Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu directs this film starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. BABEL is the crowning achievement in the trilogy from the unstoppable creative pairing of screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga and director Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, which also includes AMORES PERROS (2000) and 21 GRAMS (2003). Building upon its predecessors' method of weaving together disparate storylines, BABEL reaches new heights of ambition with a tale that, in the absence of traditional narrative and protagonist, relies on numerous incredible performances to evoke an affecting relevance by framing contemporary issues in very human struggles and mistakes. Richard and Susan (Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett) are a wealthy couple from San Diego who are vacationing in Morocco in order to heal after the death of their young child; their other two children are at home with their Mexican maid, Amelia (Adriana Barraza). In a complex shift of ownership to which the audience is privy, a rifle finds its way into the hands of a local herdsman's young sons (Said Tarchani and Boubker Ait El Caid), who recklessly take a shot at a tour bus and catch Susan in the shoulder, causing her to nearly lose her life. The distraught Richard calls home to tell Amelia of the situation, who promptly departs for Mexico to attend her child's wedding, with Richard and Susan's children in tow. Disaster thus multiplies, with the situation in Morocco ascribed to terrorists in the media, while Amelia meets with the harsh immigration policies of the Bush administration. Meanwhile, in Tokyo, a widower (Koji Yakusho) tied to the rifle in question attempts to deal with his memories and his raucous, promiscuous, deaf daughter (Rinko Kikuchi).
Nearly every performance of the film is devastating, offering an intimate, emotional experience that would approach melodrama if it weren't rendered so realistically. Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto's color palette masterfully captures the muted tones of the harsh natural landscapes of Morocco and the Mexican border, as well as the fluorescent lights of Tokyo that denote another, though equally barren, end of the spectrum. The misunderstandings born of cultural, language, and class barriers are on par with those that occur between family members, depicting a world that, while connected in the least expected of ways, is also faced with a deep-seated crisis that threatens to alienate humanity from itself.

Babel Movie Review Average Rating: (3.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews astounding film, one of the best of the 2006 Babel is about four interlocking stories set around the world: A little boy shoots at a bus to impress his brother and injures a young woman which is perceived as a terrorist atack in morroco. The woman (Cate Blanchett)is there with her husband (Brad Pitt) to recover from losing their third child. The couple's nanny (Adriana Barraza)takes their children to Mexico for her nephew's wedding, little aware of the consequences. And a mute Japanese girl (Rinko kikuchi)longs for her dead mother while spiraling out of control. This is a riveting, extradinary film that is has a superb script and is stunningly directed. Rinko Kikuchi delivers a towering, emotionanlly shattering performance which,no offense to Jennifer Hudson, should have won the best supporting actress oscar. Adriana barraza heartbreaking, sturdy performance is also quite impressive as is the rest of the cast. This is a great film which needs to be seen. Possibly the most emotionally intense film I have ever seen It is true, I am making a big hype around my statement, but this film moved me into a point of emotional suffering I have never felt before in a film, and states something very unsettling about how disconnected society and cultures from differing areas are from one another. Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who also directed the story of Amores Perros, has made yet another film in his trilogy that is incredibly hard to watch, but if you can bear it and sit through it is worth watching in the end. Now, the whole stories in this film are all connected somehow, but arent fully revealed until the very end, and the performances are incredible. The thing that makes this film so great is not what it shows, but how emotionally charging it becomes. Brad Pitt shows character as a broken husband who cares for what could be his wife's dying hours, and Rinko Kikuchi shows incredible talent as a young teenager who feels lonesome and mentally unhealthy after her mother killed herself. Those were the two highlights, but all the films characters were portrayed so well. The drawback is that this is really a film where you do have to know about what film is meant to be, and not all film is pretty, and it also needs to be thought through. Although I admit, it was exhaustingly painful and brings tears no matter who you are, its conclusion to this shattering drama brings you to a state of emotional resurrection. I honestly am suprised this film didnt take the Best Picture award, compared to The Departed. Overall, one of my favorites... Submitted by Jules (Coral Springs, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Trailer 5 stars the Movie 2 stars I saw the trailer for Babel on another DVD. What an amazing trailer. I was first to buy the DVD when it came out. Unfortunately the movie was horrible. There is 2 complete different story lines in this film and too much sexual situations involving children. Which has nothing to do with different cultures not understanding one another. $10.25 British director Christopher Nolan's (BATMAN BEGINS) eclectic resume gains another interesting entry with THE PRESTIGE. The basic plot, which concerns the rivalry between two magicians in early 20th-century London, closely resembles a fellow 2006 movie--Edward Norton's THE ILLUSIONIST--and the two films are sure to be closely compared. In Nolan's film, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale bring the characters of Robert Angier and Alfred Bordon to life. Robert and Alfred were young magician apprentices together, but became bitter rivals as their careers began to shape their adult lives and a terrible accident claimed the life of Robert's wife. In the subsequent years Robert has become wildly jealous of Alfred's superior talents, so in a last ditch attempt to steal some artistic ground he sends his assistant, Olivia (Scarlett Johansson), to infiltrate his rival's lair and steal the secret to a spectacular trick called "The Transported Man."

$7.89 Director Martin Scorsese returns to his trademark style with the violent, bruised, and bloody feature THE DEPARTED. Scorsese filched the basic storyline from Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak's masterful 2002 Hong Kong action film, INFERNAL AFFAIRS, which saw a policeman going undercover as a mob member and a mob member infiltrating the police force. Scorsese transfers the action to Boston, positioning Leonardo Di Caprio as undercover cop William Costigan and Matt Damon as undercover mobster Colin Sullivan. While Costigan and Sullivan get into plenty of nail-biting situations that almost reveal their true identities, Scorsese gradually unravels his strong supporting cast, including Jack Nicholson as Sullivan's mob boss, Frank Costello; Ray Winstone as Costello's meat-headed muscle; Mark Wahlberg as a hot-headed police sergeant; and Vera Farmiga as a love interest for both ...

$10.25 Clint Eastwood's early-21st-century output has endeared him to Academy Awards voters, and he makes another bid for their attention with this tale of the flag-raising at Iwo Jima. Eastwood cuts back and forth between the battle that led to the flag being firmly planted in enemy soil, and the tour undertaken by three of the flag-planting Marines (played by Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, and Adam Beach) in the aftermath of World War II. The re-creation of Iwo Jima features impressive APOCALYPSE NOW-style battle scenes, the air full of thick plumes of smoke, zinging bullets, and pounding explosions. But the most interesting part of the movie comes as the three men are paraded in front of the American public, as ...

$10.29 After a great deal of discussion--on the part of fans and producers alike--over Daniel Craig's (THE MOTHER, MUNICH) suitability for the role of James Bond, he more than proves himself in this explosive revamping of the franchise. Under the direction of Martin Campbell (THE MASK OF ZORRO) and with Paul Haggis (CRASH) helping with the re-writes, this addition to the Bond canon manages to hold true to the essence of the stories--the villainous villains, the fabulous sets, the beautiful women, the fast-paced action--while updating the formula with subtlety and humanity.
Trading in the Cold War era for a new, post-9-11 landscape, the tale unfolds in locations that span the globe, including the Bahamas, Venice, and the Czech Republic. It opens in Madagascar, where Bond pursues a guerilla bomb-maker in one of the most breathtaking chase scenes ever--and it all takes place on foot. Botching that assignment, Bond goes to Montenegro to square off against terrorist baddie Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelson), an international loan shark who gambles with ...

$11.29 British director Ridley Scott may not seem a logical choice for this truly American crime drama, but the filmmaker does an excellent job. The film is based on a true story and set in 1968 Harlem, where Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) is a driver for Bumpy Johnson, one of the top figures in the city's criminal world. When Bumpy dies, Lucas swoops in, taking over his predecessor's empire and expanding it over the next few years with his sale of a particularly potent brand of heroin. Meanwhile, New Jersey cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins to investigate the New York drug world and discovers that there's a new power in town.
Thanks to screenwriter Steve Zallian, as well as Washington and Crowe, AMERICAN GANGSTER creates a convincing ...
