Purchase Neue Leben CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Neue Leben album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, and Cash keeps that fine emotional tone throughout this set. Songs like the folk classic "500 Miles" feel at once both lovingly rendered and reborn for a new century in Cash's hands. There's also her fine rendering of Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," a nice turn at Harlan Howard's "Heartaches by the Number" (which features Elvis Costello), a calm but still spooky duet with Jeff Tweedy on the faux-murder ballad "Long Black Veil," and a duet with Bruce Springsteen on Hal David and Paul Hampton's "Sea of Heartbreak." Cash sings with a calm, measured authority, and all these the songs fit together with the same sort of refreshing resignation and care.
Adapters: John Leventhal; Rosanne Cash.
Personnel: Jeff Tweedy, Rufus Wainwright
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Neue Leben CD music
$13.05 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Homme's predilection for precision does reign supreme -- when the group stretches out, even wallowing in the murk on "Interlude with Ludes," there's the sense that, like a great improv troupe, the trio freaked out then retained the best moments, trimming away the indulgence and experiments, leaving behind intrinsically, grippingly musical hard rock, where power is secondary to interplay. And while there are melodies and hooks that certainly dig into the skull, what impresses is chemistry, how the three play together, how they instigate each other, and how they spur each other on, to the point where their familiar tropes sound fresh -- as on "Scumbug Blues," where Jones' "Trampled Underfoot" clavinet intertwines with Grohl's avalanche and Homme's rigorous psychedelia - creating guitar rock that's at once classicist and adventurous and undeniably thrilling. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Avett Brothers I And Love And You CD (2009)
Neue Leben music CDs
$11.25 North Carolina sibling duo the Avett Brothers return in 2009, fresh off a few years of building a cult following for its melodic and rootsy alt-bluegrass sound, with the subdued I AND LOVE AND YOU. The opening single and title track basks in piano-pop splendor in an odd mix of Beach Boys, Byrds, and the Band.
The Avett Brothers continue charting the same musical course as EMOTIONALISM and MIGNONETTE on major-label debut I AND LOVE AND YOU, despite the presence of hands-on producer Rick Ruben. The country-folk duo continue to add elements of pop and hillbilly rock to a country/bluegrass foundation on the 2009 LP, a record with a newfound emphasis on piano and nuanced arrangements. Working with a larger budget allows the group to add small flourishes -- a cello line here, a keyboard crescendo there -- but the resulting music is rarely grand, focusing on textures rather than sheer volume. Scott and Seth Avett share vocals throughout the album, delivering their lyrics in a speak-sing cadence that sounds both tuneful and conversational. Given the opportunities presented here -- the ability to flank their melodies with string sections, organ swells, and Harmonium -- the two devote more focus to slower songs, eschewing the barn-burning bouncefests of their previous albums for material that better displays such sonic details. The result is an intimate, poignant album, laced with rich production that enhances, not clouds, the songwriting itself.
Liner Note Author: The Avett Brothers.
Personnel: Seth Avett (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, piano, Hammond b-3 organ, glockenspiel, drums, percussion, background vocals); Scott Avett (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo, piano, Hammond b-3 organ, drums, percussion, background vocals); Joe Kwon, Joe Kwon (cello); Mark Daumen (tuba); Benmont Tench (piano, harmonium); Bob Crawford (electric bass, percussion, background vocals); Simone Felice, Mike Marsh (drums); Justin Glanville, Lenny Castro
| | Rolling Stones Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!: In Concert CDs (1970) With Book; With DVD; Anniversary Edition; Limited Edition
Neue Leben songs
$50.09 Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 27-28, 1969.
Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective hats to Chuck Berry, the band also included covers of "Carol" and "Little Queenie" alongside more blues-influenced numbers such as "Stray Cat Blues" and "Love In Vain."
Having been a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, new guitarist Mick Taylor parlayed his experience into some impressive slide guitar work. The pièce-de-resistance of what is arguably the best live Rolling Stones recording is the eight-minute-plus reading of "Midnight Rambler." Between Mick Jagger's unearthly harmonica playing and the tight interplay between Taylor and Keith Richards, the sinister vibe emanating from this song was eerie, foreshadowing the tragedy that would occur at Altamont less than two weeks later. Observant fans will catch the cover's subtle visual reference to a certain lyric from Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" from BLONDE ON BLONDE.
Originally released in 1969 as a way to divert attention from the bootleg sensation Live'r Than You'll Ever Be, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out received a lavish reissue treatment 40 years later, expanded to a three-CD/one-DVD set complete with a thick accompanying booklet. Instead of adding that original boot as a bonus, this anniversary edition fills out the November 1969 Madison Square Garden concert that provided the basis for the original LP, adding an EP's worth of unreleased Stones tracks from the show plus the opening sets by B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner, along with a DVD of

| | Alice In Chains Black Gives Way To Blue CD (2009) Limited Edition; Digipak
$14.39 When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low. To the delight of all however, the album proved to be perhaps the Seattle combo's most energetic and consistent effort since its masterpiece DIRT. Perhaps the most surprising element of the new record was how much it sounded exactly like Alice in Chains. While new singer William DuVall was not an exact Staley soundalike, he managed to evoke both the unique timbre and sense of deep angst that were the late vocalist's trademarks. Throughout, the sound is heavier and sturdier than ever before, with songs like the first single "A Looking In View" and "Check My Brain" borrowing a bit from the nu-metal bands Alice in Chains inspired, and beating the upstarts at their own game.

| | Burt Bacharach I'll Never Fall In Love CD (1998) (Import) Australia
$10.99 The confusing feelings of love were always comfortable fodder for the Bacharach/ David songwriting team. "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" is certainly another excellent example of this. It's one of the fastest-tempo numbers of the period from the duo. A brisk, lilting melody wrapped around a lyric that, although has a sense of dread and disappointment, recalls the joy of love all at the same time. POL. 2005.
| | Geto Boys Grip It! On That Other Level CD (1990)
$13.89 Don't let the Run-D.M.C. look-alike album cover fool you. Willie D, Scarface, Bushwick Bill, and DJ Ready Red's breakthrough album, 1989's GRIP IT! ON THAT OTHER LEVEL, challenges Eazy-E and company for the title of most fearsome group rap performance ever put to wax. Before their minds were playin' tricks on them and before Bushwick Bill's infamous self-inflicted headshot, this ruthless Houston crew truly brought hardcore hip-hop to that other level of the title. On GRIP IT! listeners get their first glimpse of gangsta rap's Al Pacino fetish ("Scarface"); Willie D takes the lead on a Public Enemy-esque black-power anthem that sings the merits of explicit content ("No Sell Out"); and the crew reaches for the apex of lyrical misogyny on the now-legendary "Gangsta of Love".
All bold subject-matter aside, the production sound here is seriously funky. DJ Ready Red flips a gang of classic samples including the Steve Miller Band, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, the Ohio Players, the Soul Searchers, Lyn Collins, Kool and the Gang, Pink Floyd, Parliament, and even the theme from "The Odd Couple." GRIP IT! is STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON's Down South cousin--two equally compelling and uncompromising albums that heralded the arrival of the gangsta genre.

| | Crystal Gayle Super Hits CD (1998)
$7.29 Super Hits focuses exclusively on Crystal Gayle's recordings for Columbia Records (1979-1981). Included are ten of her biggest hits, like "Half the Way," "Too Many Lovers," "The Blue Side," and "It's Like We Never Said Goodbye." Though there would've been plenty of room for additional hits, this disc isn't bad value at a cheap price. It fills a key gap in her catalog, as most Gayle best-ofs chronicle either her years with United Artists (1974-1979) or her subsequent years with Elektra/Warner Brothers Records (1982-1988). Super Hits is one of the few CDs to round up her Columbia hits. ~ John Bush & Jason Birchmeier
| | Roni O The Street's Most Hated CD (2008)
$10.15 Ronio (Roni.O) was born in Harlem New York, April '88. He lived in Corona Queens where he was under the guidance of his adopting grandmother. In fall '92 was when he and his family migrated to Rochdale Village, located in Jamaica Queens. Here is where he was raised, not only by his grandparents, but also by his urban surroundings. He attended P.S. 30 where he began rapping, influenced by his older brother (Slugadon) and lyrical legends like: 2Pac and the Outlaws, Big L, B.I.G, Jay-Z, and Nas. After multiple amounts of rap battles, and a cappella performances, at the age of 12 years old Ronio had already figured out what he wanted to do, with a strong local buzz, that reign with him through his educational career. By 2001 Ronio was an independent artist with nothing more than an appetite for more. Using home based recording he was "laying tracks" and creating self-made instrumentals, using a computer software entitled "fruity loops". Due to his involvement in multiple activities, it was hard for him to focus 100% on his music, so slowly but surely he ended up drifting off into the temptations of the streets at a higher level. But before he took a break from the music he started a mixtape project entitled "Crush'n Tha Hataz". Which was a 12 part series of mixtapes for street distribution, and promotion. Eventually, the effort put in the project was non, because of lack of studio time, and professional songs, so the project was released in 2004, and sold an unexpected 8,000 copies. After the surprising turn out, Ronio was adrenaline driven for the part 2 release. So more equipment was purchased for more home based recording, that took place at his co-producer's Paul Blazes Rocchdale apartment {studio 7b}. Trials and tribulations of life caused lack of songs, but an abundance of original instrumentals. Winter '05 the mixtape "Krushin Tha Hataz vol. 2" was released and distributed a whopping 15,000 copies of the mixtape. The project, co-executive produced by (Slugadon Slugfest mgt. ), gained more of a buzz for the artist. His talent is said to be remarkably undefined and versatile. In an interview with Piff-bunny distribution's chairman, Steve Piff he says: "Ronio is truly hip-hops CPR. Not only is he lyrically talented, but he has personality, and his music is really music". Move records founder Mark Hatcher says: "hands down, he is the idol of the future, his music sounds out of this world, and highly advanced. " Ronio is now, preparing for his nation wide, promotional tour, before then releasing two new mixtapes and an album, entitled the "future is now". He works hard non-stop, writing songs, creating instrumentals, graphic designing, engineering, he does it all. He plans to launch his independent label, co-owned by Slugadon (onsite rebel/slugfest mgt. ). In a recent interview with Ronio he was asked; whats are your plans for the near future, "how do you expect to gain mainstream exposure", he replies: "how I been doin it, doin me true indeed. " "my own money, my own production, my own promotions, my own s***!. " if you want to get down , do that or get away, we need distribution we don't need trouble".

| | John Wagner What A Lot Of Fun CD (2009)
$11.49 ProducerJohn Wagner began experimenting with recording techniques by recording his dance band in high school. Upon graduating, he was introduced to Norman Petty of Buddy Holly fame, who ran a recording studio in John's hometown of Clovis, NM. While recording with Norman, John's recording/music ambitions were formed.During his college years at the University of New Mexico, he spent every spare moment learning and refining his skills while earning a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. The next decade of his life would be spent capturing on tape and records the musical inspirations of hundreds of talented artists. Discovering, producing and recording songs and artists became the focus of his career and through time he developed an extensive publishing catalog. Over the past 30 years, John's recording studio has built a reputation for quality. He has even designed and built high-tech recording equipment for use in his state-of-the-art recording facility. Having produced records for, and signed artists to, major companies all over the world, John's achievements include production of two Grammy-nominated albums: Merle Travis' Travis Pickin' and Joe Maphis' Flat Pickin' Spectacular. In addition to these accomplishments, he has created award-winning original music and jingle campaigns for top advertising agencies nationwide. Of his many musical achievements, John's favorite project is his New Mexico the Sound Of Enchantment CD's. As a lifelong New Mexican, it only seems natural that John would create a work of music that embodies the traditional, contemporary, romantic and exciting elements of the state he loves. His dream is to bring New Mexico the Sound Of Enchantment to the world.
