For starters, it is impossible to go wrong with the personnel on FULL HOUSE. With a rhythm section comprised of alumni from Miles Davis's first quintet (Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums) and the blazing tenor saxophone of Johnny Griffin complementing Wes Montgomery's bop leads on guitar, listeners will know they are in for a wild ride even before the album begins. Add to this an enthusiastic audience in a Berkeley jazz club in 1962 (where the performance was recorded), and one has a full house in more ways than one.
Post bop with a soulful, bluesy edge is the flavor of the day here, and the group works out accordingly on Dizzy Gillespie's "Blue 'N' Boogie" and on Montgomery's own compositions, the title track and "Cariba," both of which meld shuffle-boogaloo rhythms to bop pyrotechnics, casting the whole in a soul-jazz vibe. A beautiful, smoothed-out read of "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" is a showcase for Montgomery's cool, melting tone. Listeners will undoubtedly wish they were in the audience in Berkeley that night; but listening to FULL HOUSE is the next best thing. (The Extended Resolution reissue of the CD provides superior audiophile quality.)

...in my opinion at least. It just seems like his other live set that comes to mind, "live with the wynton kelly trio at the half note" has been marketed better.
The cuts on this CD are amazing. I like the way the solos are not excrutiatingly long, as none of the soloists seem to "ramble" on. Also, the fact that Johnny Griffin isn't featured on every track is an asset. This gives the listener a sense of suprise whenever JG is featured - this is a Jazz Guitar cd - and adds to the chemistry of an already stellar jazz trio.
Definetly worth buying. Great sound quality as well!

Forget the stylized in-session cover art closeup of the "jazz man at work:" eyes clenched shut, lips pursed around a mouthpiece, dim lighting. On the cover of his Blue Note debut Gordon appears perched in a Central Park carriage in a sharp-looking trench coat, one hand on his horn case, the other waving a cigarette, a big grin on his face. Doin' allright, indeed. And compared to some of his labelmates, Gordon was perhaps something of an already-arrived success, having been on the scene for over twenty years by the time of this 1961 recording.
The confidence one would expect therefore, and the sunny disposition implied by the cover, are equally borne out by the music within. Gordon could write, as evidenced by his two fine originals here, "For Regulars Only" and "Society Red," but he enjoyed working with standards as well and made them swing hard. He doubletimes ...

The group shows a wide-ranging love of the roots/rock canon across the decades, playing well-known classics and hidden gems from the era of Elvis and Buddy Holly to anthems by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Steve Earle, and Bruce Springsteen, to name but a few. The band’s original members, guitarists Dave Meinzer and Adam Gearing, bassist Tom Fischer, and drummer Jim Celeste – all mainstays of the Buffalo music scene, formed the Outlyers in 1998. They began slowly, with limited appearances at events such as a Gram Parsons Birthday Party at Buffalo’s Mohawk Place. Encouraged by audiences’ enthusiastic response, the Outlyers began playing venues from the Americanarama Festival in Buffalo to the Orange Bear in New York City’s lower Manhattan. They have played a monthly Friday Happy Hour show at Nietzsche’s in downtown Buffalo for almost four years. Keyboardist Cathy Carfagna started out as a guest performer with the group but became a full member a year or so after band’s formation. The Outlyers released their first album – the 12-song American Songbook – in May 2002. Now, the Outlyers’ second CD of original songs, Hits & Myths, offers loud abrasive rock, quiet folk, and covers a lot of territory in between. Twangy Fenders, warm Gibsons, vintage keyboard sounds, and acoustic guitars form the core of the band’s sound, while pedal steel guitar, Memphis-style horns, accordion, castanets, and sleigh bells sweeten the recordings. With three vocalist/songwriters contributing to the proceedings, Hits & Myths demonstrates contrasting textures and moods - but lyrics that frequently express alienation and disaffection with the current American political climate provide a common thread. Due to out-of-town job responsibilities, Jim Celeste regretfully stepped out of the drummer’s chair in late 2004, and Bob Chapman began playing drums with the Outlyers until he was beckoned to a job in Denver.
