| | Jazz After Midnight CD (5 Customer Reviews)
Jazz After Midnight contains ten romantic standards performed by artists on the Highnote label. While short on improvising or energetic interludes, this is a decent budget-line set that features Frank Morgan, David "Fathead" Newman, and Larry Coryell with less than obvious inclusions by Mike LeDonne, Don Sickler and Louis Hayes & the Cannonball Legacy Band. Recommended for those who appreciate jazz as romantic background music. ~ Al Campbell **Super Audio CD (SACD) Hybrid** This CD will play in standard CD players. A Super Audio CD player is required to take advantage of the SACD sound technology. Jazz After Midnight Music Jazz After Midnight Songs Jazz After Midnight Music Jazz After Midnight Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) Great late night music, but not DSD quality sound This is the perfect collection for hanging out with folks late late into the night. That being said... I got this for the SACD layer. But the sound quality on the SACD layer sounds like good old 44KHz 16 bit CD sound, i.e. boring; instruments that all sound like they are made of linoleum instead of brass, reed, metal and wood; you can't hear the walls of the studio; you never suspect the music might actually be live in your house. Good DSD sound makes me LOVE all the instruments --- that fat nasty trumpet, the slithering cymbal, the breath of the violin. But this disk --- me and this disk can never be more than just friends. And of course there is no way to know the train of resolution during the recording and editing. Congress ought to enact labeling requirements on the resolution of digital sources so the consumer knows what "proof" they're buying --- this disk is CD light beer sold as SACD bourbon. But hey, the SACD format is struggling hard enough in the market as it is. I realize now that in the analog era, good sound came along for free, but now, great sound is a digital add-on that most of the MP3 generation have never experienced and don't care about. I have not stop playing it. Thanks to High Note Records for compiling this SACD. Its selections are deversifyied, and just the standard "smooth jazz" that is on the market today. Submitted by eric_v2_2 (Houston, Tx) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Audiophile Quality SACD Hybrid The fidelity of the SACD and redbook layers are as good as anything on the market. Anyone who thinks otherwise probably need a systems upgrade. Hybrids are always a better choice as greater care is taken in their recording. If you like great sounding relaxed jazz this is just the ticket. It's one of my favorites and a steal at this price.
