Jorn Lande, a journeyman power metal singer from Norway, has recorded and toured with a wide variety of metal bands since his professional debut in the early '90s, along with his own on-again, off-again solo career. The Gathering, as its title implies, is a collection of remixes and re-recordings of solo material from the early years of Jorn's career. Given that Lande is working in a deliberately restrictive musical style -- pre-thrash classic-style metal -- that by design has not really changed much in sound or musical approach since before Metallica's Kill 'Em All came out, the age of this material is basically immaterial. Even the songs that are merely remixed from the original masters sound completely of a piece with Jorn's unapologetically retro vocal style, making The Gathering a perfect way for relative newcomers drawn in by Jorn's many stints as the lead singer of various metal bands to get caught up with the man's own metal muse. ~ Stewart Mason
One of two 2007 releases from the band formed by Norwegian AOR singer/songwriter Jorn Lande who has worked with Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Lynn Turner, Don Airey, Uli Jon Roth and previously fronted the Metal band Masterplan. The Gathering is a collection of pre-Masterplan songs (some re-recorded) that shows the depth of his early songwriting skills. Frontiers. Jorn Gathering Songs | 1. | Something Real |

Gathering album
$10.35 An all-star aggregation similar in conception to Ayreon, Avantasia's The Metal Opera naturally spotlights its creator, Tobias Sammet, who wrote all the music and the involved fantasy storyline over the course of a year as a side project from his main gig with the German power metal band Edguy. Though Sammet's vocals play a major role, he recruited some of his power metal contemporaries to sing the parts of different characters in the story, tailoring his casting choices -- elves, dwarves, Druids, and other D&D-type mainstays -- to their vocal ranges. (Oddly, given the themes, there's a bit of a Christian undertone to the lyrics.) It's tempting to say that for a grandiose conceptual project like this, the scope of the ambition is more important (and entertaining) than the actual results. Everything here is painted in such sweeping colors -- the epic song lengths, the heroic themes of the narrative, the bombastic arrangements, even the brief Latin-titled interludes -- that it can be difficult to see how the album could ever achieve the heights it aims for, even if it turns out well. But no matter how over the top things get, it still takes ...
| | Avantasia Metal Opera PT. 2 CD (2002)
Gathering CD music
$10.45 Long-awaited second part of the chart breaker Avantasia by mastermind Tobia Sammet from Edguy and featuring members of Gamma Ray, Rhapsody, Virgin Steele, Within Temptation, Warrior, Helloween, Angra, Kiss & Stratovarious! This Century Media Records release includes 2 bonus tracks 'Chalice Of Agony' (edit version) & 'Avantasia' (single version) for a total of 12. 2002.
Eagerly anticipated by power metal audiences who embraced Tobias Sammet's first Avantasia project, the aptly titled The Metal Opera, Pt. 2 essentially offers more of the same, in sound, style, and personnel. Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween) gets credit for his appearance this time out, following his mystery cameo as "Ernie" on the first record, and a number of the featured vocalists from Pt. 1 reprise their characters on the second installment; new faces include ...

$13.15 Released in concert with Jorn's other early-2007 album, The Gathering, Unlocking the Past refines and extended the concept of that album, which found the Norwegian power metal singer reinterpreting material from his own early solo albums. Unlocking the Past, however, is an album of classic rock covers. As a result, this has the feeling of a heck of a ...

| | Jerry Garcia Grateful Dawg CD (2001) Original Soundtrack
Gathering music CDs
$14.49 GRATEFUL DAWG is a documentary film about the musical friendship between Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, directed by Gillian Grisman. It also features performances by Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys, Old & In the Way and Ewan MacColl.
Though nominally the soundtrack to filmmaker Gillian Grisman's documentary about the close musical friendship between her father, legendary mandolinist David Grisman, and Jerry Garcia, late founder of the Grateful Dead, Grateful Dawg also functions as the sixth release by the duo and their first live recording. The live recordings of a Garcia and Grisman show from the early '90s (backed ably by members of the David Grisman Quintet) are intercut with several archival cuts by the likes of Bill Monroe, Ewan MacColl, and Old and in the Way, the bluegrass supergroup both Garcia and Grisman picked in during the early '70s. There is a nice narrative flow to the arrangement of the material which provides a depth to the wonderfully warm musical rapport shared by the duo. The background material focuses on the band's folk and bluegrass roots but, unfortunately, leaves the group's undeniably huge jazz influences aside. There is hardly room on the CD, but a cut by Django Reinhardt would have done well to accentuate that element of the pair's music. Though the disc is poorly annotated (a rarity in the Grisman catalog), it is little matter. The live cuts are impeccably mixed and a joy to listen to, particularly quiet numbers like the jazzy "Dawg's Waltz" and the sprawling 16-minute reading of "Arabia." Perhaps even more impressively, Garcia is at relatively full control his spectacularly expressive voice for what might be the last point in his career. The David Grisman Quintet, including ultra-subtle percussionist Joe Craven, provides an accompaniment far more sensitive and sympathetic ...
