The debut album by the long running British rock institution finds their formula already in place - a little blues, a little folk, a little Yes style riffing, and some endearingly cosmic lyrics. The band's basis is the tag team guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner.
In what was a fairly innovative move in 1970 the two alternate harmony riffs a la the Allman Brothers ("Blind Eye") or play dueling solos in the manner of the San Francisco bands that preceded them. In fact, the album's centerpiece, the epic 10-minute "Phoenix," is precisely the sort of psychedelic jam that used to really wow them at the Fillmore during the Summer of Love--think the Grateful Dead with a tighter rhythm section.
(2-CD set) Veteran melodic rockers Wishbone Ash carved a niche for themselves in the early 1970s and remain an active touring band. Studio album "Illuminations" is combined with a great live concert here. Wishbone Ash Songs | | Wishbone Ash CD DISC 1: |

Wishbone Ash
$6.49 The third release by Kim Simmonds and company, but the first to feature the most memorable lineup of the group: Simmonds, "Lonesome" Dave Peverett, Tony "Tone" Stevens, Roger Earl, and charismatic singer Chris Youlden. This one serves up a nice mixture of blues covers and originals, with the first side devoted to studio cuts and the second a live club date recording. Certainly ...
| | Savoy Brown Looking In CD (1970)
Wishbone Ash
$6.49 Savoy Brown's blues-rock sound takes on a much more defined feel on 1970's Looking In and is one of this band's best efforts. Kim Simmonds is utterly bewildering on guitar, while Lonesome Dave Peverett does a fine job taking over lead singing duties from Chris Youlden who left halfway through the year. But it's the captivating arrangements and alluring ease of the music that makes this a superb listen. The pleading strain transformed through Simmonds' guitar on "Money Can't Save Your Soul" is mud-thick with raw blues, and the comfort of "Sunday Night" is extremely smooth and laid back. "Take It Easy" sounds like it could have been a B.B. King tune as it's doused with relaxed guitar fingering. The entire album is saturated with a simple, British blues sound but the pace and the marbled strands of bubbly ...

| | Ten Years After Space In Time CD (1971)
Wishbone Ash
$8.85 A SPACE IN TIME was Ten Years After's biggest commercial success. The reasons are pretty obvious; Alvin Lee's songwriting had improved markedly and there was far more stylistic variety than on their previous albums.
The big hit here was "I'd Love to Change the World," with its catchy acoustic guitar hook and the immortal opening line, "Everywhere is freaks and hairies." Other highpoints include: "Baby Won't You Let Me Rock 'n' Roll You," the band's first stab at Stones-style raunch (complete with a riff from Led Zeppelin); the country-ish romp "Once There Was a Time"; and the gently ...

| | Cruisin' 1957 CD (1986)
Wishbone Ash
$9.25 The predecessors of hip-hop MCs or just thwarted rock & rollers with giddy natures? Early rock & roll DJs -- heirs to the trailblazing, early-'50s R&B and blues DJs in Memphis and Nashville -- could make a small claim to both labels. To millions of '50s teens, at least, they offered salvation from a increasingly staid world of modern kitchen appliances and sock hops. Culminating with the nationwide fame of Alan Freed and given a major blow by his subsequent indictment during the payola scandal, early DJ culture produced a wealth of fast talking and often goofy radio personalities who introduced the country to Elvis, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard. For listeners equally enthralled by both the vintage DJs in-between-song patter and the music of the era, Increase Records has put together several volumes spotlighting major-market DJs on the air from 1955-1970. This third installment, Cruisin' 1957, features WIBG's Joe Niagara from Philadelphia. He's half hipster, half car salesman, mixing praise for Berry's "School Days" with spots pushing Muntz-brand TV's. All the cuts are classics: the Coasters' "Searchin'," Larry Williams' "Bony Maronie," the Spaniels' ...
| | Capitol Years: Ode To Bobbie Gentry CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Wishbone Ash
$11.79 This collection features 21 tracks from Bobbie Gentry, including her hit "Ode to Billy Joe" and covers of "Son of a Preacher Man" and "In the Ghetto."
Among the most undefinable performers ever to be marketed as "country," Bobbie Gentry possessed extraordinary talents as a husky-voiced singer, pioneering female producer, and songwriter that landed her at the top of the pop charts in 1967 with "Ode to Billie Joe." While she achieved lasting fame due to that fictional incident on the Tallahatchie Bridge, Gentry's string of albums for Capitol in the late '60s and early '70s reveal a deeper, more album-oriented artist. THE CAPITOL YEARS-ODE TO BOBBIE culls hits and highlights from these albums and represents some of the best of her enigmatic fusion of Southern soul, classic American pop, and countrypolitan. "Mississippi Delta," the gritty lead-off track, mines the same Southern Gothic territory as "Ode to Billie Joe," while the minor chart hit "Fancy" reveals a flair for contemporary '70s pop. More stunning still are the two tracks from her highly underrated arty roots-psych opus THE DELTA SWEETE, "Big Boss Man" and "Reunion." While Gentry's first two albums remain essential listening for fans looking for more, THE CAPITOL YEARS-ODE TO BOBBIE is a fantastic collection for neophytes or enthusiasts wanting all the best in one place.
She busted onto the pop music scene in 1968 with her mammoth chart topping hit "Ode To Billie Joe", prompting millions ...
| | Gina X Performance Voyeur CD (2005)
Wishbone Ash
$14.15 Meant to be a self-conscious reaction to X-traordinaire and its perceived poppiness, Voyeur, the final album released under the full Gina X Performance name, is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the lyrics certainly aim for a return to the cold confrontationalism of the debut -- if you're going to call a song "Pederast Dissection," one might as well go all out. Meanwhile, having a song about a dying figure "confessing his sins" when the song is called "Kaddish" and the lead character is Jewish is a bit curious, to say the least -- having the spoken word break about the burial ritual followed by a funky synth solo is unavoidably creepy, which was doubtless the intent. But on the other hand, especially in comparison to the homegrown brutality of D.A.F., then becoming an unexpected pop sensation in West Germany, Voyeur is often fairly restrained. There's giddy synth pop merriment and slow-paced moodiness throughout, to be sure, but compared to the dramatic, commanding arrangements for "Nice Mover" and "No GDM," songs like "Horror Vacui" come across as either competent copies or all-too-obvious rewrites. It's not an unattractive combination by any means, and Zeus B. Held's production holds its own, but the group was already hitting a rut. If anything the rhythms work better than the melodies -- on "Babylon Generation" a solid enough Moroder/disco beat gets cooked up, but the lead synth sounds so dorkily quirky that one wonders just where the difference between this and X-traordinaire is. There is a sense of unexpected futurism throughout, though, in that the prominence of male voices on many choruses ...

| | Berryman, Lou & Peter House Concert CD (2007)
Wishbone Ash
$18.99 Frequent comparisons to Will Rogers and Dorothy Parker, and Burns & Allen notwithstanding, Lou & Peter Berryman are originals, melding midwestern culture with street smart savvy. With influences as diverse as Woody Guthrie, Gilbert & Sullivan and Jacques Brel, but always with a twist of their own, Lou and Peter Berryman write songs of inventive and intelligent humor. Their whimsical and wonderfully accessible performance of these hilarious and quirky, oddly profound songs make audiences laugh 'til their cheeks hurt and care for themselves and for each other.Formerly married and longtime friends, in their almost 30 years together, Lou & Peter have recorded 16 albums of their original songs. Such venerable and prestigious venues as Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage, The Ark in Ann Arbor, and New York’s Caffe Lena have hosted them regularly. They have performed frequently on national public radio including Minnesota’s ...
