The distraction of a Tim Finn solo project (1983's Escapade) may have robbed Split Enz of the creative momentum produced by Time & Tide; Tim obviously spent much of his energy on that project, leaving him with a minority of songwriting credits for the first time since taking leadership of the band...There's a strong batch of songs from Neil, which includes the achingly beautiful love song "Message to My Girl" and the contemplative "Our Day," which intimates the thoughts of the soon-to-be father...A misguided overreliance on drum machines and generally heavy-handed production ultimately date a solid album. The telling title track, as well as the album closer, "Bon Voyage," hinted at Tim Finn's imminent departure from the band. Initial pressings of the album in New Zealand included a bonus 12" of "Kia Kaha" and "Parasite" -- songs unavailable elsewhere until the release of the box sets. ~ Chris Woodstra

So, despite a strong batch of songs from Neil -- which includes the achingly beautiful love song "Message to My Girl" and the contemplative "Our Day," which intimates the thoughts of the soon-to-be father -- the album suffers from a general lack of focus. A misguided over-reliance on drum machines and generally heavy-handed production are the real downfall, though, ultimately dating a solid though unexceptional album. The telling title track, as well as the album closer, "Bon Voyage," hint at Tim's imminent departure from the band. | Conflicting Emotions Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) excellent split enz. This is my second favourite ENZ album. The songwriting reached a new level, and the already outre nature of ENZ arrangements, was paradoxically made even odder by being more constrained. Make no mistake, this album, now remastered, sounds as current today as it did on release. MESSAGE TO MY GIRL borrows nicely from 10cc's I'M NOT IN LOVE with delicious stacked vocals, and CACTUS BRAIN is as strange as you could want. Not a dud track on it. Buy if you have a taste for melodic art-rock. Submitted by David Martin (Mt. Martha, Australia.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
A Great Album Just Got Better Thanks to Eddie Rayner, 'Conflicting Emotions' sounds better on CD with this remaster than it's ever sounded before in previous CD releases. Bass sounds great now that it can finally be heard in the mix. If you're a fan of the band, get these 2007 remasters before they disappear. | | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Conflicting Emotions CD music
$12.85 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Many would argue having Dylan croon these carols is unexpected enough and, true, there are times his gravelly rumble is a bit pronounced, but nothing here feels forced, it all feels rather fun, provided you're on the same wavelength as latter-day ...

| | Junior Varsity KM Taking Care Of You CD (1999)
Conflicting Emotions songs
$13.85 McDowell's contribution to Darla's Bliss Out series is a worthy one -- Junior Varsity km's own brand of restrained and sweetly beautiful ambient techno spiked with polite beats won't appeal to bleeding-edge cognoscenti, but those wanting a peaceful, enjoyable listen will find Taking Care of You right up their alley. Starting with the skittering jungle-meets-synth wash fusion of "You're Fabulous!," which also turned up as the lead track for a separate EP, the hourlong album continues in that vein throughout, helping ensure that some sort of chilled spirit of 1994 is forever lingering out in California. Slowing down and stopping a song entirely for a brief harp snippet isn't a surprising thing to hear as a result, and neither is the occasional ...
