Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English Charlotte Brontė's Gothic romance gets the BBC and Masterpiece Theater treatment in this two-part miniseries. Ruth Wilson plays the title role, one of the most beloved characters in classic fiction, thanks to her independence and intelligence. After a difficult childhood, Jane finds work as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There she meets and falls in love with its mysterious owner, Edward Rochester (Toby Stephens), though things aren't as simple as they seem. Prior to this role, Stephens may have been most recognizable for playing a Bond villain in DIE ANOTHER DAY. But he turns in a performance here that may place him next to Colin Firth's legendary Mr. Darcy in the hearts of viewers. Jane Eyre Movie Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Excellent! I am not usually a fan of romantic movies, but "Jane Eyre" is truly wonderful! The actors played their roles to perfection! It is inspiring and exciting. When I saw it aired on PBS' Masterpiece Theater, I knew I had to buy the DVD! fantastic This is one of the best versions of Jane Eyre I've seen. It does miss some of the book, but I suppose they have to so they can make it different from the others. Anyway, I loved it! The acting from both actors is amazing, Toby Stephens is one of my favourite Rochesters ever. Ruth Wilson does well for her first time acting. Well, its wonderful, I hope you like it too. $14.99 BECOMING JANE is based on an incident in the life of the beloved writer Jane Austen, and follows the real-life romance that inspired her classic novels. Like many of her heroines, Jane (Anne Hathaway, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA) is bright, strong-willed, and unwilling to marry merely for money, even though her family is struggling financially. Though many of her friends wish her to pair up with the nephew of a rich woman (Maggie Smith, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX), Jane wants something more. When she meets the Irish rogue Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND), she initially can't stand him, but their romance blooms, serving as the inspiration for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.
Director Julian Jarrold (KINKY BOOTS) is no stranger to literary fare. Though BECOMING JANE is only his second feature film, he directed several productions for British television, including GREAT EXPECTATIONS, CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, and WHITE TEETH. At times, BECOMING JANE feels exactly as it should: a long-lost Austen novel that's just been rediscovered. The themes and characters here seem familiar, as they've appeared in Austen's work many times. There's the devoted father, difficult mother, loving sister, and, of course, the charming young man with whom the protagonist initially ...

$10.29 Life imitates art in this adaptation of Karen Joy Fowler's bestselling novel about a book group reading the work of Jane Austen. Each of the people in the group is at a different stage of life: there's Sylvia (Amy Brenneman), whose husband has just left her for another woman, and her daughter Allegra (Maggie Grace), who's looking for a woman herself. Bernadette (Kathy Baker) has six marriages under her belt, while Jocelyn's (Maria Bello) most significant relationship is with her dog. New to the group of friends are Prudie (Emily Blunt), a teacher who is unhappy with her marriage, and Grigg (Hugh Dancy), the group's only man--a sci-fi fan invited by Jocelyn to take Sylvia's mind off her failed marriage. As they make their way through Austen's novels, they discover that the writer's work is just as relevant in the 21st century as it was in the 19th. The group has its own Emma, and a sparring would-be couple bears striking resemblance to Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy.
THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB succeeds largely thanks to the strength of its cast. Bello is better known for dramatic roles in films such as THE COOLER and THE HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, but she does an excellent job with this film's lighter tone. As know-it-all Prudie, Blunt steals just as many scenes as she did in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Though ...

Jane Eyre review
$14.99 Acclaimed filmmaker Alexander Sokurov (RUSSIAN ARK) brings us this sensual study of the bond between a strapping Russian father (Andrey Schetinin) and his soldier son (Aleksey Neymsyshev). In a dreamy rooftop apartment overlooking the sea, the pair wrestle, lift weights, bond, pore over old photos of lost loved ones, and stare longingly into each other's eyes. Some neighbors and a girlfriend drop by, but this is a two-person movie all the way, with deep manly currents ebbing and flowing amid the hallucinatory fairy tale symbolism. The gorgeous photography by Alexander Burov bathes everything in a nostalgic golden light, as if it's all about to fade into one of the ancient photographs that adorn their walls. The presence of old radios playing endless variations on Tchaikovsky suggest this is all occurring in some timeless place of the mind, a notion confirmed as the father-son bond on display begins to ...

$11.35 British-born photojournalist Zana Briski overcame barriers of language, culture, and ethnicity when she immersed herself into an impoverished and illegal neighborhood in the Third World metropolis of Calcutta, India. An award-winning photographer, Briski befriended the children of Sonagachi (the city's red light district), starting a photography workshop for them and equipping them each with their own camera. The transformative power of this simple object is remarkable; within weeks, the children show new spirit and several have discovered a talent for the art. Briski and her co-director, Ross Kaufman, follow the children as they filter their marginalized, forgotten world through the camera lens. Over the course of the film, a central narrative unfolds--the children's quest, fueled by their newfound hope and strength, to leave the brothels for a better life.
The directors frame the children in extreme close-ups, caressing their features and capturing each subtle change of expression. By intercutting their own images with those taken by the children, the directors establish the distinct personality and voice of their subjects. Among them are Avijit, a rotund, serious 11-year-old of immense talent, whose mother is murdered by her pimp during the filming; Kochi, a quiet slip of a girl, destined to follow the family line of prostitution; and Puja, a feisty tomboy whose tenacity allows her to photograph the district's ...
