUFF DRAFT returns in 2007 as an expanded double album (the second disc is instrumentals) on Stones Throw. In hindsight, RUFF DRAFT clearly marks a pivotal point in Dilla's creative evolution, displaying a nascent interest in zooming early-hip-hop synthesizers and a plethora of soul loops and samples. These tendencies would come into full fruition in CHAMPION SOUND, his later collabo with Madlib, and in his 2006 masterpiece, DONUTS. J handles the rhymes (and some crooning) on most tracks, though Guilty Simpson makes an appearance, but it's the production wizardry that makes this album something special.

Recording information: Studio A, Dearborn, MI.Spin (p.88) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] platform for the versatility of his eccentric genius." The Wire (p.67) - "[This] recording contains some of his finest and most immediate work....'Nothing Like This' is the winning moment, a beautifully naive love song over a dreamy reversed guitar sample sass." The Wire (p.55) - "Ditching studio sheen for layers of tape hiss and rugged snare hits, the rough hewn arrangements complement the album's lyrical motifs." CMJ (p.6) - "Dilla's fiercely chopped production integrates punk, industrial and techno with ease." CMJ (p.44) - "[The album plays] on Dilla's strengths as a performer..." Ruff Draft
$12.75 Donuts was made on a hospital bed and in a home studio, on a stripped-down setup with a stack of vinyl. Released on its maker's 32nd birthday, three days before he passed away, the album has a resonance deeper than anyone could've hoped for or even imagined. Some who were close to Dilla have said that there are hidden messages in the samples, the track titles, and who knows where else. It's impossible not to speculate about some things, like the track titled "Don't Cry," the looped "broken and blue" from a version of "Walk on By," the presence of Eddie Kendricks singing "My people, hold on," or the fact that there are 31 tracks, a possible signal that Dilla survived a little longer than he expected. Then again, for every possible message, there are two or three elements that could've been designed to throw any analysis off its trail. After all, if there's one single image that the disc brings to mind, it's that of Dilla goofing off, having fun with some of his favorite records, and messing with some heads in the process. (And you could probably make the album's title out to be a metaphor for the circle of life, but sometimes a donut is just a donut.) Armed with sources that are either known to novice sample spotters or only the most seasoned diggers -- surprisingly, the former greatly outweighs the latter -- Dilla's also just as likely to leave his samples barely touched as he is to render them unrecognizable. It's fitting that Motown echoes, a predominant theme, are often felt, from the use of Dionne Warwick's Holland-Dozier-Holland-written "You're Gonna Need Me" (on "Stop"), to the shifting waves of percussion plucked from Kendricks' "People... Hold On" (on "People"), to the Stevie-like piano ...

| | El-P I'll Sleep When You're Dead CD (2007)
Ruff Draft
$12.29 On his highly anticipated release, I'LL SLEEP WHEN YOU'RE DEAD, New York indie rap hero and the man behind Definitive Jux delivers just what rap fans have come to expect--namely, a hodge-podge of space-age, boundary-pushing production wizardry and stream-of-consciousness lyricism laced with paranoid Philip K. Dick-inspired imagery. Most impressive here is how El-P manages to seamlessly fit his futuristic sonic tools into a strictly roots hip-hop format. The end result is a sound more akin to Schooly D and Run DMC than, say, DJ Spooky or Dan the Automator, and as such I'LL SLEEP WHEN YOU'RE DEAD is almost a stylistic throwback--in the same way that STAR WARS was to BUCK ROGERS. El-P proves that he's still the best there is at what he does, though what he does is as hard to pin down as ever. Aesop Rock, Cat Power, the Mars Volta, Cage, and Trent Reznor make up the eclectic guest list.

| | Evidence Weatherman CD (2007)
Ruff Draft
$12.35 Evidence, one-third of the esteemed underground rap group Dilated Peoples, makes the most of his solo debut album, The Weatherman LP. He retains the best aspect of his group efforts, the outstanding productions. But just as importantly, he ditches the most played-out aspect of Dilated Peoples, their back-to-basics conservatism in the face of changing times and trends. Consequently, The Weatherman LP is the freshest Dilated Peoples album, and certainly the most compelling from start to finish, since the good old days of Expansion Team (2001). As always, the Alchemist is a chief contributor, responsible for the beats on five of the album's 16 songs. "Letyourselfgo" is one of his strongest productions here; however, "Chase the Clouds Away" is his key contribution, the one sunny song on this otherwise stormy album. Evidence produces a few tracks himself, and Dilated Peoples colleague Babu handles a few too, most notably "A Moment in Time," which boasts some phenomenal turntable cuts. Sid Roams, Jake One, and DJ Khalil are also credited with beat-making. The productions are the highlight of The Weatherman LP, of course, as they are on all Dilated Peoples efforts, but the rapping here is thematically notable, if sometimes unimpressive from a technical standpoint. Evidence keeps his themes personal throughout, addressing his view points and feelings openly. You learn more about Michael Perretta, aka the Weatherman, on this one album than on all four Dilated Peoples albums to date combined. He raps about his upbringing ("Born in LA"), his recently passed-away mother ("I Still ...
