Posted byDavidwww.soundslike.beOp ‘Black Crows’ Country’ is geen plaats voor lichtzinnigheid. Deze tweede van Hyacinth House snijdt niet alleen dwars door merg en been, maar ook door je ziel. In hun thuisland Zweden kan het behoorlijk eenzaam zijn. Voeg daarbij nog het chronisch gebrek aan zonlicht en je begrijpt waar de donkere, onheilspellende sfeer vandaan komt. Hyacinth House bewijst dat wat snaarinstrumenten en een koud countrywalsje, het hart van een bedeesde nog steeds op hol kan doen slaan. Er is geen ontwijken aan. Wie dacht aan een avondje cowboys bij het kampvuur is er aan voor de moeite. Deze muziek neemt je mee voor een dolle rit op de highway to hell. Gejaagd door uit de bocht scheurende elektrische gitaren en opgejaagd door alt.country-instrumentaria zoals banjo, harmonica, dobro, mandoline en melodica raak je al snel op desolate offroadwegen. De stuwende bas, hammond en cello verraden een zware diesel die, alsof de duivel hem op de hielen zit, zelfs uit versnelling nog vooruit gaat. Al is de muziek even zwart als het hoesje, dit is één van die platen die alle verandering in mijn muzikale smaak zullen overleven. Pure onversneden rock met de voeten diep in de zuidelijke staten van Amerika. Je moet blijkbaar uit het hoge noorden komen, om dat op een werkelijk indrukwekkende manier op plaat te kunnen zetten. Een treffend bewijs dat de Vikingen als eerste Amerika hebben ontdekt.Posted by Victoriasjukebox at 09:45 Saturday, 22 September 2007One to watch...HYACINTH HOUSEOk here is one for you to watch…Hyacinth House.I caught these guys at the recent End of the Road Festival at Larmer Tree Gardens - they played it the very cute Bimble Inn (what a wicked name) on Sunday afternoon.They came on stage amidst a swirl of stirring strings and a front man with charisma straight from the Bob Dylan School of charm with a Scandinavian lilt. From what I can gather his brother plays guitar, banjo and harmonica and they all hail from Sweden. It was a bit tricky to find out more about them but hey that doesn’t matter anyway as it’s the music you’ll dig.Ok so to explain its like Dylan but more European, even I think sounding quite ‘English’ in places. It reminded me of a freezing cold walk on the beach in December with the sand whipping against your legs and the spray from the sea stinging your eyes. Searingly beautiful country, psychedelic, folksy music with a very rich sound – the bass player and drummer are gems and bolster what could be heard by some as a wishy washy sound. The addition of strings on most tracks takes the whole thing to another level – almost ecclesiastical.Beautiful, beautiful music…go ...
