Hard to figure out how Carl Cox ran out of titles for his mix CDs already but 2007's Global is an entirely different album than 2002's Global and it's a little better too. The two-CD format gives Cox the room to create some drama. The first Global went for the hard, fast beats right from the get-go while the second version slowly works up to it, causing a bigger, better payoff. It's also beneficial since one of the DJ's great strengths is making hard techno sound a lot less cold and off-putting than other DJs, mainly by sneaking it in between the kind of slick electro tracks that someone like Oakenfold might favor. Here, the build-up makes usually dour folks like Umek sound like party music, albeit tasteful party music that's still edgy enough to annoy your parents. The selection is inspired, the mixing is impressive, and the flow is near perfect. The centerpiece to the whole collection is Cox's own "Get What You Paid 4!" presented here in its rather spacy Jon Rundell remix. There's also a watch once and forget about it bonus DVD with some live footage and plenty of interviews. ~ David Jeffries

WHEN DREAM & DAY UNITE, the major label debut from prog-metal act Dream Theater, includes the tracks "YTSE Jam" and "Only A Matter Of Time."
Dream Theater's first official release gave an indication that this was a talented band that combined the styles of Yes, Rush, and Queensr˙che. The latter seemed to be too big of an influence at this stage of their career. Vocalist Charlie Dominici's voice is not powerful enough to carry out the band's otherwise convincing intensity, and his attempt to sound like Queensr˙che's Geoff Tate was unsuccessful. The music here is not as heavy as it would become in the '90s but could still be classified as progressive metal. Guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy established themselves as competent musicians, but their individual styles were not yet refined. Formed from ex-members of Grade, Jersey is an Ontario, Canada-based band who sounds more like they should be from Richmond, VA. This is said because of the obvious Avail and Ann Beretta sound, as well as the fact that Robbie Hutchinson from Ann Beretta sang on a song. A couple of the tunes have really catchy choruses which will only take a few listens to make the listener sing along. She's Having a Baby was the last in a series of 1980s coming-of-age movies written and usually directed by John Hughes, following Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), Pretty in Pink (1986), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), and Some Kind of Wonderful (1987). In the earlier films, Hughes had focused on high school, but She's Having a Baby traced the lives of a young couple from marriage to the birth of their first child. It was a comedy-drama examining American middle-class mores in the '80s, and Stewart Copeland's score matched its tone, while such musical inclusions as the male lead character's labored attempt at procreation to the tune of Sam Cooke's "Chain Gang" added humorous elements. You won't hear any of that music on the original motion-picture soundtrack, however. Hughes had a track record for assembling successful soundtrack albums, notably getting gold-record certifications for The Breakfast Club (which featured the number one hit "[Don't You] Forget About Me") and Pretty in Pink. Although She's Having a Baby was set in Chicago, he put together a ten-track album of recordings by British acts, including a title song from ex-English Beat singer Dave Wakeling; new songs from XTC, Everything but the Girl, and Kate Bush that touched on the film's theme of family; tracks from recent albums by Love and Rockets and Gene Loves Jezebel; and inspired covers by Bryan Ferry and Kirsty MacColl. It's no secret that the time gap between albums by guitarist Eric Johnson is on par with such notorious 'hibernators' as Boston. And the arrival of his fourth all-new studio release, Bloom, was no different, as it appeared nearly nine years after the release of 1996's Venus Isle. Whereas most guitar heroes of the late '80s and early '90s were all about reeling off a zillion notes per second, Johnson was the exception, as he penned songs that saw his guitar supplying the melody where a voice could have been. This 16-track release (his second for Steve Vai's Favored Nations label) is split into three separate sections -- 'Prelude,' 'Courante,' and 'Allemande' -- which are supposedly "grouped together in terms of vibe and style." Highlights include "Summer Jam" (which does a splendid job of showcasing his guitar tone), the chicken'-pickin' ditty "Tribute to Jerry Reed," and the almost Steely Dan-esque "Magnetized." If you like your sounds raw and gritty and music off-the-cuff, Bloom isn't the place for you. But for die-hard fans, Johnson delivers once more, as all his trademarks are well represented -- chops, tone, and extremely fluid playing. ~ Greg Prato
