After mining the Beatles gold mine for all those catchy hooks, by the time that Balance of Power was released, Jeff Lynne and company had pretty much found that once-rich vein going dry. This album did contain yet another Top 40 hit with "Calling America," but by the mid-'80s, ELO were finding their audience and their inspiration on the wane. Not truly memorable, but passable. [In 2007 Epic/Legacy reissued Balance of Power with seven bonus cuts, including alternate takes of "Heaven Only Knows," "Secret Lives" and "Sorrow About to Fall," U.K. b-sides "Caught in a Trap" and "Destination Unknown" and the previously unreleased "In for the Kill" and "Opening."] ~ James Chrispell
1986's BALANCE OF POWER, the last ELO album to feature Jeff Lynne--the rest of the group re-convened as ELO Part II in the late '90s with cult-fave singer/guitarist Parthenon Huxley replacing Lynne--looks at first like a dubious attempt at '80s-style modernization. The cliched, dated graphics--and keyboard player Richard Tandy's red-flag credit for "programming"--notwithstanding, this is a fine example of Lynne's '80s work. The opening "Heaven Only Knows" is a catchy tune with Lynne's trademark overdubbed Beatlesque harmonies that would have fit in well on OUT OF THE BLUE or DISCOVERY. The rest of the album is less immediately enthralling, but that's due to the slightly antiseptic, MIDI-heavy production, not the caliber of the songs. Listening past the surfaces reveals these songs to be a solid set of tunes well in Lynne's tradition of melodic pop.

5 stars Great remastering job !
Greatly overlooked ELO CD -- "Calling America" and "So Serious" are top-notch tracks. Pick up this CD -- it really sounds amazing.

4 stars A must for the ELO collection
Ended up losing my original version but glad I did so that I had to buy this remastered version. The alternate version of Heaven Only Knows alone is worth it. This sounds much better than the original in my view. Some different sounds for ELO here but the majority work really well. Sounds better now as an album than it did when released.

5 stars LYNNE´S FAREWELL
GOOD SOUND. THE ALTERNATE "HEAVEN ONLY KNOWS" AMAIZING!!!. NEW SOUND FROM E.L.O. TO BE UNDERSTOOD BETTER NOW ( WITH THIS REMASTERED ISSUE ) 20 YEARS AFTER THE ORIGINAL EDITION. THE INSIDE BOOKLET AND ITS INFORMATION WITH PHOTOS, NOT TO BE MISSE BY ANY REAL ELO FAN.

5 stars Brilliant
Perhaps not their best album, but there are plenty of reasons to want to own this. The bonus tracks, especially In for the Kill and the alternative version of Heaven Only Knows are fantastic. So Serious has always been one of my favourite ELO songs, but it is far from the only memorable song here. You are guaranteed to find something that will catch your attention. And once again, Jeff Lynne cements his reputation as a musical genius.

George Harrison is credited on this album as "L'Angelo Misterioso."
Formerly the bass player for Cream, Jack Bruce's 1969 solo debut is presented here digitally remastered and with four additional tracks, including alternate mixes of "Ministry of Bag," "Weird of Hermiston," "Clearout," and "Ministry of Bag."
CD contains 4 bonus tracks.
With a live version of "Crossroads" going Top 30 for Cream, Songs for a Tailor was released in 1969, showing many more sides of Jack Bruce. George Harrison (again using his L'Angelo Misterioso moniker) appears on the first track, "Never Tell Your Mother She's Out of Tune," though his guitar is not as prominent as the performance on "Badge." The song is bass heavy with Colosseum members Dick Heckstall-Smith and Jon Hiseman providing a different flavor to what Bruce fans had become accustomed to. Hiseman drums on eight of the ten compositions, including "Theme From an Imaginary Western," the second track, and Jack Bruce's greatest hit that never charted. With "just" Chris Spedding on guitar and Jon Hiseman on drums, Bruce paints a masterpiece performing the bass, piano, organ, and vocals. The song is so significant it was covered by Mountain, Colosseum, and a Colosseum spin-off, Greenslade. One has to keep in mind that the influential Blind Faith album was being recorded this same year (and according to the late Jimmy Miller, producer of that disc, Jack Bruce filled in for Rick Grech on some of the Blind Faith material). Bruce's omnipresence on the charts and in the studio gives the diversity on Songs for a Tailor that much more intrigue. "Tickets to Water Falls" and "Weird of Hermiston" feature the Hiseman/Spedding/Bruce trio, and though the wild abandon of Ginger Baker is replaced by Hiseman's jazz undercurrents, these are still basically two- to three-and-a-half-minute songs, not as extended as the material on Bruce's work on his John McLaughlin/Heckstall-Smith/Hiseman disc Things We Like recorded a year before this, but released two years after Songs for a Tailor in 1971. The history is important because this album is one of the most unique fusions of jazz with pop ...
