Singer-songwriter Jann Arden's star has dimmed in the United States since her Lilith Fair era heyday; like her cohorts Lisa Loeb and Jewel, she's even taken to reality television hosting gigs to help pay the bills, and 2007's Uncover Me was only released in her native Canada. That's a shame, because as all-covers records go, this is a fine example of the form. Some of Arden's song choices are perhaps a bit obvious -- the Mamas & the Papas' "California" Dreamin'," Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man," and Cat Stevens' "Peace Train" were not calling for new interpretations -- but throughout the album, she resists the twin urges that doom this kind of project, neither slavishly imitating the originals nor going for bizarre, forced re-interpretations that go so far out of their way not to sound like the familiar tunes that she might as well have simply written new songs. Instead, she merely approaches all ten songs as if they were new Jann Arden originals, delivered in her uncomplicated, conversational vocal style over glossy but not sterile or overfilled arrangements. There are some truly inspired song choices in the realm of familiar songs that one wouldn't expect to show up on this sort of disc, such as a kicky take on Petula Clark's "Downtown" that retains the hint of melancholy that underscores the original, a downright spooky version of Janis Ian's "At Seventeen," and a sneering version of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" that sounds more like a lost Liz Phair track. The most inspired covers, however, are the bracing "Bring the Boys Home," Freda Payne's anti-Vietnam powerhouse that's sadly all too relevant during the Iraq war, and an inspired reworking of Pat Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield" that strips all the cheese out of the original (including that hysterically campy video) and transforms it into a tense, haunted meditation on a toxic love affair. It's songs like those that make covers albums worthwhile, and Uncover Me, for its faults, is overall quite satisfying. ~ Stewart Mason
2007 issue of the beloved Canadian singer/songwriter's first exclusive collection of cover songs. While Arden has recorded numerous covers before, this set is entirely made up of songs written by other people. The first single from the album is "Bring The Boys Home", a song originally made famous by Freda Payne (better known for her hit "Band Of Gold") that actually made it into the US Top 15. Arden also puts her personal stamp on "Peace Train", "Love Is A Battlefield", "You're So Vain", "Downtown", "Son Of A Preacher Man" and more! Jann Arden Uncover Me Songs Uncover Me Review

| | Allison Moorer Duel CD (2004)
Uncover Me music CDs
$14.69 Once upon a time, Allison Moorer was a country artist who sang for a major record label. It might be easy then, to see her switch to Sugar Hill as a back-to-the-basics move, a reconnection with her country roots. Moorer, however, isn't that predictable, and The Duel -- while many things -- isn't country. In fact, the opening cut -- "I Ain't Giving Up on You" -- sounds a lot like classic rock and most of the album follows this course. This is interesting, in that Moorer's a strong writer, and it would've been easy to fall back on a tasteful country-folk production and become a fairly typical singer/songwriter. ...

Uncover Me CD music
$13.69 A full decade after Billy Bragg and Wilco teamed up to set to music unrecorded lyrics of Woody Guthrie on Mermaid Avenue, now Jonatha Brooke has done the same. Unsurprisingly, she takes quite a different approach than they did, starting with her choice of co-producer, Bob Clearmountain, whose mountain of production and engineering credits have run the gamut from Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones to Sheryl Crow and Brooke's previous release, Careful What You Wish For. Here Clearmountain goes for a slim, shimmering sound that emphasizes Guthrie's words and Brooke's delivery over the music's sonic properties. But that's not to slight the rest of the crew here, which includes some of the finest jazz and pop musicians working today: Christian McBride on acoustic bass, Steve Gadd on drums, Joe Sample and Mitchell Froom on keyboards, and a handful of A-list guests including Hiram Bullock, Derek Trucks, and Eric Bazilian on guitars; Gil Goldstein on accordion; ...

Uncover Me album
$9.39 Although 1982's COMBAT ROCK signaled the last time the original lineup of the Clash would record together in the '80s, 1985's CUT THE CRAP was officially the band's last gasp of that decade. After COMBAT ROCK, crafty songwriter and experimentalist Mick Jones was forced out of the Clash--going on to form the outstanding hip-hop/rock hybrid ...
