Soundtrack French; English Subtitles In the haunting drama "Muriel," French filmmaker Alan Resnais continues his exploration of and fascination with memory and the impact of past events on people's present lives.
Helene is a lonely widow who lives with her stepson, Bernard, in Boulogne. Into their lives walk Alphonse, a lover from her past, and Francoise, who he claims is his niece but is actually his mistress. While Helene and Alphonse are obsessed with their past relationship, Bernard is troubled by his memory of a girl whose brutal death he witnessed while he was fighting in the Algerian War.
As in his prior films, Resnais tells the story in a dream-like, stylized fashion. Director Alain Resnais collaborated with novelist Jean Cayrol in this introspective drama of four lives linked by haunting memories. A co-production of Argos Films, Alpha Productions, Eclair, Les Films de la Pleiade (Paris) and Dear Films (Rome).
Shot in Eastmancolor.
The film was shown at the Venice Film Festival in August of 1963, where Delphine Seyrig was named Best Actress. It was also shown at the New York Film Festival.

$16.25 François Truffaut's DAY FOR NIGHT is the French master's tender, humorous love letter to the cinema. Stepping in front of the camera, Truffaut plays Ferrand, a director who's embarking on his latest production, a melodrama entitled MEET PAMELA. As the cast and crew convene at the Victorine Studio in Nice, a family is formed, but unlike most families, this one is only temporary. There's the gorgeous American actress (Jacqueline Bisset), the love-struck young lead (Jean-Pierre Leaud), the aging alcoholic (Valentina Cortese), and the unheralded crew (grips, technicians, etc.). Along the way, those involved in the production start to feel as if the events in their real lives are coming straight out of the movies, filled with romance, tragedy, melodrama, and a dash of slapstick.
As with the best works of art, Truffaut's film doesn't exist merely to provide viewers with a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the tumultuous craft of filmmaking. While Truffaut doesn't ...

$28.65 Michaelangelo Antonioni's L'ECLISSE (ECLIPSE) is a visually stunning film with a strange, abstract plotline. Monica Vitti stars as Vittoria, a beautiful woman who, in the opening scene of the movie, dumps her boring boyfriend Riccardo (Francisco Rabal). Vittoria's mother (Lilla Brignone) passes her time at the stock exchange, watching the numbers rise and fall as if her whole life depends on the next high or low. In contrast, Vittoria wanders the streets of the city unhindered, dreaming, floating independently and waiting for whatever fate befalls her. She begins an affair with a powerful, handsome, emotionally vacant stockbroker, Piero (Alain Delon). Their relationship is fun, flirtatious, risky, and dangerous all at once--but mostly, it is an expression of true human affection, which the other characters in L'ECLISSE seem to lack. However, the plot of L'ECLISSE is hardly ...

$10.49 When Deepa Mehta first began filming WATER in 2000, angry fundamentalist mobs burned her sets and threatened her life. The Indian government claimed it could not protect her, and the project had to wait four years before finally filming in Sri Lanka. Her film has raised the ire of extremists because it challenges the Hindu customs that dictate that widows, considered half-dead after the loss of their husbands, must be closeted in holy ashrams--a practice that still exists today. Set in the 1930s, the film tells the story of eight-year old Chuyia, whose husband dies before she even meets him. Her parents shave her head and whisk her away to a house of widows where the women sleep on the ground and beg in the streets to earn their puny portion of rice. Chuyia, feisty and resilient, comes into this world like a ray of light, and soon the women are rethinking their mute acceptance of their fate. Her closest friend and ally is the lovely Kalyani, and soon a forbidden romance begins to develop between Kalyani and Narayana, a young Brahmin man who, following the teachings of Gandhi, has denounced injustice.

| | Devil And Daniel Johnston DVD (2006) Widescreen; Black & White; Collector's Edition; Subtitled
Muriel video
$13.55 Although his appeal barely stretches beyond a small band of obsessives in the tight-knit indie-rock community, the turbulent career of singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston has had more highs and lows than most globetrotting rock stars. This film by director Jeff Feuerzeig offers a retrospective look at Daniel's life, forming an affecting picture of a truly talented man. Eschewing the opportunity to bring in a host of celebrities to wax lyrical about Daniel--of which there would be many: Nirvana, Beck, Sonic Youth, SIMPSONS creator Matt Groening, and many others are all devoted followers of the singer--Feuerzeig instead speaks to those who know (or knew) him best. So Daniel's parents, a former girlfriend, a former manager, and others all step forward to fill in the gaps in what becomes a remarkable story.
Feuerzeig's film shows how Daniel's battles with manic depression have blighted his chances of fully enjoying the fame that he desperately craves. Daniel himself does not speak to camera; instead he is heard through the mountain of audio cassettes on which he has obsessively recorded the key elements of his life. It all adds up to riveting viewing, with tales of an ill-fated major label deal in the grunge era, stints in and out of mental institutions, and Daniel's first acid trip at a Butthole Surfers show. What becomes abundantly clear is the love and devotion Daniel inspires in his family, friends, and followers. Feuerzeig is careful not to condescend to his subject, and notes how Daniel has enjoyed a latter-day renaissance ...
