| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Pullsanti
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of My Heart," the softly soulful "Perfectly Lonely." Here, Mayer is effortlessly seductive and somewhat irresistible, ...

| | Nirvana Live At Reading CD (2009)
Pullsanti
$11.16 Certain concerts create a legend as soon as the final note ceases to ring. Nirvana's headlining appearance at the 1992 Reading Festival is one of these shows, a concert that arrived at precisely the right moment and stands as testament to a band at the peak of its powers...and right before things started to turn sour within the Nirvana camp. Despite the happy news of the birth of Frances Bean Cobain a mere 12 days before this August 30 festival, rumors swirled around Nirvana right up until the band hit the stage. Kurt Cobain took full advantage of these scurrilous stories, making his entrance in a hospital gown and wheelchair pushed by journalist Everett True. Cobain feebly reached for the microphone to croak out the opening lines of "The Rose," only to collapse onto the stage, milking the drama for a moment before leading Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl through a ferocious "Breed." This impish sense of humor has been obscured over the years, lost under the weight of the band's tragic legacy, along with the fact that Nirvana could actually be fun as well as furious. Live at Reading brings ...

| | Hall Of Fame CD (2000)
Pullsanti
$12.95 If the goal is dim, murky, and sensuous, then Hall of Fame has found it. The trio's third, self-titled release (as distinct from their debut album, three years previous) shows that earlier comparisons to such New Zealand avatars as Flies Inside the Sun were not only accurate but well-deserved in terms of quality. Perhaps crucially, though, Hall of Fame doesn't mind adding more conventional prettiness to their compositions, and this brief but fascinating album is easily able to cross the gap between drone-laden shadow and reflective, sweet songs, often within the same tune. Those who get off on lo-fi as an end unto itself will find Hall of Fame exactly up their alley, but there's much more going on here than a sad wannabe poet in a bedroom. ...

| | Rogue Got Sumthin' For You CD (2009)
Pullsanti
$10.15 When you think of the south you may hear the sounds of crunk music or strictly dance music. When you think of female rappers you may think of an artist only rapping about money and sex. When you hear the female emcee “Rogue” you’ll never carry any of those stereotypes again. Rogue is a new breed of emcee that comes from the southeast region of the U.S. Born in the city of Atlanta and raised in Lithonia, Ga this Rogue Emcee got a taste of the city and the suburbs while also experiencing the hardships of growing up in a household with a mostly absent father and a family who she felt didn’t understand her. In the early years of Rogue’s life she was a quiet observer of people and the situations going on around her. She would write about anything in her note book from fights at home, friends dealing drugs, to the time she was in state custody and stayed at a children’s shelter. In 2004 Rogue lost her mother to breast cancer and this event caused her to grow up faster than she expected. This new growth has given her a mature and realistic outlook on life itself and reflects this in her music. This 22yr old emcee gradually developed and grew into the fiery tempered, against the grain, artist known as “Rogue.” Rogue has been turning her writings into songs since the age of 12. She also has experience in beat making and production and has been at this craft since she was 14 years old. In 2005 she linked up with fellow artist Lejit under Something Outta Nothing Productions (S.O.N) and continues to work with Stealth and Exzile who make up the rest of the beat and production squad. Rogue has released two projects, “Got Sumthin for You” her first album, and a sophomore mixtape entitled “The Rogue MC.” Through Rogue’s music and performances at Django’s, Club Flamingo, The CW's Vinyl Stage, and other Atlanta hot spots Rogue has earned respect from everyone who sees her raw talent first hand. Recently Rogue was part of the A3C Hip Hop festival in Atlanta as part of the Women in Hip Hop Panel and Exhibition amongst other prominent females in the hip hop industry. She continues to try and spread her music and message of being a strong woman to other areas such as Charleston, S.C where she performed at a stop the violence block party in 2006 and Athens, ...
