The 1952 NBC series Victory at Sea was one of the earliest network documentary series to capture the public's imagination in a serious way, and one of the more enduring offshoots was the music by Richard Rodgers, which was recorded by RCA-Victor in what ultimately became a series of four LPs. Rodgers was chosen by series producer Henry Salamon based on his being the "leading American composer of his day," a somewhat exalted (though understandable) judgement for a man who was most closely associated with the Broadway stage and Hollywood. The albums were popular, probably due in part to the fact that the music was accessible and unchallenging, and that it insinuated itself for months into the household of seemingly every American family that had someone fighting in World War II -- and that a lot of veterans owned stereo systems in the late '50s, and these recordings took full advantage of stereo's two-channel sound separation. As to the music itself, one finds on listening to it 40+ years later that a little goes a long way. Rodgers devised a straightforward melodic score whose most inspired moments (such as the main title theme) seem to have been lifted from the early work of Ralph Vaughan Williams. An astonishing amount of what is on this CD (which runs 67 minutes) is banal, predictable musical accompaniment, broken up with a few surprises, such as "Dangers Down Deep," which opens with an understated reprise of the main title theme, and "Theme of the Fast Carriers," which ...

The album begins, appropriately, with his remarkable account of the Prelude from J. S. Bach's Cello Suite No. 1, continuing through to an eclectic assortment that includes Piazzolla tangos, a Gershwin Prelude, and an excerpt from Tan Dun's score for the film CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, as well as pieces by Fauré, Brahms, and Dvorák. The disc also features tracks from the "Appalachian" collaborations with Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor, and several bonuses in the form of previously unreleased material: Piazzolla's Tango Sensation: FEAR and new recordings of John Williams' "American Collection" Theme and the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" featuring Alison Krauss. CLASSIC YO-YO is an excellent introduction for the uninitiated, but also holds value for anyone already familiar with the work of this extraordinary artist.

MUSICAL BIOGRAPHY OF CAREN GOODIN EVARTS...Professional Pianist, Recording Artist, Teacher, ComposerEvery recording by this artist, demonstrates over 50 years of performing experience. Through the years, she has developed a delightful, unique, expressive style. Her interpretations show a heartfelt love for the Classical, Romantic, and Impressionistic Eras. "Quiet Classics II" presents a wide variety of beautiful piano literature; many are famous, some are lesser known... yet enchanting works! Caren Evarts received her early music training at the Jordan Conservatory in Indianapolis, Indiana, later attended Oberlin College & Conservatory, then earned a Bachelors Degree in Piano Performance from Indiana University in 1965... followed by a Masters Degree from Butler University in 1968. During these years, she presented numerous solo concerts, performing on radio and television. Through competition, she was selected to perform as soloist with several orchestras in the Mid-West, including the Indianapolis Symphony in 1959.Coming East in 1968.. she served on the piano faculty of Hartt College of the University of Hartford for eight years, while receiving special coaching from concert and recording artist Raymond Lewenthal of NYC.From 1976, she taught and prepared concerts, while on the Piano Faculty at Miss Porter’s School in Farmington Connecticut. In June of 2007, after serving on the faculty at MPS for thirty-one years, she and her husband retired to Tucson, Arizona. Caren now continues to share her music with joy in a new part ot the country. Caren has produced six other solo piano CDs since 1994: “Scandinavia”, “A Gentle Touch of Christmas”, "He Restoreth My Soul", “Quiet Classics: A Legacy of Love", and “Touched By Jesus”.
