| | An All-Star Tribute To Lynyrd Skynyrd CD (1 Customer Review)
Judging from the tragedy they had to endure and the impressive sting of classic anthems and albums they recorded, Lynyrd Skynyrd certainly warrant the tribute album treatment (although just about every bloody band has been "tributized" by now). And in 2007, they got it -- with the release of the 13-track An All-Star Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Largely comprised of veteran classic rock acts, there are also a few surprising contributors -- including '80s pop-metal acts Great White and Dangerous Toys. But by and large, it's one big Southern rock fiesta -- as exemplified by readings of "Gimme Back My Bullets" (by Pat Travers), "What's Your Name" (by Jim Dandy's Black Oak Arkansas), and "You Got That Right" (by Rick Derringer) that don't stray far from the originals. Also included is a rendition of "Double Trouble" which features former Skynyrd members Ed King and Artimus Pyle, as well as a laid-back yet groovy version of "That Smell" by Canned Heat. And as expected, Skynyrd's two best known tracks are included as well "Free Bird" (Molly Hatchet with Charlie Daniels) and "Sweet Home Alabama" (The Outlaws) -- but instead of closing the album (as Skynyrd often does in their live shows), they lead off the album. As with all tribute albums, An All-Star Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd features some keepers, some stinkers, and some that fall somewhere in between. ~ Greg Prato

An All-Star Tribute To Lynyrd Skynyrd songs
$10.49 Since the release of her debut Sour Pie in 1995, Holly McNarland has released one critically acclaimed album after another. In unflinching lyrics, lingering melodies and a powerhouse voice, Holly has spent the past decade cataloguing her life with music. Chin Up Buttercup is the singer-songwriter’s fifth record, a narrative that reflects on motherhood, loss and the everyday. Recorded in local Vancouver studios over the last two years, the album stems from Holly’s rocky relationship, a difficult break up, “and just plain living life,” she says. As always, the album showcases the singer songwriter’s inventive compositions and lyrical depth, as well as her trademark, razor sharp one-liners.Much has happened since the Winnipeg-native with the commanding pipes put out EP independently. Following the success of Stuff, her Universal debut in 1997, Holly shipped out to Vancouver, where the birth of her son sparked a creative spell that would become her third album, Home Is Where My Feet Are. In many ways, Chin Up Buttercup picks up where that record left off. From the sensual “Memory of A Man,” to the bubbly “Da Da Da,” written in part on her son’s kazoo, Chin Up Buttercup is beautifully eclectic, exuding the confidence of a songwriter in her creative prime. Haunting acoustic guitar melodies alternate with heavier riffs, Holly’s commanding vocals playing overtop it all, from her inimitable screams to the honeyed whispers. Much has been made of Holly’s walloping voice, specifically that it comes from such a small frame – she stands 5’4.” ...
