| | Dark Clan Oh, But The Stars Still Shine... CD Dark Clan Discography of CDs
This is the sound of a heart on a sleeve. This is the sound of the Dark Clan. The only core member is listless (that's me), guitar player for Stromkern, Null Device, Siv, and member of the Gothsicles, for whom I do whatever darkNES tells me to do. Other contributors contribute wonderful things to the music of The Dark Clan all the time, for which I could never thank them enough. The Dark Clan is a repository for all the songwriting detritus hanging out in my head that has never fit into any band I've ever been in, hence the lack of a coherent overall style. The only things lending any sense of "band-ness" to this collection of songs are my undying love for good melody and big beats, and my weird obsession with first- and fourth-species counterpoint, which techniques appear in just about every single one of these songs. Some of this is quite serious, and some of it is not. But it is all sincere earnestly so. As unfashionable as credulity and honesty and sincerety and earnestness and straghtforwardness seem to be, all of this is it. Even the un-serious bits. Or, in a nutshell, the music of The Dark Clan sounds like the sonic version of a wacky sitcom starring a bunch of vampires sharing a castle together; one is a balladeer, one is gay, one is a metalhead, one is from 14th century france, etc. They all more or less get along. Oh, But The Stars Still Shine... album
$14.79 The music of California songwriter Gwendolyn is playful, poignant yet oddly magical. Influences include The Incredible String Band, Nick Drake, Dolly Parton, The Moore Brothers, Bob Dylan and Syd Barrett. Gwendolyn writes songs that inspire the mystery inside. Drawing from nature and a sense of spiritual responsibility, her lyrics form images that will inevitably lead you through that open-ended challenge: a search for Self. Gwendolyn's compositions push the boundaries of expected time changes and ordinary song structure, yet a welcome familiarity remains. Addressing divergent topics that include insects, sexuality, politics and heartbreak, Gwendolyn presents life as she sees it and her listeners are presented with a surprise, and ultimately, a treasure. Her debut ULTRASOUNDS (Whispersquish, 2000) features songs recorded between 1995-1999, including the acclaimed childlike anthem, "Freedom of the Heart (Ooodily, Ooodily)," heard repeatedly in the cult film CHUCK & BUCK starring Mike White (Artisan, 2000). Shortly after its release, Gwendolyn recruited friends whose instruments naturally lend themselves to her slightly left-of-center music. Musician, Douglas Lee (Uva Ursi) returned home from living in New Orleans to build a glass harmonica - 26 different shaped wine glasses sonically tuned. Lee then added the saw and banjo to his repertoire. Jazz junkie Robert Petersen, returned from Berkeley to contribute his warm upright bass. Rounding out the ensemble, Brandon Jay, aka Quazar (The 88), Quazar and the Bamboozled), acquired pots, pans, water bottles, gadgets and gizmos to form what's known as his "drum set." Gwendolyn decided to capture their harmonic chemistry live in the studio. She asked veteran players Smokey Hormel (Beck) and Ralph Carney (Tom Waits) to add their talent to the mix. The result is DEW (Whispersquish, 2003). Producer Ben Vaughn (Ween, Arthur Alexander) flew Gwendolyn to Scotland to create a more traditional sounding folk album with the local musicians there. LOWER MILL ROAD, named after the studio's whereabouts, is scheduled for release in January 2006 (Soundstage 15/Whispersquish).Adorning ...

| | Salvagesound 12 Reductions CD (2007)
Oh, But The Stars Still Shine... CD music
$16.45 There's a pervading darkness to Salvagesound's release "12 Reductions (2005)", a feeling of somthing haunted and mysterious, enigmas and riddles and secrets all wrapped up around eachother in a knot that can't be undone without losing yourself in it's intricacies. Using processed field recordings and found sounds, Matthew Poulakakis of Salvagesound has created a wonderful collection of tracks that sets fire to the imagination."corq" opens the disc with a series of scraping and abstract sounds suggesting percussive elements but too random and alien to be heard as drums. It's a suspenseful piece, a very dramatic work that creeps along slowly but effectively towards it's resolution. "tuebe" follows, a track that brings to mind the sound of the void as portrayed by a drifting drone. It's nice work, quite engaging in it's minimalism as form and shape become apparent throughout. Track three, "Alvalva", continues along similar lines, building on a theme and then diverging into new territory. Irregular chirps give this track an organic sense, a feeling of life caught in the middle of an industrial wasteland. "terranoid" introduces metallic ringing to the mix, playing randomly overtop an oscillating drone. A small melody can be heard just on the edge of the track, something to anchor the listener's senses but too faint to identify beyond it's presence. "ixuni" comes in at track number five, an oscillating drone rising ...
