Brand-New Gorgeous Best album
$13.79 It's perhaps ironic that you don't need to be able to understand the words to appreciate this celebration of the 700th anniversary of the birth of the great Iranian poet Rumi. But these performances by father and son, along with the other four members of the ensemble, transcend language to reach pure emotion. It can be as affecting as singer Shahram Nazeri's vocals on "Fanayam Man 1," where a spare backing merely emphasizes the voice, or the remarkable instrumental "Journey to Eternity" featuring Hafez Nazeri's work on the stringed setar (Persian ...
| | Buena Vista Social Club CD (1997)
Brand-New Gorgeous Best CD music
$15.05 BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
That Ry Cooder, you've got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. In the wake of his landmark recordings TALKING TIMBUKTU with Ali Farka Toure and A MEETING BY THE RIVER with V.M. Bhatt comes BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, essentially a supergroup of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of international agitator Cooder. Somehow, Cooder always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder's slide simultaneously finds a home and eggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real ...
| | Lee Ann Womack I Hope You Dance CD (2000)
Brand-New Gorgeous Best music CDs
$11.99 "I Hope You Dance" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. I HOPE YOU DANCE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "I Hope You Dance" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award in the categories of Song Of The Year and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
"I Hope You Dance" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Song.
While her colleagues either dip their toes in pop music or embrace it wholeheartedly, Lee Ann Womack keeps it country. Womack's third release, I HOPE YOU DANCE, finds her looking back to country's past, while keeping both feet firmly in the present.
Womack's nod to those who came before includes terrific cover versions of two modern classics: Rodney Crowell's "Ashes By Now" and Don Williams' "Lord I Hope This Day Is Good," as well as guest harmonies by New Traditionalist Ricky Skaggs (on "The Healing Kind"). More subtly, her respect is obvious in the Bakersfield twang of "I Feel Like I'm Forgetting Something," the Appalachian harmonies of "Does My Ring Burn Your Finger," and the album's rootsy instrumentation. But Womack places herself squarely in modern-day country with the lovely, poetic title track, a country take on Bob Dylan's "Forever Young," with guest vocals by Sons Of The Desert. Another standout is "Stronger Than I Am," a beautifully crafted song about a divorcee who realizes her daughter has survived the ordeal much better than she has. The tasteful production highlights Womack's delicate voice which, unlike those of her colleagues, ...

| | Gentlemen Losers Dustland CD (2009)
Brand-New Gorgeous Best songs
$13.89 The sophomore release by the Gentlemen Losers finds the brother team of Samu and Ville Kuukka again happily at work creating a contemplative series of instrumentals that readily mix and match a variety of guitar-based styles. There's as much a mid-'70s Pink Floyd zone on display -- as "Ballad of Sparrow Young" shows in a restrained way -- as there is the kind of gentle focused yearning one might expect from the Durutti Column. The latter is most readily invoked in "The Echoing Green," with what almost sounds like wordless vocals adding a romantic glaze to the performance, but perhaps the strongest theme throughout Dustland isn't musical per se but more generally sonic. The ...
