One of the all-time great war films, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI is yet another classic from the marvelous David Lean (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, DR. ZHIVAGO). The film is an outstanding, psychologically complex adaptation of Pierre Boulle's 1952 novel, a classic story of English POWs in Burma forced to build a bridge to aid the war effort of their Japanese captors. British and American intelligence officers conspire to blow up the structure, but Col. Nicholson (a fabulous Alec Guinness), the commander who supervised the bridge's construction, has acquired a sense of pride in his creation and tries to foil their plans. Although credited to screenwriter Carl Foreman, the script was actually written by blacklisted writer Michael Wilson. The film garnered seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Guinness). The climax is one of the great finales in film history.

THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1997. Sri Lanka, then Ceylon, stood in for Burma (now known as Myanmar).

"...It's certainly weathered well thanks to its novel and ingenious approach to presenting multiple perspectives of the Second World War..." -- John Walker, Total Film

"...[T]wo compelling stories jelled into one sprawling action film..." -- Premiere Staff, Premiere

5 stars Classic: In top twenty-five of all time
William Holden won the best actor oscar for the 1953 classic "Stalag 17", another WWII prison flick, but lost out to Alec Guinness for "Bridge". However, Holden did decide to "not get paid" and instead took a percentage of the movies gross earnings. First actor to do so and, consequently, the first actor who never needed to work again. This is one of those rare, wonderfully classic movies with great direction by David Lean, beautifully acted by ALL involved and a great story. Quite simply one of the best movies made.

1 star Fairy tale
My Father was a POW held by the Japanese, as for this film goes it is a fairy tale, so far away from the truth, OK the acting is okay but the screen play and script is a fantasy, and is very cosy to watch, as if you were to watch what really happened you would be very shocked. sorry

5 stars The quintessential Saturday night movie
For me, this movie represents the very essence of sitting at home on a Saturday night watching a movie. The various elements comprising this movie (not the least of which is the music)are essentially perfect and meld to form something which is greater than the sum of its parts. I'd also have to say that this movie holds tremendous nostalgic value for me, which no doubt contributes to its enjoyment.

Though HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN director Alfonso Cuaron still holds the crown for best film in the series, David Yates is making an attempt at a coup with HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE. Dark, gleefully funny, and beautifully shot, this adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novel should please fans despite numerous changes to the 650-page source material. In this sixth film in the series, Harry’s (Daniel Radcliffe) inevitable confrontation with the dark wizard Voldemort grows closer, and Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) wants the young student to be prepared. He guides Harry through a memory of a young Voldemort, but an important moment is missing. Harry must extract this memory from the new Hogwarts teacher, Horace Slughorn (a perfectly slimy Jim Broadbent), who is as eager for fame as he is reluctant to revisit this painful moment. Meanwhile, romance rules the school of witches and wizards, with Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) refusing to admit their feelings for each other. Harry also harbors a secret love of his own: Ron’s younger sister, Ginny (Bonnie Wright). But despite his crush, Harry keeps an eye on Snape (Alan Rickman) and Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), who may be responsible for attacks on the school. HALF-BLOOD PRINCE deftly balances the humor of Hogwarts heartbreak and the thrills of dark villains attacking the school. The cast is as talented as ever, and the youngest members--Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson--have developed their talent well. However, this film is most remarkable for ...
