Tenor saxman Johnny Griffin was often touted for his blisteringly fast technique, but he was also a versatile stylist, as this classic date, Griffin's Blue Note debut, demonstrates. Released in 1956, INTRODUCING has Griffin tackling ballads and soulful, mid-tempo numbers, in addition to athletic bop workouts. Griffin's playing is always pleasing, and with Max Roach on drums, Curly Russell on bass, and Wynton Kelly on piano it's hard to go wrong. A 2007 reissue of the album features bonus tracks and beautifully remastered sound.
This CD reissue does not have tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin's first recording as a leader (he made a few sides for OKeh in 1953 and a full album for Argo a few months earlier in 1956), but it gained Griffin a great deal of attention. Soon billed as "the world's fastest saxophonist," Griffin was also a superior ballad interpreter with a fairly distinctive tone of his own. With strong support given by pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Curly Russell, and drummer Max Roach, Griffin romps on three of his originals, barn-busting versions of "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Cherokee" (the latter two were not on the original vinyl LP but included as bonus tracks on the initial CD release of the album), and a couple of ballads. Superior music. [In 2007 Blue Note reissued Introducing Johnny Griffin in a remastered Rudy Van Gelder edition.] ~ Scott Yanow

Introducing Johnny Griffin CD music
$8.99 This is part of Blue Note's Collector's Choice series. These are limited-edition pressings of a few thousand copies.
This LP has material from 1961 that for no real reason went unreleased until 1985. One song, "Three Coins in a Fountain," is from the same session that resulted in tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's famous Workout session with guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The other five numbers -- three obscure Mobley originals, plus "I Should Care" and "Hello Young Lovers" -- are from the previously unheard December 5, 1961 session with the same personnel except for Green. Hank Mobley was in a prime period around this time, and all of his Blue Note recordings are well worth picking up. ~ Scott ...

| | Deodato Knights Of Fantasy/Night Cruiser CD (2005)
Introducing Johnny Griffin music CDs
$11.69 This Wounded Bird two-fer packages together two of Deodato's transitional albums from 1979 and 1980, when he was actively pursuing chart success and radio play in the United States. Knights of Fantasy, from 1979, contains trace elements of the Brazilian producer and composer's fusion persona while melding them with disco and lite funk -- as many other jazzmen were also doing at the time, from Lonnie Liston Smith to the Crusaders. The album is a thoroughly kitschy sci-fi affair with some very fine playing and horn and string arrangements, particularly on the bass- and ARP-driven "Space Dust/Sherlock," which goes on for nearly eight minutes. Here, funk grooves are allowed to find their way and wind out while a popping bassline holds down the fort even as Deodato goes ape on the synth for his wildly improvisational solo. "Shazam" is another case in point, though it contains some smoking Brazilian polyrhythms undercutting the basic disco funk groove and a slight riff cop from Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime." The weirdest thing here is one of Deodato's trademarks -- taking classical themes and weaving them together in some "futuristic" way. In this case it's Bach, as he combines the composer's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring with Andre Popp's "Love Is Blue" (a huge easy listening hit in the 1960s by Paul Mauriat & His Orchestra) and his own "Whistle Bump"! The bottom line is that while it's somewhat shocking, it doesn't really work at all -- there are too many variables and too many instruments layered in, and when the disco groove tropes are added on top it falls far short of the mark. The title track is a handclap-saturated lite dance tune with a killer guitar solo by John Tropea. Night Cruiser, ...
| | Turning Learning To Lose CD (2006)
Introducing Johnny Griffin songs
$15.05 A noticeable debut from the Tennessee modern rock quartet, Learning to Lose features songs built around the strength of the Turning's rhythm section. The nucleus of the band -- guitarist/songwriter Matt Warren, bassist Jeremy Little, and drummer Jeff Goff -- formed while playing worship music at local churches in Chattanooga. After recruiting Jacob McGinnis as vocalist, the band turned to rock music, spent several years on the road, and eventually relocated to Nashville. ...
| | Allan Vache: With Benny In Mind CD (2007)
Introducing Johnny Griffin album
$13.25 In a testimonial printed on the back of the CD case, Bill Hyland (executor of the Benny Goodman estate) observes that this album looks both "backward and forward in a stylistic sense." That's baloney. This album looks resolutely and unapologetically backward in a stylistic sense, straight back to the 1930s, when Benny Goodman was making his hugely influential small-ensemble recordings. And it does so beautifully, with a clarity and grace that sometimes seem to have gone entirely missing in jazz ...
