With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. On Vintage Slide Collections From Seattle, Vol. 1, Jason Trachtenburg assembled the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, a colorful group of musicians including his daughter Rachel Trachtenburg on drums and Presidents of the United States of America frontman Chris Ballew on bass. At the band's live shows, Trachtenburg's wife, Tina Trachtenburg, serves as slide projectionist, adding a dizzying visual element to the festivities. The music is unabashedly light and fun-loving, much like the off-kilter epics on Trachtenburg's 2000 Revolutions Per Minute disc. After an energetic beginning, the light piano at the beginning of "Mountain Trip to Japan, 1959" hints at a new subdued style. The song eventually reinvents itself into another of Trachtenburg's semi-vaudeville-style classics. He shares vocal duties with his daughter on the fourth track, "Eggs." "Wendy's Sambo's and Long John Silver's" is another in a long line of serious-sounding musical statements, with the singer's tongue firmly in cheek. He goes on to again attack the fast-food industry with "Let's Not Have the Same Weight in 1978 -- Let's Have More." The piano and handclaps ...

Ring Of Fire is a cd of dobro, slide guitar and acoustic guitar instrumentals. Song composition is the first concern. I wrote all the songs, except Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire and Bill Monroe's song, Gold Rush. The styles vary from bluegrass to rock. Musicians who helped me on this record include drummers Pasi Leppikangas (John Cowan & Michelle Wright), Brian Barnett (Don Williams), Bob Warren (The Lynns) and Pat McInerny (Nanci Griffith). Upright bass was played by David Spicher (Jerry Douglas Band & Pam Tillis). Electric bass: Ron DeLa Vega (Nanci Griffith), Dow Tomlin (Jessica Andrews Band) and Dave Francis (Pam Tillis & Maura O'Connell). Reese Wynans played B3 organ (Stevie Ray Vaughn) and Jon Glazer played keyboards (Wynonna Judd).Fiddle and mandolin were by Jason Roller (Joe Diffie & John Berry band). I played all acoustic and electric guitars, dobro and slide guitars. For anyone interested in some of the sounds on this record, here is a list of the equipment used: Dobro: ' 81 ShoBro. Electric guitars: James Tyler strat, '64 Fender Stratocaster and Jerry Jones baritone guitar. Slide guitars: Custom made Tele Slide Guitars by Lynn Ellsworth. One of these guitars has a Fishman Power Bridge and the other has a 2-Tek bridge. Acoustics: '90 Martin HD-28, '43 Martin ooo-18.
