| | Fall Time Enough At Last CDs (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Spiketaculars
$13.39 This 3 CD set compiles the 1997 albums OXYMORON, THE LIGHT USER SYNDROME, and CHEETHAM HILL. Hits, alternate takes, B-sides, demos -- it's all Fall, all the time.
Two clichés to get rid of right away are that Time Enough at Last is another unnecessary outtakes-and-live compilation to clutter the Fall's unwieldy discography and that it's for hardcore fans only. The three discs included were all originally released with little information on when, where, and who by the Trojan Records imprint Receiver. The new liner notes by Record Collector's Daryl Easlea do 'fess up to the dodgy roots of these releases, so at least there seems to be some concern ...

Spiketaculars
$14.59 Among other things, the 1997 Texaco New York Jazz Festival was the occasion for the release of this compilation of vocal jazz artists singing in a variety of styles and deliveries. The cuts are from already issued material from a variety of labels. Irrespective of the source, the result is a smorgasbord of jazz vocalizing by top flight practitioners of mediums represented on the album. The play bill includes a straightforward swinging version of "Doncha Go 'Way Mad" by Deborah Harry and rocker Elvis Costello, who does well in the swing medium. The cut featuring Abbey Lincoln is intriguing with Savion Glover's tap dancing accompanying Lincoln and in a duet with Michael Bowie's bass. The avant-garde approach to singing is well delineated here, as one would expect from Knitting Factory Works. Lo Galluccio sings "You Go to My Head" like a lament with little reference to the melody, pulling it off without pretension. A disappointment in a sense is the calm, "normal" rendition of "Prelude to a Kiss" by a pioneer of the avant-garde, Norma Winstone. ...
| | Fantastic 4 Alvin Stone (Death Of A Gangster)/Night People CD (2001)
Spiketaculars
$17.89 This two-fer consists of the Fantastic Four's best album and its spirited but flawed follow-up, Night People. Alvin Stone (The Birth and Death of a Gangster) is the Fantastic Four's What's Going On, their Songs in the Key of Life, their Abbey Road; its six songs include the bombastic title track and the melodramatic love songs "My Love Won't Stop at Nothing" and "Let This Moment Last," which are reasons enough to buy this CD. Night People tries to replicate Alvin Stone's artistry with melodies from "Night People" and "Lies Divided By Jive." The other tunes are OK but nothing special, with the most memorable being "If I Lost ...

| | Black Maria Shared History Of Tragedy CD (2006)
Spiketaculars
$10.69 Look at the band name, look at the cover art, look at the album title and even the label, and you get a pretty good idea of what to expect from this disc: huge chainsaw guitars, double-bass drums, tricky time changes and lots of screaming, maybe some of it in that Cookie Monster voice that we've all come to love so much. Right? Wrong. Opening with a spare intro consisting of tom-toms, orchestral strings, a hint of electronica and, okay, just a little bit of yelling, the Black Maria's A Shared History in Tragedy knocks your preconceptions over and then proceeds to run roughshod over them for the remainder of the album's length. That's not to say that their guitars aren't plenty loud, or that their singing isn't plenty aggressive -- it's just that the aggression and noise are consistently harnessed in the service of both great pop hooks and, as often as not, genuinely complex song structures. Note, for example, the structural intricacy and sharp melodicism (and ...
