Announcing the release of a new kind of jazz Christmas project! The Outtengrand Orchestra is a collaboration between five world-class musicians (who also happen to be close friends) based in Southern California. Their debut release, A Dangerously Groovy Christmas, is an 11-tune selection of fresh & inspired instrumental Christmas arrangements incorporating jazz, funk, latin, rock, pop and world music influences. All of the tunes were tracked live in the studio, and the resulting performances should be a breath of fresh air for those who long for the days of live musicians playing actual instruments with each other!'We set out to do a different sort of jazz Christmas project...not too smooth, yet still accessible... vibey and organic, with impassioned playing and interesting arrangements...and letting the art and heart prevail over market and formulaic considerations. We believe we achieved that goal, by God's grace...hope you agree! Here's wishing you & yours... A Dangerously Groovy Christmas. | | Herb Alpert What Now My Love CD (1966) Remastered; Special Edition
A Dangerously Groovy Christmas CD music
$9.99 With this album, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass settle into their hitmaking groove, the once strikingly eclectic elements of Dixieland, pop, rock, and mariachi becoming more smoothly integrated within Alpert's infectious "Ameriachi" blend. They sound more like a band now; along with Alpert's now-indelibly stamped trumpet sound, we can recognize jazzman John Pisano's distinctive rhythm guitar, Lou Pagani's piano, the droll Bob Edmondson's dulcet trombone, etc. Pisano, who debuted as a composer on Going Places, comes up with a memorably whistleable song "So What's New," and the rest ...

| | Steve Tyrell This Time Of The Year CD (2002)
A Dangerously Groovy Christmas CD music
$6.09 Steve Tyrell has attracted enough attention for his two regular albums, A New Standard and Standard Time, that he is almost beyond journalists' usual tack of describing a new singer's voice by who he sounds like; pretty soon, they'll be saying that other singers sound like him. But it remains true that if you have never heard him but you are familiar with Dr. John, your first reaction upon hearing him is likely to be that you are listening to Dr. John. Well, maybe a younger Dr. John, and one whose accent isn't quite as swampy. But the basic elements -- the grit and gravel in the tone, the slurred, deep South phrasing -- are much the same. Of course, Tyrell comes by the sound of his voice honestly, hailing from Houston, TX, and boasting a musical career (albeit, behind the scenes) as long as Dr. John's. But it remains true that Dr. John got there first, and so the comparison remains inevitable. As on his regular albums, Tyrell lines up a cast of jazz heavyweights for these small-group sessions, allowing plenty of space for soloing, particularly by trumpeter Clark Terry, who shines on "Rudolph the ...

| | Dom Minasi Goin' Out Again CD (2002)
A Dangerously Groovy Christmas songs
$10.65 Guitarist Dom Minasi follows up Takin' the Duke Out with another set of adventurous trio music, again featuring bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Jackson Krall. Leaving Ellington aside for the moment, Minasi offers "out" readings of other mainstream classics, namely "All Blues," "Well, You Needn't," "Green Dolphin Street," and "Autumn Leaves." But he fills the other half of the program with four originals, allowing listeners to view other facets of his musicianship. The originals are plenty "out" as well, but they're built upon thematic foundations that provide the ear a means of access. "Trane's Lament," an unaccompanied guitar track, changes the otherwise dizzying pace, much like "Solitude" did on the previous record. And Filiano's haunting arco work introduces "The Day After Next," a piece that lures the trio into a quasi-psychedelic space. Minasi's concept may not be grasped on the first listen, but it's worth the effort. ~ David R. Adler
After igniting storms of controversy with brilliant forays into Ellingtonia on his first CDM release, Takin' the Duke Out, guitarist Dom Minasi's trio returns with Goin' Out Again. The new CD features stunning interpretations of Miles' All Blues, Monk's Well You Needn't and two classic standards, Autumn ...
