After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. DAVID HUTCHINS is a versatile and talented musician who has honed his craft over four decades as an accomplished entertainer and singer/songwriter.At a young age, he was recording, performing and entertaining as bassist, then lead guitarist/vocalist for the band The Whiskey Sours throughout Ontario, Canada.In the heyday of the YORKVILLE ERA in Toronto, they performed regularly at such clubs as The El Patio, The Purple Onion, Jacques Place and Charlie Brown’s, sharing the stage with contemporaries such as David Clayton Thomas [Blood Sweat and Tears], The Paupers [Lighthouse], The Sparrow [Steppenwolf], The Stitch in Time, the McCoys, The Stampeders and Question Mark and the Mysterians to mention a few.David is a 4-year graduate of The Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, Canada and had taken time away from music through his middle years, owning a company specializing in the design and construction of bars and restaurants.In 1980 he once again began to perform, write and record his own music. Initial recordings began at Amber Studio on Queen Street in Toronto, Ontario with producer George Semkiew (RCA).In 1985 he designed, built and managed his own nightclub GLIDERS, in Hamilton, Ontario. The focus was on an extensive menu and in-house production for an array of top Canadian and U.S. recording acts.Gliders became the staging ground for some of the music industries best known performers, as well as for breaking acts who would go on to great success. This included such greats as Buddy Guy, John Hammond Jr., Muddy Water’s Legendary Blues Band, Dr. Hook, The Byrds, Tragically Hip, Allanah Myles, Downchild, Prairie Oyster, The Good Brothers, Powder Blues Band and so many more.
