Despite the fact that English vocalist Corinne Bailey Rae has the name of a country artist, and got her start playing in a grunge-inspired hard rock band, her self-titled debut is heavily steeped in 1970s-style soul and singer-songwriter intimacy. Rae's girlish, sultry voice might remind some listeners of Macy Gray, while the subtle shadings and jazzy textures of her tunes may bring to mind Nora Jones and Alicia Keys. Yet Rae, who wrote or co-wrote each of the album's 11 tracks and provides much of the album's instrumentation as well, brings a distinctive stamp to the neo-soul formula. Her songwriting is strikingly personal and well-crafted, and her singing, which can be as cool as a Lester Young saxophone solo (the lilting "Like a Star") or as soulful and swinging as Sly Stone (the breakthrough single "Put Your Records On"), sets her apart from the pack. CORINNE BAILEY RAE is a solid and very promising debut. When songstress Corinne Bailey Rae released her sashaying single "Put Your Records On" in her native U.K. it was a feel-good adult alternative phenomenon -- a kind of Norah Jones, Joss Stone, David Gray, or Macy Gray phenomenon. One listen to her breakout soft soul anthem and it's easy to hear why, since Rae is a mix of all the above but not a contrived one concocted by some major label's scientist. Her self-titled debut sounds a wee rushed and sometimes meanders its way into background music territory, but this comfortable effort is pleasingly homegrown, warm, and poignant in parts, especially when Rae doesn't weaken her strong lyrics with space-filling "doo de do do do"s and "mmmmmmm"s. So if she doesn't make an Alicia Keys-size splash with her debut, she's still a breath of fresh air, and hardly a one-hit wonder. It's risky to open an album with a lazy ballad, but the great "Like a Star" paints Rae as Billie Holiday's pop-influenced granddaughter. Mellowing Style Council or Brand New Heavies fans should dig "Trouble Sleeping," while "Butterfly" beautifully captures the full range of emotions that come with leaving the nest. The well-written and direct "Butterfly" suggests Rae could release a more accomplished full-length someday, but attention to "feel" often seems like the driving force in this album's creation. Adjust your expectations accordingly and Rae's langRolling Stone (pp.98-99) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[Her] voice suggest a warmer, less weird Macy Gray, and she uses it without a hint of diva showiness on breezy, sometimes sleepy songs..." Entertainment Weekly (p.70) - "Rae's an attractive neo-soul songbird with a caressing voice that's got an adorable Macy Gray-esque croak." Q (p.124) - Ranked #12 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006" -- "[Her] eponymous debut album immediately stood out." | | Chaka Khan Funk This CD (2007)
Corinne Bailey Rae
$12.09 Personnel: Chaka Khan (vocals); Jesse Johnson, Natural , Ricky Rouse, Tony Maiden (guitar); Jimmy Jam (Clavinet); Bobby Ross Avila (keyboards, electric bass); James "Big Jim" Wright (keyboards); Aaron Spears (drum); Iz (percussion, drum programming); Luis Conte (percussion). Chaka Khan is no stranger to reinvention. Initially known as the singer for 1970s funkateers Rufus, she went on to become a solo star, and in the '80s she enjoyed a career resurgence via the hip-hop-inflected smash "I Feel For You." In the late '90s, there was yet another chapter to the Chaka story, with an album masterminded by Prince. FUNK THIS, her first album of original material since that Prince platter, actually follows an album of jazz standards, but as the title implies it brings Khan back home to R&B. The production feels up-to-date without resorting to contemporary tropes, and still bears touches of the '70s and '80s. Alongside percolating new tunes, she reinterprets Prince's "Sign ...
| | New Frontiers Mending CD (2008)
Corinne Bailey Rae
$10.69 The full-length debut from Dallas-based indie rock outfit the New Frontiers blends a slightly rootsy, alt-country feel (chimey major chords, close harmonies) with an emo-tinged, bedsitter aesthetic (most notably in the songs that feature main songwriter Nathan Pettijohn). The combination works well on this 11-song set, thanks in large part to the band's full, absorbing sound, fine songcraft, and honest but never mawkish lyrics. The mood is low-key and introspective for the most part, but it's just this intimate feeling that will draw listeners into MENDING. The debut full-length by the New Frontiers single-handedly does much to reclaim the better aspects of the term "emo" from the rafts of soundalike eyelinered mall punk bands who have watered down its usefulness as a genre description. ...
| | Harry Chapin Verities & Balderdash CD (1974)
Corinne Bailey Rae
$5.95 Live Recording
Personnel: Harry Chapin (vocals, guitar). Arranger: Paul Leka. Verities & Balderdash is a very strange and wonderful album. "Cat's in the Cradle" was the driving force behind the album's sales, but there's a lot more to appeal to listeners, along with enough personal, topical material to make it seem a bit didactic at the time, but Chapin was cultivating a politically committed audience. Verities & Balderdash walked several fine lines, between topical songwriting and an almost (but not quite) pretentious sense of its own importance, humor and seriousness, and balladry and punditry, all intermingled with catchy, highly commercial ballads such as "I Wanna Learn a Love Song" (which is about as pretty a song as he ever wrote). Chapin is in good voice and thrives in the more commercial sound of this album, which includes lots of electric guitars and overdubbed orchestra and choruses. He still loves to tell stories -- most are like little screenplays, with "Shooting Star" offering details and textures and a sense of drama akin to a finished film (in the manner of "Taxi"). The "haunt count" on this album is extremely high, boosted by gorgeous ballads like "She Sings Songs Without Words." "What Made America Famous" may be the one song that comes off as dated, a parable -- perhaps reflecting the near-meltdown of politics surrounding the Nixon resignation of 1974 -- about long-haired teens and crew-cutted firemen who discover a mutual dependence and respect for each other and reconciliation; it seems like ancient history and probably will be incomprehensible to anyone born after 1968. Chapin also lapses into excessive dramatics in the finale, which shamelessly ...

Photographer: Don McLean. Arrangers: Don McLean; Lee Hays. Don McLean's second album, American Pie, which was his first to gain recognition after the negligible initial sales of 1970's Tapestry, is necessarily dominated by its title track, a lengthy, allegorical history of rock & roll, because it became an unlikely hit, topping the singles chart and putting the LP at number one as well. "American Pie" has remained as much a cultural touchstone as a song, sung by everyone from Garth Brooks to Madonna, its title borrowed for a pair of smutty teen comedies, while the record itself has earned a registered three-million plays on U.S. radio stations. There may not be much more to note about it, then, except perhaps that even without a crib sheet to identify who's who, the song can still be enjoyed for its engaging melody and singable chorus, which may have more to do with its success than anything else. Of course, the album also included "Vincent," McLean's paean to Van Gogh, which has been played two-million ...
