Colin Blunstone recorded his first solo album (after the Zombies broke up) in 1971, and it's wavered in and out of availability domestically ever since. While this 2007 re-release has no extras or refurbishments, it doesn't need to--it is a nearly perfect album of sweet ballads, gutsy rock, and even some blue-eyed soul. The sensitive arrangements, replete with strings, supports Blunstone's achingly lovely voice.
The debut solo album from Colin Blunstone, lead singer of legendary psych/pop group The Zombies, originally released in 1971. Produced by fellow Zombies Rod Argent and Chris White, "One Year" is classic Baroque pop with lush string arrangements and ArgenUncut (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's Chris Gunning's baroque string arrangements that really stand out, bringing a pleasing continuity, wholly in tune with Blunstone's breathy vocals." Magnet (p.92) - "[P]roper pop songs both upbeat and soulful. The root of all chamber-pop beauty is here..." One Year
$33.75 The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.
Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and adventurism culminated on this album which encompassed tongue-in-cheek fun ("Lazy Sunday") and passionate love songs ("Afterglow"). Steve Marriott's voice remains completely self-assured and the group's characteristic organ-based swell is often enhanced by P.P. Arnold's emotional backing vocals. Eccentric comedian Stanley Unwin narrates the concept ...
| | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005)
One Year
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also ...
| | Roger Daltrey Daltrey CD (1973) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered; United Kingdom
One Year
$13.15 Although Roger Daltrey was by no means the first member of the Who to take the solo plunge (both John Entwistle and Pete Townshend beat him to the punch), he was the first to make any kind of commercial impact. While "Giving It All Away" peeled off his self-titled debut album to hit the U.K. Top Five, the album itself went Top 50 in America and, almost as an afterthought, introduced the writing talents of the young and then-unknown Leo Sayer to the public at large. Eight months ahead of his own breakthrough hit, "The Show Must Go On," Sayer and writing partner Dave Courtney composed eight of Daltrey's ten tracks; Courtney co-produced the album with Adam Faith, then wrote the remaining pair with Faith himself. Of Sayer's contributions, both "Giving It All Away" and the opening "One Man Band" would subsequently reappear on his own Just a Boy album, itself titled for the chorus line of "Giving It All Away." Daltrey's ...
