(3 Customer Reviews)
Although their debut, Costello Music, was already out in the U.K. by the time The Flathead EP was issued, American listeners were finally offered a taste of what the Fratellis were doing with the four songs found here. Costello Music would come out in the U.S. a few months later, but the EP contains two of the singles from the album, "Henrietta" and the iPod-friendly "Flathead," as well as two other songs, "Stacie Anne" and "Cigarello," both of which also do a good job at showing off the band's bright, dancey Scottish garage rock, and set the stage for the upcoming full-length. ~ Marisa Brown

Flathead EP album
$10.29 John Paizs, director of the beloved cult film THE BIG CRIMEWAVE (aka CRIME WAVE), returned from a 15 year hiatus from feature filmmaking to direct this spoof of 1950s sci-fi. Taking stock characters from 1950s B sci-fi films and mixing them with his own peculiar dry wit and surrealist stylings, Paizs has turned in a spoof that is every bit the equal to his earlier film. The film stars Campbell Scott as Dr. Karel Lamonte, an urbane pipe-smoking scientist vacationing in ...
| | Making Spirits Bright: A Smooth Jazz Christmas CD (2001)
Flathead EP CD music
$10.49 A host of contemporary jazz stars fills this excellent compilation of traditional holiday music with smooth jazz inflections; jazzy vocals; and dashes of funk, R&B, and world music. Making Spirits Bright features such stellar jazz artists as Lee Ritenour opening with a beautiful smooth jazz version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," Diana Krall singing a swinging version of "Jingle Bells," and Gerald Albright out front on saxophone playing a funky but melodic version of "This Christmas." Marc Antoine's guitar is reflective and speaks softly on "What Child Is This?" Dave Grusin's lively "Suite de Nuestra Navidad" closes the program, adding a diverse mix to the music with its happy, lively, Latin flavors. His piano softly underscores a beautiful flute solo and lends the perfect spirit of the holidays -- peace, love, and goodwill. Making Spirits Bright is highly listenable and even more enjoyable because of its up-to-date 21st century versions of some of the world's favorite holiday music. ~ Paula Edelstein

| | Autumn Defense CD (2007)
Flathead EP songs
$12.15 It's easy to tag the Autumn Defense as a band striving to re-create the sun-splashed sound of the classic California folk-rock and chamber pop albums of the '60s and early '70s, but while their musical influences are clear, the truth is that Patrick Sansone and John Stirratt have delivered an album every bit as satisfying and beautiful as the artists they've followed with their self-titled third release. The Autumn Defense is a rich and mature collection of songs that sparkle with melodic beauty without ignoring the more difficult emotions that are often part and parcel of commitment; thankfully devoid of self-pity or a deluded joy, these songs speak of passion and experience in equal portions, and the superb arrangements and crisp, nearly flawless playing bring forward the impassioned material with inspired accuracy. As songwriters, Sansone and Stirratt deliver their strongest work to date on The Autumn Defense, and Sansone's production is lush without sounding excessive, as a superb ensemble of musicians (among them Nels Cline, Brad Jones, and Jim Hoke) weave superb textures around the melodies. The result is an album that wouldn't have sounded out of place coming from Elektra Records in 1970, but The Autumn Defense isn't an act of nostalgia for an era these musicians are too young to have been part of; instead, Sansone, Stirratt, and their collaborators have embraced the sound of a previous era and used it as a creative stepping stone into the present, and ...

| | Depeche Mode Question Of Time (1990)
Flathead EP CD music
$7.49 Featuring in a just-tweaked-enough single remix that keeps the song's driving brutality while making it a touch more smooth for airplay, via less echo and more prominence on Gahan's vocals, "A Question of Time" is another Depeche classic. With lyrics obliquely addressing societal and sexual role playing -- and being forced into them against one's will -- the combination of Gore's ear for a song, Wilder's arrangements, and Gahan's singing hits the perfect note here. Admittedly, Gahan sometimes lets his vocals fade back too much, but otherwise it's a thorough winner, with a big, smacking beat, a thick, snarling synth hook, and more besides. The extended mix has some semi-industrial fun with the opening and closing parts; more interesting is an odd two-part "new town/live" remix. The opening section is a reasonable enough mix of the track with some extra tweaks, which then bleeds over into a full live ...
