| | Horace Silver You Gotta Take A Little Love CD Horace Silver Discography of CDs
Jazz pianist Horace Silver led a superb quintet in the late 1960s that included Benny Maupin on flute and tenor sax, Randy Brecker on trumpet, John Williams on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums. That group's YOU GOTTA TAKE A LITTLE LOVE is packed with excellent playing and the leader's memorable compositions (Maupin's contribution, "Lovely's Daughter," is also strong). This is adventurous yet accessible hard bop in the late-'60s vein, and the carefully remastered 2007 reissue should enable contemporary audiences to appreciate it all the more.

| | Booker Ervin Tex Book Tenor CD (2005)
You Gotta Take A Little Love CD music
$10.25 Tex Book Tenor was recorded in 1968 as a follow-up to Booker Ervin's debut date for Blue Note, The In Between, which was released in January of the same year. (Ervin had made two records for Pacific Jazz, which is now owned, like Blue Note, by EMI.) The album remained unreleased until 1976, when it was issued with an also unreleased Horace Parlan date on a double LP called Back from the Gig. This is its first appearance on CD. The lineup is stellar and includes Billy Higgins, Woody Shaw, Kenny Barron, and bassist Jan Arnet from Czechoslovakia. Barron and Ervin had worked together before, and Arnet had worked with Ervin three years earlier as a touring partner in Germany. The music here includes ...

Although he is accompanied by an all-star group that includes trumpeter Blue Mitchell, altoist James Spaulding, baritonist Pepper Adams and pianist McCoy Tyner, Turrentine's sidemen could almost have been anonymous studio players for the tenor is the ...

You Gotta Take A Little Love songs
$8.29 This Christmas jazz CD contains 14 performances, a dozen of them not available on other sets. The two exceptions are Tony Bennett's 1987 "White Christmas" (which contains one of tenor-saxophonist Dexter Gordon's last recordings, a brief and weak statement) and Wynton Marsalis's "Winter Wonderland." Other musicians who are featured include Harry Connick, Jr., Branford Marsalis, Joey DeFrancesco, Nancy Wilson, Grover Washington, Jr., Kirk Whalum, Ellis Marsalis, Richard Tee, Marlon Jordan and Terence Blanchard. Nothing that unusual occurs but this CD serves as good background music for the holiday season. ~ Scott Yanow

You Gotta Take A Little Love music CDs
$15.95 A bold jazz innovator whose stylistic range is rivaled only by his mentor, Miles Davis, keyboardist/composer/bandleader Herbie Hancock receives Columbia/Legacy's ESSENTIAL treatment on this excellent 2006 two-disc set. Although whittling the finest moments of Hancock's strikingly eclectic, decades-spanning career down to a mere 20 tracks is an exercise in futility, the collection reveals admirable results within those constraints, offering up tunes from 1962 to 2000. Among the many brilliant moments on this comp are Hancock's swinging hard-bop classics "Watermelon Man" and "Cantaloupe Island" (both featuring ace trumpeter Freddie Hubbard), the fiercely funky "Chameleon," and the groundbreaking electro-pop hit "Rockit." Although ...
