| | George Jones 50 Years Of Hits CDs (2004)
Vern Gosdin: Super Hits album
$19.79 Even the title of the three-disc George Jones collection 50 YEARS OF HITS should be enough to tell you that the man being anthologized is one of the all-time giants of country music. A towering influence on all that followed him, not only in country but in rock and pop as well, Jones started out in the 1950s as a Hank Williams-influenced honky-tonk man who wasn't afraid of a little rockabilly either (the Hank influence is clearly audible on such early tracks as "Just One More"). By the '60s, he'd refined his approach, taking a bit from the jazz-inflected style of Lefty Frizzell and becoming a striking balladeer. "She Thinks I Still Care" and "Color of the Blues" stand as templates for how to sing a country ballad.
For most performers, that would have been enough, but Jones never stopped ...
| | Vern Gosdin Chiseled In Stone CD (1988)
Vern Gosdin: Super Hits CD music
$5.95 The 1980s were the beginning of a run of fine albums for Vern Gosdin that continued into the 21st century. It's true that he wasn't always as popular as he was in the late '60s and mid-'70s, but from his period on Compleat through his signing with Columbia and on into American Harvest Recordings in the late '90s, Gosdin has made solid, tough, and aesthetically beautiful country records. The new traditionalists, led by Dwight Yoakam, were the very movement that helped Gosdin regain popular acceptance for a time from the mid-'80s through 1993. Chiseled in Stone ranks as arguably his finest moment of that period. Produced by Bob Montgomery, the album features a deck of tunes from Gosdin and co-writers Hank Cochran and Dean Dillon; if Gosdin didn't co-write, Dillon and Cochran did. What's more, these songs were all written for Gosdin's wonderfully worn yet astonishingly versatile voice. "Do You Believe Me Now," the darkest and most wrenching song on the album, opens it. It's the story of a man on skid row who is suddenly and unexpectedly visited by his ex, and he convinces her by his very ravaged existence that he cannot live without her and asks the question in the title. As Sonny Garrish's steel winds out underneath Gosdin's vocal, all of the pain and pathos in the song comes at the listener full force, yet with the softness of Gosdin's voice, it is believable as a tender revelation as well as a song ...

| | Asylum Street Spankers Pussycat Bootleg Series, Vol. 2: Live Rarities 2000-2004 CD (2006)
Vern Gosdin: Super Hits music CDs
$10.05 While the Asylum Street Spankers have recorded a number of fine studio albums, their real strength is as a live act, and this collection of performances recorded at a variety of venues between 2000 and 2004 documents their charm and chops, and makes a strong case for their virtues. It's sometimes hard to tell how far this band's tongue lurks within its collective cheek, especially when the group takes on novelty tunes like "The Pussycat Song" or covers Nine Inch Nails with a mandolin and a banjo, but the Spankers' updated take on string band blues and jazz is invariably performed with skill and no small amount of enthusiasm -- and with a live audience to urge them on, they pull out the stops on these numbers. Christina Marrs delivers one hell of a lead vocal on "Got My Mojo Working" (and she's no slouch on the musical saw, either), Nevada Newman's guitar work is excellent throughout (dig his stylistic impersonations on "Since I Met You Baby"), the group covers Cozy Cole's pop novelty "Topsy" and turns it into a functional jazz ...

| | Billy Talent III CD (2009)
Vern Gosdin: Super Hits music CDs
$11.99 Adding swampy blues-rock and down-home muscle riffs to their punk-pop template, Billy Talent's third album, aptly titled BILLY TALENT III, owes as much to Zeppelin rock stomps as it does to latter-day Green Day. In the start of "Rusted from the Rain," vocalist Ben Kowalewicz sounds like a dead ringer for Billie Joe Armstrong in "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," but by the grungy, drop-D chorus of "Crush me like a flower, rusted in the rain/Strip me of my power, beat me with a chain," the inevitable bombast kicks in and ...
