Born in 1970, saxophonist Chris Bryars is of the generation in jazz seeking the future by retracing the past, though not in any derivative or nostalgic fashion. A member of New York City's "bebop underground," Bryars channels the influences of under-appreciated past masters of hard bop, such as Gigi Gryce, Lucky Thompson, and Tadd Dameron. The first quartet recording session helmed by Bryars himself, PHOTOS is a fine showcase for his flair with small-group arrangements as well as a fresh, distinctive approach to tenor, alto, and soprano saxophone jazz.
Composer: Chris Byars.
Personnel: Chris Byars (alto saxophone); Sacha Perry (piano); Ari Roland (bass instrument); Andy Watson (drums).Down Beat (p.58) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[H]is empathy for under-appreciated soloists like Lucky Thompson and Gigi Gryce reveals a harmonic sophistication and a unique sense of time." JazzTimes (p.122) - "[A] hard-swinging bop date, an irresistible disc featuring material honed over nine years at New York's Smalls nightclub." Photos In Black, White And Gray album
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from ...
| | Grant Stewart In The Still Of The Night CD (2007)
Photos In Black, White And Gray CD music
$13.75 This is hardly tenor saxophonist Grant Stewart's first recording as a leader, but his earlier CDs were for various European labels. In the Still of the Night is the release that set his career afire, as he joins forces with three of New York's in-demand musicians in his rhythm section: the hard-driving pianist Tardo Hammer, everyone's first call bassist Peter Washington and the talented drummer Joe Farnsworth. Right of the box, the big-toned Stewart makes his presence known with an up-tempo rendition of "In the Still of the Night" ...

$14.29 Ever since he first began to be noticed in 1992, Eric Alexander has developed into one of the giants of the tenor sax. He is not an avant-garde trailblazer; nor are there scores of saxophonists who sound like his clones. But Alexander has developed his own sound within the areas of hard bop to post-bop; he gives ...

Who on earth could have imagined that without founding father and vocalist Glenn Danzig, the Misfits could come back almost 20 years after their breakup with not one, but two killer albums? As difficult as it is to believe, FAMOUS MONSTERS proves that the Misfits reunion was no fluke. No musical ground is broken, but with ...
