You've got to love an album that kicks off with a dialogue snippet from the must-see documentary about late bear activist Timothy Treadwell, Grizzly Man. And that's exactly what Laethora do on their debut full-length, March of the Parasite. But instead of following with some soothing sounds akin to the great outdoors, Laethora pummel you with riffing, bashing, and growling straight out of the Entombed and Napalm Death extreme metal handbooks. Strap on your safety belts and put on your helmets, because this is one intense sonic onslaught from beginning to end, especially such sweetly titled numbers as "Clothing for the Dead," "Repulsive," and especially "The Scum of Us All." ~ Greg Prato

In 2005, Novembers Doom made a giant aesthetic leap forward with The Pale Haunt Departure. It put their death metal roots even closer to subtle, multi-dimensional textures in a collection of songs that were not only memorable, but took the band to new levels in orchestrating vocalist Paul Kuhr's somber, often emotionally desperate lyrics. While it's true that the faithful engage in solid debate about the band's high watermark -- Pale Haunt or 2002's To Welcome the Fade -- with 2007's The Novella Reservoir it seems that ND have now laid down an unrelated trilogy of near brilliance in terms of evocative, musically and lyrically sophisticated heavy metal that seamlessly blends death metal, progressive metal, and near gothic soundscapes. There isn't an American band in the genre that comes close to what they do in terms of marrying metal's myriad songwriting forms, sonic adventurousness, and lyrical sophistication. Co-produced with Chris Djuricic, mixed by Dan Swanö, and mastered by James Murphy, the production quotient on this set is grander in scope than any ND studio set to date. The Novella Reservoir is more aggressive than its most recent predecessor without losing any of its melodic invention or textural depth. "Rain" comes crackling out of the gate with a death metal charge to open the set. The layers of guitars of Vito Marchese and Larry Roberts playing harmonics over the riff dictate Kuhr going into his lower register to keep the galloping death metal hook within his grasp. The last time White Lion issued a new studio album, the musical world was a very different place. Hair metal was still en vogue, but its death knell was rapidly approaching (with the arrival of Nirvana). The group collapsed soon after the lukewarm reception bestowed upon the release of 1991's Mane Attraction, and remained in hibernation until the late '90s, until singer Mike Tramp began touring under a few different White Lion-related names (such as "Remembering White Lion" and "Tramp's White Lion") and issuing live albums. But 2008's Return of the Pride is the first post-1991 release to be credited solely to White Lion. Despite Tramp being the only member present from the group's late-'80s glory days, the group's heavy yet melodic sound remains very much intact. Instead of attempting to give White Lion an updated stylistic makeover, much of Return of the Pride sounds as if it could have been released in 1989 and not be out of place at all. New guitarist Jamie Law manages to fill Vito Bratta's shoes pretty well, which is no small task (as Bratta was considered one of the more talented "shredders" of the hair metal era). Close your eyes and be prepared to be taken back to the carefree days of hair spray, spandex, and cowboy boots, as evidenced by such unmistakably White Lion-sounding tracks as the surprisingly heavy album opener, "Sangre de Cristo," as well as "Live Your Life" and the obligatory power ballad, "Never Let You Go." ~ Greg Prato
