On its second full-length outing for Fat Wreck Chords, THIS SINKING SHIP, Smoke or Fire expands on its impressive debut by opting for catchy hooks over sheer force. The Boston-via-Richmond hardcore act showcases its newfound melodicism throughout SHIP, most notably on "The Patty Hearst Syndrome," a surging, guitar-fueled anthem that recalls revered groups such as Pennywise and Gorilla Biscuits.
Recording information: Atlas Studios, Chicago, IL (09/2006-10/2006).

Alternative Press (p.132) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "With bopping, aggressive songs rooted in the heyday of melodic hardcore punk, THIS SINKING SHIP is the finest release yet from Richmond Virginia's Smoke Or Fire." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[T]hey're clearly fuelled by passion and generate energy to spare." This Sinking Ship album
$17.39 A truly neglected classic, 999's eponymous debut album was issued in March, 1978, on the back of three stunning 45s -- the romping "I'm Alive," the anthemic "Nasty Nasty," and the oddly ambitious "Me and My Desire." The first and last of these appeared on the album, together with the summer smash that never was, June, 1978's, "Emergency," and it is with these tracks as its benchmarks that 999 should be judged. ...

This Sinking Ship CD music
$10.79 Psychobilly. By its very name it's a kick in the pants, an emphatic wallop that metes out harmony between the greasers and punks by the thrum of standup bass. HorrorPops made a real impression with Hell Yeah, their Epitaph debut, and 2005's Bring It On! also delivers soundly. The band never gets carried away with establishing a rabid, rapid pace, or the genre's obsession with grabby ghouls and pools of blood. That stuff's in there, but it's cut with Patricia Day's endearing "girl group gone a little bad" lead vocals and dynamic songwriting that finds the most effective way to combine rockabilly thump with punk swagger, instead of the most obvious one. And HorrorPops aren't two-dimensional. While the cleverly self-referential stance of the Ramones and the Misfits forever lurks like a comforting shadow in the backgrounds of Bring It On!, "Hit 'n' Run" sounds like nothing less than an outtake from No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom and "Caught in a Blonde" ...

This Sinking Ship CD music
$13.25 Contrary to what the more Manhattan-centric individuals in the jazz world would have us believe, European jazz vocalists don't have to record in the Big Apple to be legitimate -- a singer can find plenty of first-class improvisers to work with in places like Stockholm, Paris, Oslo, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam. So even if Fay Claassen had never crossed the Atlantic Ocean and opted to work in Europe exclusively, the Dutch singer would have a lot to be proud of. That said, Claassen did herself a nice favor when she traveled to the New York City/Northern New Jersey area in the early 2000s and recorded her second album, Rhythms and Rhymes, which was released in Holland on the Jazz 'N Pulz label. The American musicians who join Claassen on this CD include, among others, Toots Thielemans, ...

This Sinking Ship songs
$15.05 The 25th Anniversary Deluxe 2CD reissue of GOD SAVE THE SMITHEREENS includes bonus tracks & Pat DiNizio's SONGS AND SOUNDS (1997).
After two decades, the Smithereens were no longer in step with the times and they no longer cared -- they do what they do because they love it, not because it's fashionable. They were at that point with 1994's A Date With the Smithereens, but that record was hurt by a weird undercurrent of bitterness and Pat DiNizio's songwriting slump. Wisely, the group decided to take a break after that album. The extended five-year hiatus recharged the group, if God Save is any indication. Not that the record is a masterpiece, but it is a good journeyman record that plays up their strengths quite nicely. There's a little bit of everything that the Smithereens do on the record -- jangly pop ("She's Got a Way"), doomy rock ("The Last Good Time"), melancholy ballads, crunching riffs, and even a re-working of "Gloomy Sunday," reminiscent of DiNizio's moody solo effort. The Kinks allusion in the title is appropriate, since the Smithereens are also pop traditionalists whose consistency is only appreciated by a selective, discerning audience. Unlike Ray Davies, no one in the band really seems to care about the hits drying up -- there's joy within their songcraft and their performances, they like the act of making music itself. Admittedly, God Save may not be as immediate or memorable as their best albums from the late '80s, but there are no weak moments on the record. Every song is well-crafted and delivered with conviction -- the very things that made the Smithereens a beloved cult band. God Save the Smithereens may not play to the wide audience that loved "A Girl Like You," but that cult will certainly be pleased by this strong comeback. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
