| | Alan Jackson Super Hits CD Alan Jackson Discography of CDs
For most fans, it's inconceivable to have an Alan Jackson hits collection without "Chattahoochee" or "Don't Rock the Jukebox," neither of which are on the budget-line compilation Super Hits. And that, naturally, is a problem for the casual fan, the kind who would buy a budget-line disc expecting that their favorites would be present. That's not the case with Super Hits, which shares only four songs with the exhaustive 20-track Greatest Hits Collection. Those four songs -- "Chasin' That Neon Rainbow," "Who Says You Can't Have It All," "She's Got the Rhythm (And I Got the Blues)," "I Don't Even Know Your Name" -- are among Jackson's best and the remaining six songs (all album tracks, except "Must Have Had a Ball," a hit from the post-Greatest Hits album Everything I Love) are good as well, but this collection simply doesn't deliver the hits it promises. Taken on its own terms, as a random sampling of nine songs from Alan Jackson's catalog, it's entertaining and possibly even a bargain for listeners on a tight budget, but most fans are much better-served by the definitive Greatest Hits Collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Ralph Stanley Back To The Cross CD (1992)
Super Hits CD music
$12.59 Like Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley maintained his skills and spirit into the 1990s, still singing and picking classic bluegrass. He joined Freeland in 1992, and appropriately made his label debut a gospel session with the Clinch Mountain Boys. You wouldn't expect any surprises, and there weren't any; nor were there low points. The CD contained 12 wonderful renditions ...

| | Very Best Of John Michael Montgomery CD (2003)
Super Hits album
$10.15 Recorded between 1992 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Robert K. Oermann.
Though he has always essentially been a new traditionalist country singer in the vein of Aaron Tippin and George Strait, John Michael Montgomery found his greatest success with smooth, romantic ballads that recall the work of Glenn Frey as much as that of Merle Haggard. THE VERY BEST OF JOHN MICHAEL MONTGOMERY lives up to its title by including most of the singer's finest and highest-charting singles in both styles, in the process collecting a body of work that virtually defines the "new country" phenomenon. Montgomery has the kind of soothing pipes and perfect phrasing that endear him even to ardent country-haters, and his material has the kind of straight-for-the-gut forthrightness that ...

| | Merle Haggard Greatest Hits Vol. 2 CD (1994)
Super Hits music CDs
$5.65 During his ten years at Capitol Records, Merle Haggard recorded 36 Top Ten hits and numerous chart-topping albums. These recordings, made between 1966 and 1976, established Haggard not only as one of country's most successful artists, but also as one of its most eloquent spokesmen for working-class values. Curb's GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2 includes 10 such hits recorded between 1969 and 1976; the label has also released a VOLUME 1 that covers Haggard's earlier Capitol recordings.
Despite the implied sociopolitical content ...
| | Pickin On Pickin' On Aerosmith CD (2000)
Super Hits songs
$14.45 Pickin' on Aerosmith is a continuation of the quirky Pickin On tribute series from the CMH label that applies bluegrass instrumentation to classic rock tunes. Unfortunately, the music of Aerosmith doesn't translate well to bluegrass and songs like "Sweet Emotion," "Dream On," "Mama Kin," and "Last Child," featuring mandolin, banjo, and petal steel, end up sounding ...
| | Cry Cry Cry CD (1998)
Super Hits album
$14.95 Something of a New Folk supergroup, the trio of Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Wiliams (all successful solo singer-songwriters) may take you back to the glory days of Crosby, Stills & Nash with their delicate, intricate harmonies and earthy folk-rock arrangements. Putting their solo projects on hold for a moment, the three decided to collaborate on this project in tribute to some of the great songwriters (including many relative unknowns) whose work has moved them. With arrangements that feature their three-part harmonies prominently, CRY CRY CRY moves through tunes by Greg Brown (the existential Gospel of "Lord, I Have Made You a Place in My Heart"), Buddy Mondlock (the sentimental folk fave "The Kid") and others, some whose names are bound to be new to most listeners. The trio takes turns on lead vocal from song to song, but their shimmering ...
