Throughout the first half of 2007, this explosive N.Y. based band's lead singer, guitarist and dominant songwriter John Cusimano became a tabloid staple for all the wrong reasons: as the husband of Food Network icon Rachael Ray, involved in a swirl of rumors about their marriage. In a perfect world, he and his three Cringe cohorts -- lead guitarist Robb Levin, bassist Matt Powers and drummer Shawn Pelton -- deserved mainstream exposure for being the current decade's answer to the Foo Fighters, not for the travails of their personal lives. Cusimano's infectious and insightful songwriting is the foundation for the band's dynamic mix of artful, harmonic power pop and raw aggressive punk garage band energy. While Tipping Point, their second disc, has the perfect mix of blistering energy and thoughtful contemplation for these troubled times -- a dichotomy perfectly captured on key tracks like the brooding anti-war anthem "Freedom Ban" and the wild, spirited punk party jam "Undone" -- the Cringe was also committed to the old-school truth of analog recording here. Having played with the likes of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, Pelton felt right at home, as he put it, "going back to '78." The idea wasn't simply to go retro for retro's sake, however -- it was to convey the raw fire of the band's live shows, which they do perfectly on crisp, blistering rockers like "Coming Home" and "Fade Out." The Cringe is equally compelling on moodier tunes like the painfully emotional "Patient Man" (which finds Cusimano in a wistful, Eddie Vedder-inspired mode) and the heartbreaking "Chosen One." They're also cool with tongue in cheek social commentary on another instant classic, the scorching and punkish "California," which includes some of Cusimano's vocals filtered through a megaphone as it tackles the dual reality of "farms and vineyards/with your whores and sinners." But even these New Yorkers realize that they "just can't escape you." Like all great rock bands, the Cringe were chroniclers of their times, mixing darkness in with the light, and inspiring us to feel energized during the wild trip through the jungle of emotions. ~ Jonathan Widran

Tipping Point album
$13.15 Allan Harris BioAmidst a serious shortage of great male jazz singers, Allan Harris is a blessing. With a rich velvety voice and gentle stage manner, Harris' voice and demeanor project "the warmth of Tony Bennett, the bite and rhythmic sense of Sinatra, and the sly elegance of Nat 'King' Cole (Leonard Pitts, Miami Herald). " Delivering a repertoire of familiar and beloved standards, Harris' romantically appealing voice reaches out with the heart-breaking depth that caresses a song, giving each it's fullest respect by combining the best of the past with his unique gifts to create something fresh and distinctive. Besides having total vocal control, Harris is also a superb musician with a natural ear, and the ability to accompany himself on the guitar while retaining his hallmark pinpoint vocal accuracy and incredibly clear diction without affectation. From gentle ballads, to swinging tunes, to Caribbean rhythms, slow sizzling down-home blues and scatting, Harris shows with conviction, that not only does he have something to bring to the world of jazz, but that he is one of the leading male singers of his generation.Born in Brooklyn, New York, Harris was surrounded by music. His mother was a classical pianist and his aunt was an opera singer who later turnedto the blues. Because Aunt Theodosia attracted the attentionof famed music producer Clarence Williams, he became a regular dinner guest and often brought along other performers such as Louis Armstrong. Once Armstrong even baby-sat and terrified young Allan with his "frog like voice."Allan Harris has thrilled audiences all over the world, from jazz clubs in Europe and Asia, to Music Festivals in Sweden, Turkey, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Holland, Italy, Finland, and live performances in some of Europe's most famous opera houses with the Metropole Orchestra, the Rias Big Band, the Thilo Wolfe Big Band, and others. He has recorded numerous CDs: Setting the Standard, It's a Wonderful World, Here Comes Allan Harris and the Metropole Orchestra, The Music of Duke Ellington, Laid Back and Love Came, the Songs of Strayhorn. Allan's recordings have featured such luminaries as Ray Brown, Benny ...

| | Moody Blues Lovely To See You: Live CDs (2005)
Tipping Point album
$13.89 This concert album contains several surprises, not the least of which is its existence -- it's the third issued by the Moody Blues since the late 1980s. But it's also unique, featuring the band by itself, unaccompanied; all of their concert recordings since the 1979 issue of Caught Live + 5 -- which contained a 1960s concert -- have offered the group backed up by orchestras of varying sizes, which made for impressive sonics but reduced the spontaneity and raw excitement that should be inherent in a rock concert. The group, now a core trio of guitarist/singer Justin Hayward, bassist/guitarist/singer John Lodge, and drummer/singer Graeme Edge, with second percussionist Gordon Marshall, keyboardist Paul Bliss, keyboard player/backing singer Bernie Barlow, and flautist Norda Mullen (replacing retired founding member Ray Thomas). It's nice to know that Hayward and Lodge ...
