| | Tim Lyddon I've Traveled So Far CD (2001)
Pauseland songs
$12.65 California-born but now New York-based pianist Tim Lyddon takes us on a calm, but powerful, journey through the possibilities of one of the oldest configurations in jazz: the piano trio. With just two familiar works on the ten-piece musical agenda, Lyddon uses his original compositions as the major pilot for this excursion. But familiar standard "I Thought About You" gets intriguing improvisational treatment. This piece could very well have been subtitled, variations on a theme, as Lyddon embarks on a quest of extemporization with only occasional reference to the melody, probing in depth the potentialities of this piece with fascinating chordal restructuring. His own music provides the foundation for his strong inductive unfolding of the themes of his originals. Analytical, but at the same time establishing a feeling of serenity and calm owed not only to the pianist's unruffled technique, but also to the meditative playing of the other two members of the trio, Tom Hubbard on bass and Scott Latzky on drums. Even Latzky's lengthy drum solo on "Freedom Piece" is a masterful understatement of the art of drumming, hardly raising its percussive voice. Yet at the same time, the tempos are not slow and plodding, but at the minimum somewhat speedy. The facility to be fast and strong without being loud and obstreperous is a rare ability indeed found only among the better keyboard performers. "What Time Is It?" is as good an example as any of this ability, as well as highlighting Hubbard's bass. This is a session that is both stimulating and challenging without becoming annoyingly distracting and is recommended. ~ Dave Nathan

| | Fwap Perfect World CD (2006)
Pauseland album
$13.15 fwap is comprised of 3 musicians, all with deep and rich musical backgrounds.Andy West - BassWest says his musical career can be divided into four phases. First, there was the Dixie Dregs (later just the Dregs) era, which began when he met guitarist Steve Morse in high school in Augusta, Georgia. The two formed a band that played the usual Zeppelin and Cream covers and evolved gradually into the Dixie Dregs. The group released six albums and split up in 1983, when Andy entered his second phase. He spent a few years in Northern California giving bass lessons, doing occasional side projects, and attempting to form his own band. He was introduced to experimental guitarist Henry Kaiser and played in Kaiser's Crazy Backwards Alphabet, which recorded an album and toured California and Western Europe in 1986-'87. During this time he also performed on guitarist Vinnie Moore's Mind's Eye and recorded with Paul Barrere of Little Feat. Eventually, West met guitarist Joaquin Lievano; the two moved to Los Angeles and formed Zazen, an "eclectic new-age instrumental band." This was the third and longest period of Andy's career. Zazen released over a dozen albums on private labels and produced 4 commercial releases. In 1993, West took a hiatus from Zazen and entered his fourth, current phase. He moved to Chicago, where he formed his own trio "It was a mix of really interesting heavy, industrial, sampled, chops-oriented stuff," he says. Recent years work has been the recording of the Mistakes' eponymous CD, a reunion of the Dregs that resulted in 1999âs âCalifornia Screaminâ album, and the Magna carta album âAndy West with Rama - Rama 1â (featuring Rod Morgenstein, Mike Portnoy, Mike Keneally and others). He is fully occupied with the latest incarnation of Zazen and the formation of fwap with long time associate Joaquin Lievano. | | Clotilde Rullaud Live Au 7 Lazards CD (2007)
Pauseland CD music
$11.39 The project :âI want to be a singer or a psychoanalyst when I grow upâ, she wrote in her diary as a child. As I listened to her Live au 7 LĂ©zards, recorded on the 11th of September 2006, I said to myself that in the end Clotilde Rullaud has become both. The nine tracks, selected from the worlds of jazz and pop (from Cole Porter to Prince and from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder), and enveloped by Hugo Lippiâs enchanting guitar, are a hymn to happiness and to life; a private journey where beauty and melancholy rub shoulders without seeking to rival each other.âHugo and I have shared a great complicity when we play togetherâ, Clotilde explains. âI love developing my sound through playing with others, creating minimal arrangements that are nonetheless vivid, incredibly delicate and of the moment. It is this instantaneity that I adore.âLive au 7 LĂ©zards was born from this understanding, from this âfree imprecisionâ. Seemingly classical in appearance, the music soon glides away on the wings of liberty that only jazz can offer, such as the surprising cover of Princeâs famous song Kiss, which is itself preceded by more than 40 minutes of pure enchantment in the company of the greatest or the most unexpected (Dorough, Rodgers, Lorentz, Jobim, Porter, Ellington, Irving, Wonder, Lennon &Mc Cartney). Lippiâs guitar dances with Clotildeâs voice, which itself caresses and surprises the hypnotised audience. âI wanted to make a lively and intimate record, which was evocative and sincereâ, admits Clotilde, who loves the âblue noteâ, the devilâs note that hovers on the border between suffering and joy. âI adore Gabriel FaurĂ© and Nat King Cole, Victor Hugo and Dostoyevsky, Bill Evans and Ella Fitzgerald. I am a pure romantic!âAs soon as one has reached the end of this interior journey, one has but one desire: to start all over again. But here lies the miracle of jazz, for the second journey will never be quite the same as the first. âTo sing is to contribute to the worldâs happinessâ, murmurs Clotilde in her dulcet tones. Her childâs diary was quite prophetic â music is truly a therapy.By Thierry KellerThe biographie :Clotilde Rullaud - singer, lyricist, composer and ...
