This compilation album is built primarily out of two previous Bryn Terfel albums. It contains 11 of the 20 songs first heard on his tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein, Something Wonderful (1996), and ten of the 19 songs on his tribute to Alan Jay Lerner, If Ever I Would Leave You (1998), and it concludes with the only track not taken from those discs, a performance of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas." Actually, the two albums work better on their own than they do with their tracks mixed up together, and the choices made by the compilers are not always the best. They are to be commended for including not only the best-known songs Terfel sang by Rodgers and Hammerstein and by Lerner, with his primary partner Frederick Loewe, but also relatively obscure tunes such as "Come Home" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Allegro and "Here I'll Stay" from Love Life, a musical Lerner wrote with Kurt Weill. But they miss some of Terfel's better interpretations, such as "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" from Something Wonderful, and "Camelot" from If Ever I Would Leave You. Nevertheless, Terfel remains a superior singer of this 1940s and 1950s Broadway musical material, especially in comparison to the efforts of other opera singers. He cares about the lyrics and has a good sense of the humor of songs like "There Is Nothing Like a Dame." As a bass baritone, he is naturally at his best in songs actually written for that register, such as "Some Enchanted Evening," but he also makes his own songs written for tenors, such as "On the Street Where You Live" and "Younger Than Springtime." Still, especially because of the questionable selections from the two separate albums, one would be better off buying them instead of this reduction. ~ William Ruhlmann
