The Elders may be based in Kansas City, but you'd never know it to hear their music, which is full of references to Irish history and myth. The sextet has a rock-based sound played on amplified instruments, with Steve Phillips' electric guitar prominent in the mix. But the pennywhistles, mandolins, and accordions are never drowned out. The Elders are more traditional than, say, Black 47, as expatriate Irish bands go, but they play original songs, mixing in part of a traditional tune here and there. Lead singer Ian Byrne (the only actual native of Ireland in the band) uses his slightly husky, Irish-accented tenor to bring out the sentimental, descriptive lyrics, which are full of mountain and sea imagery, and soaked in whiskey and stories handed down through Irish history. Early on, he is content to tell of the sailor's life in songs like "Racing the Tide" and "The Story of a Fish," but he turns passionate in recounting Irish political history in "Ever Be a Nation," a tale of British oppression that concludes, "A hundred bad years later and the struggle still goes on/A hundred bloody Sundays and their funerals come and gone/No victors only victims and survivors left to mourn/Our children need to know this Island is their home." As this suggests, the group is humorless at its best and somewhat histrionic at its worst, but it's hard to believe its music could fail to stir a crowd of Irish-American descendants even in Kansas City, especially if the bar was open. ~ William Ruhlmann

Subtitled - Greatest Hits & Choice Collectables 1974-1997. Released in tandem with the single, Snake Eyes On The Paradise Dragon hits anthology, this 40 track double CD presents that 78 minute 'best of' collection, with a second, 19 track, 78 minute disc featuring a selection of B-sides, quality album songs, live tracks & alternate takes, an unreleased impromptu sound check performance, a song from the short-lived Dragon sans Marc, a film title song from a Marc solo album written by Cold Chisel's Don Walker, & an unheard Dragon studio recording from 1997. Most importantly, this edition, more than a year in the making, covers Dragon's first studio efforts, presenting tracks from albums which once had New Zealand's Hot Licks gushing, 'Dragon have made a swift & remarkable metamorphosis from a sporadic experimental band into a tighter, completely self-contained rock unit, capabilities still intact, artistry better than ever, influences & ideas in better perspective'. Tales From the Dark Side: Greatest Hits and Choice Collectables 1974-1997 is really the ultimate Dragon compilation. Combining the full greatest-hits disc Snake Eyes on the Paradise with a second disc of delectable grab-bag material, this album contains virtually everything you need to know about this mythic New Zealand band. Disc One presents all of the slick hits that made this troubled and talented outfit one of the finest to roam the Australian continent in the '70s and '80s (a full accounting of which is included in the review for Snake Eyes). The second disc takes the listener deep below the surface with 19 tracks of B-sides, album cuts, live tracks, and other odds and rarities. Go back to the band's trippy beginnings and hear the Pink Floyd-meets-Santana ...

$15.59 This 17-track compilation neatly summarizes the poppy hard rock of 1980s supergroup Asia, a quartet of progressive rock warhorses simplifying and streamlining their sound on hits like "The Heat of the Moment" and "Only Time Will Tell."

| | Tsjuder Desert Northern Hell CD (2004)
Racing The Tide album
$13.45 With the doctrine "No synthesizers, no female vocals, no f**king compromises!" proudly scrawled upon its sleeve, Tsjuder's third album, 2004's Desert Northern Hell, irrevocably proclaims its allegiance to black metal's rude, crude, austere golden age from roughly ten-years earlier. Which is to say there's none of that new age, high-falutin, symphonic s**t cluttering the work of these Norwegian noise terrorists. No sir, just brutalizing sonic hatred reaching way back to legendary compatriots Darkthrone and Mayhem, and beyond to primordial giants like Bathory, Hellhammer and, of course, the big twisted daddies of them all: Venom. ...
