Personnel: Steve Nathan (piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Michael Rhodes (bass instrument); Jerry Flowers (background vocals); John Willis (acoustic guitar); Kenny Greenberg, Brent Rowan (electric guitar); Dan Dugmore (steel guitar); Chad Cromwell (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); Wes Hightower, Perry Coleman (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Greg Droman. Recording information: Blackbird, Nashville, TN; East Iris, Nashville, TN; House Of Gain, Nashville, TN; Sound Kitchen, Nashville, TN. As a Californian, country traditionalist Gary Allan came by his Merle Haggard/Buck Owens-inspired sound naturally. From his 1996 debut on, he never dropped his twang or his honky-tonk groove, regardless of changing fashions. GREATEST HITS chronicles a decade of Allan's honest, sometimes emotionally intense country music. Over the years, he ranged from purposefully retro tracks somewhat akin to Dwight Yoakam's early material, to rougher-edged tunes whose gravitas was hard-earned in the wake of personal trauma. For the faithful, a couple of previously unreleased songs are included here, which hint at an expanded sonic palette for this reliably roots-conscious country star. Gary Allan's Greatest Hits, released in 2007 by MCA Nashville, compiles 15 key songs from his back catalog. Most of the inclusions were bona fide hits, including a pair of number ones: "Tough Little Boys" and "Nothing on But the Radio." There are also two new songs, one of which, "A Feelin' Like That," was a number 17 chart hit at the time of the album's release. Greatest Hits thankfully includes only a song apiece from Allan's first two albums, Used Heart for Sale (1996) and It Would Be You (1998), which were released by Decca and are minor works in his discography. This leaves plenty of space on Greatest Hits for Allan's subsequent, notably better work for MCA: Smoke Rings in the Dark (1999), Alright Guy (2001), See If I Care (2003), and Tough All Over (2005). Each of these latter albums includes songs not included here that are worth hearing. Fans consequently will want to check out those MCA albums in full. As for casual fans who just want the radio hits without any filler, Greatest Hits has almost all of them and is an economical choice. Plus, it has "A Feelin' Like That," which can't be found elsewhere. Taken as a whole, Greatest Hits showcases Allan's accomplishments to date, which, with the exception of his early albums for Decca, are fairly impressive. He's carved out a respectable place for himself among contemporary country males. ~ Jason Birchmeier Gary Allan Greatest Hits Songs Greatest Hits Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Brilliant collection! Very Talented Country Artist Gary Allan is not an artist you throw up there with the big names, Chesney, McGraw, Keith...but he's certainly every bit as talented, if not moreso if you like his style of country music. Suprised he hasn't received more accolades and awards because he's recorded some wonderful songs! You won't be disappointed with this collection, I guarantee you! Awesome Artist! Great Album... you won't be dissapointed. Gary Allan needs more credit than he has been given, and his latest "Watching Airplanes" is a great song that will take him even farther. Submitted by wacko999 (Snellville, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Gary "California Coast" Bonds Here is a prime example of what all country artists should do after at least 4-6 albums of original material, put out all the songs that were both a hit on the radio and with fans. There were a few B-list songs that didn't make the album, but we will look forward to Volume II. Though for now Mr. Gary Allan-Bonds, you have hit this one out of the park. | | Very Best Of Dwight Yoakam CD (2004)
Greatest Hits
$15.09 Personnel: Dwight Yoakam (vocals, guitar); Buck Owens (vocals). Liner Note Author: Holly George-Warren. Photographer: Davis Factor. Take a look at the title of Rhino's 2004 Dwight Yoakam collection -- this is The Very Best of Dwight Yoakam, not The Greatest Hits, which means that there are several hit singles missing. Actually, there are a grand total of 20 charting singles missing, the exact length of The Very Best Of and certainly more than can be winnowed down to a single-disc overview of his biggest hits. Inevitably, cuts had to be made, and the decision was made to span his entire career, coming at the expense at some of his earlier, bigger hits, which means this may not appeal as much to listeners who are familiar with Dwight from the time he had a steady string of singles in the country Top ...

| | Cajun Capers: Cajun Music 1928-1954 CDs (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Greatest Hits
$21.99 Definitive guide to the music from the deep south of the USA which became known as Cajun. Filled with lively dance music, this set takes you back to the roots of Cajun music, a time when dances resounded to the sound of the accordion while the smell of spicy gumbo filled the air. Extensively annotated by one of the foremost experts on this fascinating music and culture. 4 CDs of digitally remastered sound. Proper. 2005.
Audio Remasterer: Peter Rynston. This impressive four-disc set covers the early history of Cajun music with a careful eye for detail, beginning with Joseph Falcon's "Lafayette," released in 1928 and generally considered the first commercial Cajun record. An utterly unique mixture of French folk song mixed with American Indian, German, Spanish, Italian, Irish, and African (by way of the West Indies) elements, Cajun music generally relied on a twin-fiddle attack (one lead, one rhythm), and once the German diatonic accordion was introduced, heavy emphasis on the accordion. Song lyrics were usually in French Cajun patois, making Cajun a distinct musical genre in southwest Louisiana that, for all its strange, eerie overtones to the modern ear, was first and foremost a dance music. Cajun Capers traces the early history of the form, and includes such highlights as Amédé Breaux's 1929 recording of what amounts to the Cajun National Anthem, "Jolie Blonde," which began life as "Ma Blonde Est Partie" and shed words and letters until it became known simply as "Jolie Blon" by the time of Harry Choates' definitive version in 1946. Amédé Ardoin, the black accordion player who injected Creole blues into the Cajun equation, thus setting the stage for zydeco, is represented here with 1929's "Two Step de Eunice," and his influence stretches forward ...
