Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English This classic film was based on the real-life exploits of legendary British scholar and soldier T.E. Lawrence. Stationed in Cairo in 1916, Lawrence languished in the mapmaking department of British Intelligence until he was asked to find and gather information on Prince Feisal, leader of the Arab Allied forces in World War I. His desert journey inspired his first military success when he led a small contingent of Arabs against the Turkish stronghold of Aqaba. Lawrence's military career flourished as he attempted to forge a new, united Arab nation out of squabbling tribes. David Lean's masterpiece, perhaps the greatest of screen epics, stars Peter O'Toole in one of the most electrifying debuts in film history. The film is less an ordinary adventure than an experience that leaves an overwhelming sense memory of the struggle between two powerful forces: the Arabian deserts, immense, intractable, ever-shifting, punishing; and T.E. Lawrence, humble as a monk, flamboyant as a rock star, protean, polymathic, heroic, enigmatic, mad. While working on the staff of British Intelligence in Cairo in 1916, Lawrence's fluency in Arabic earns him a post on a mission sent to establish contact with Prince Feisal (Alec Guinness), leader of the Arab revolt and ally of the British against the German-sponsored Turks in WWI. Impressed by Lawrence's knowledge of their culture, the prince allows the young officer to join his staff, and Lawrence quickly earns the Arabs' respect after he executes acts of extraordinary heroism. As the Englishman's genius for guerrilla warfare becomes evident, he assumes the role of de facto leader of the Arab revolt, uniting the heretofore warring tribes into a devastatingly effective weapon. But the chaos of war also unleashes the repressed officer's powerful need for self-abasement and mortification of the flesh. A visionary work that unfolds one indelible image after another, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA fuses the conflict of man against man, man against nature, and man against himself into a sublime poem of force. The film features a literate script by Robert Bolt and an outstanding cast, which also includes Claude Rains, Jack Hawkins, Arthur Kennedy, Anthony Quinn, Jose Ferrer, and Omar Sharif in his unforgettable desert-crossing debut. Theatrical release: November 1962 (England), after a premiere for Queen Elizabeth.
Theatrical release: December 16, 1962 (USA).
Filmed at Shepperton Studios in Middlesex, England, and on location in Jebel Tubeiq and Wadi Rhumm, Jordan; in Sevilla, Spain; Aqaba, Turkey; and in Morocco. The three-year project completed shooting in October 1962.
Estimated budget: $13-15 million.
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1991.
John Ford was originally slated to direct the film, with Alexander Korda attached as producer.
Director David Lean died in 1991 shortly after he was awarded the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award in March 1990.
Academy Award nominations: 10, including Best Actor--Peter O'Toole, Best (Adapted) Screenplay. Academy Awards: 7, including Best Picture, Best Director.
The restored version contains 35 minutes of previously cut footage.
Producer Sam Spiegel reportedly wanted Marlon Brando for the role of T.E. Lawrence, but he was already occupied with MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY. Albert Finney was also offered the role but declined because he didn't "want to be a star." (American Film, March 1990)
Director David Lean once described T.E. Lawrence as "a fascinating character. This Oxford don on camelback--I mean, it was absolutely nutty. Sort of intellectual, with a gang of Arabs on camels, you know." (American Film, March 1990)
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA was named Best Film of 1963 by Italy's David Awards, Best Foreign Film of 1963 by Japan's Kinema Jumpo, and Best English Language Film of 1962 by the National Film Board.
Lean received Italy's Silver Ribbon Award and Japan's Kinema Jumpo Award for Best Director of 1963. He was also named Best Director of 1962 by the National Film Board.
Peter O'Toole received Italy's David di Donatello Award for Best Foreign Actor of 1963.

Lawrence Of Arabia Movie Review Superbit wins again! Lawrence of Arabia has never looked or sounded better! Almost everyone is familiar with this award winning insight into how war affects a man's psyche but what struck me was how relevant the political aspects of Arabia seem even yet today, long after WW1 has ended. And those close ups of Peter O'Toole's expressions of joy, grief, and horror are reason enough to see this film. By the way, the color is the best yet I've seen in a transfer of this film. Go superbit! Submitted by a reviewer (Dubuque, IA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Do not miss this one Arguably the greatest epic ever made. Brilliant directing from David Lean and excellent performances from the entire cast. O’Toole was a convincing T.E. Lawrence who effectively used his facial expressions, and above all his blue eyes, to convey to the audience a wide range of mental states: confusion, internal struggle, indecisiveness, and determination. The cinematography was excellent, and so as the music score. The contrast of the desert was brought out brilliantly by Lean: from the enchanting dawn/sunrise to the murderous noon, treacherous quick sands, and blinding sandstorms. There were a couple of imperfections though. All Arab characters spoke English with accent except Auda( Anthony Quinn ), why? In the battle for Aqaba, with the camera at close range, one could see a Turkish soldier fell before the saber of the Arabic horseman stroke. Did a bullet kill the Turkish soldier or the saber? Despite these minor imperfections, Lawrence of Arabia is undoubtedly a masterpiece of masterpieces. I enjoyed it thoroughly and watched the entire movie( three and a half hours ) three times within the first ten days I bought the movie( single disc version ). Now I have purchased the 2 discs version to see how the movie was made and the short documentary of T.E. Lawrence. This is a riveting story of a fascinating man. Did he came to Arabia to fulfill his destiny, to pursue his own ambitions, or to help his country's war effort to expel the Turks from Arabia and Palestine, or to unite the feuding tribes to help form an Arab state, or all of the above? essential In short, this is the greatest movie ever made. It is nearly 4 hours long, and yet that time passes in a moment and you wish there was more. There is nothing about this film that is not utterly perfect. Amazingly, it is not an exaggerated dramatization, but closely and exactly follows the true life events outlined in T.E. Lawrence's mesmerizing and poetically erudite autobiography "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom".
A previous reviewer mentioned the delay at the beginning in which the screen is dark for several minutes. This is part of the film, it is the overture, several minutes of music that play while the screen is dark, just as with opera and theatre in which the orchestra plays for several minutes before the curtain rises.

Stunning! How can anyone possibly find fault with this movie? One outstanding scene is where one of Lawrence's cohorts is mortally wounded when a blasting cap is accidentally set off as they are preparing to to sabotage railroad tracks. Just watch O'Toole's eyes while his Arab headgear covers the rest of his face. He remains silent while his eyes simultaeneously reflect panic, anxiety, and confusion. This five-second scene defines acting genius. This is one of those films where everything clicked. The combination of script, music, dialog, acting, location, props...make this the greatest movie ever made; at least one of the top ten. Stunning. My favorite movie. "Lawrence Of Arabia" is my favorite movie and it is one of the best movies of the 1960s. Peter O'Toole, in his Oscar-nominated role, is T.E. (Thomas Edward) Lawrence, a British officer, who led the Arabs against the Turks during World War I from 1915-18. This movie is the winner of 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture. The Limited Edition 2-disc DVD is a must for anyone who owns a DVD player. Submitted by a reviewer (United States) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Lawrence Of Arabia DVD
$8.35 A landmark in film history, EASY RIDER blew the studio doors open for more young directors than any film before or since, helping to create the wide-open climate that would lead to the production of many outstanding films in the 1970s. As its director, Dennis Hopper is usually given the lion's share of credit for the film's success, but the revelations of time suggest that the contributions of the late Terry Southern and, to some degree, Jack Nicholson have endowed the film with much of its residual power.
Starring Peter Fonda as Wyatt (alias Captain America) and Hopper as Billy, it traces the hippie duo's adventures as they mount their seriously chopped hogs on a journey to find the real America en route to Mardi Gras. In Arizona, they visit a commune whose members are having a tough time, and in a small Texas town they're jailed for joining a parade. But they're quickly sprung by an ACLU lawyer, the quirky, hard-drinking George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), who accepts their offer to join them on the trip to New Orleans, eager to visit the best whorehouse in the South. EASY RIDER accurately reflects the tensions and hostilities of the period, Laszlo Kovacs's photography is superb, Nicholson is exceptional in his breakthrough role--and the startling, stunning ending is a shocker.
This 95 minute feature film is a special edition DVD starr ing Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson, Karen Black , and Luana Anders.

Lawrence Of Arabia movie DVD
$10.25 Clint Eastwood's early-21st-century output has endeared him to Academy Awards voters, and he makes another bid for their attention with this tale of the flag-raising at Iwo Jima. Eastwood cuts back and forth between the battle that led to the flag being firmly planted in enemy soil, and the tour undertaken by three of the flag-planting Marines (played by Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, and Adam Beach) in the aftermath of World War II. The re-creation of Iwo Jima features impressive APOCALYPSE NOW-style battle scenes, the air full of thick plumes of smoke, zinging bullets, and pounding explosions. But the most interesting part of the movie comes as the three men are paraded in front of the American public, as they vacillate between embarrassment and anger at the public relations campaign they find themselves embroiled in, while also pleading with the public to help provide funds for the soldiers who are still at war.
Eastwood uses a script co-written by CRASH director Paul Haggis and a source book written by James Bradley, the son of John "Doc" Bradley (played by Phillippe in the film), to tell this affecting tale. Tom Stern, who worked with Eastwood on MILLION DOLLAR BABY, employs his skills as a cinematographer once again, deftly coupling vast panoramic battle scenes with darkly contemplative moments between the touring soldiers. Fascinatingly, the director's next jaunt behind the lens was LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA, which provided the Japanese perspective on this famous event.
Clint Eastwood's World War II film is released in a 2 DVD set. Extras include film introduction, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and making-of documentary.
