It's actually a combination of Infernal Affairs 1,2,and 3. Although it is somewhat unique and based on American culture, Scorsese's version lacks the brilliance and style in comparision to the original Hong Kong film. Sometimes there is alot of jibber and jabber in the movie that could had been removed. The music was also much better into the Hong Kong one. If you haven't seen IA, this movie may be for you but if you did, then you still might want to watch this. The Departed is a Mediocre remake at best.

What's the big deal for this film. I didn't find it great and this movie is no where near deserving of an oscar. Scorsese won a pity award and nothing more. Don't believe the hype.

Movie is full of plot-holes and lacks heart. 2007 should feature better movies. This is one forgotten departure.

This movie is amazing, Scorsese is an absolute genious. Everyone is perfectly cast, the weakest link being Matt Damon, still held up his end.

2 stars Just didn't like it.
I've seen the original Hong Kong one and it was good but not great. After I saw Scorsese's one it makes the Hk one look like a masterpiece. The movie starts off somewhat fresh on its own but halfway through it becomes a total IA ripoff! Sad to say most critics including the guy below who ripped off a critic review claiming it to be his own would naysay this movie is not a remake. It's a lie. The movie is entirely dependent of cliches taken from IA. The last and great Scorsese movie still belongs to Casino. If you ask me this movie is B-.

British director Christopher Nolan's (BATMAN BEGINS) eclectic resume gains another interesting entry with THE PRESTIGE. The basic plot, which concerns the rivalry between two magicians in early 20th-century London, closely resembles a fellow 2006 movie--Edward Norton's THE ILLUSIONIST--and the two films are sure to be closely compared. In Nolan's film, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale bring the characters of Robert Angier and Alfred Bordon to life. Robert and Alfred were young magician apprentices together, but became bitter rivals as their careers began to shape their adult lives and a terrible accident claimed the life of Robert's wife.
