When the year 2007 rolled around, Europe continued to seriously dominate the death metal/black metal field (something it had been doing since the '90s) as well as goth metal, progressive metal, and the power metal revival movement. But one area where the United States remained quite dominant was the metalcore/hardcore realm; the vast majority of metalcore or screamo bands that emerged in the early to mid-2000s were American bands. There are exceptions to that rule, certainly -- and one of them is Japan's Lost Eden, who offer by-the-book screamo on Cycle Repeats. Screamo (which shouldn't be confused with either traditional metalcore or technical metalcore and math metal) goes by several other names, including post-hardcore, melodic hardcore, and emotional metalcore. But whatever name one uses, screamo has experienced big-time saturation; the style has been beaten to death by a ton of bands that sound alike, and Lost Eden don't bring anything out of the ordinary to screamo on this 2006 recording/2007 release. The familiar screamo elements -- lots of swirling guitars, tortured introspection, angry screaming vocals contrasted with clean sensitive vocals -- are very much a part of the totally predictable Cycle Repeats. And once you get past the fact that Lost Eden are from Japan, there is nothing that sets them apart from countless American screamo bands that follow the very same musical recipe. Of course, not every band that comes along is obligated to be strikingly original; most musicians in any genre are going to be followers rather than leaders, and that isn't necessarily problematic because a lot of albums that are highly derivative are also inspired and quite enjoyable. But Lost Eden, for all their bombast, never sound truly inspired. Bottom line: the problem with Cycle Repeats isn't so much that it is derivative as the fact that the performances and material, although generally competent, simply aren't very memorable. ~ Alex Henderson

Cycle Repeats songs
$22.05 Death metal veterans Disbelief have had a tough time making headway in a country -- Germany -- where melodic power metal reigns supreme. Had they been from Sweden, where the opposite status quo exists, who knows where they would be by the release of Spreading the Rage, their fifth album. But Disbelief doesn't play your run-of-the-mill death metal either -- almost, but not quite. No, although reliably enraged in their delivery, memorable offerings such as "Ethic Instinct," "Addiction," and the title track are ...

Cycle Repeats songs
$11.49 Recent Press for Lo Fine:\"If Iron and Wine have been getting too burly for you lately, you might check out this engaging folk Americana album. The mood of its gently reflective and often lovely songs (Damage Twins; Remotely Together; Sight Behind Lids) ranges from hushed to haunting, mellow to melancholic, given an added intimacy by a singer whose voice is a whisper louder than Sam Beam\'s.**** 4 stars\"-Mojo Magazineāas disarmingly lovely as any album youāll hear this yearāor this decadeāa nearly ideal agglomeration of melancholy pedal steel, close, minor-key harmonies and weathered rumination....This is special. If you ever laid in bed all Sunday morning listening to Matthew Sweetās Girlfriend or got over a lost love to the soundtrack of Hollywood Town Hall, you ought to hear Not for Us Two.ā-PopMattersāNot For Us Two is a straightforward sounding record. No maddening metaphors or tricky hooks clutter the sparse acoustic songs and general melancholy that has become Lo Fineās trademark. Not For Us Two acts out in subtle and gentle fashion. A combination of Jeff Tweedy and a mournful Zach Rogue, OāRourke brings genuineness to what could otherwise be contrived or overly standard thematic situations. Lo Fine utilizes a less-is-more stance to music....the album is satisfying in an age of over sensory acts cramming every corner with noise. Lo Fine allow the songs to expand at a slow, but natural pace, bringing a warmth and finally a welcomed resolution.ā-Alarm Magazineāthe slow-motion playing, gentle vocal, lilting lullaby of pedal steel all serve to relax, and very calming it is. The closing āMy Favourite Illusion (Not for Us Two)ā is another indolent warm afternoon. I feel as though I should be throwing open the windows and letting in the breeze when the pile of harmonies and counterpoints arrive things are elevated again. This is an enjoyable set of songs that has a unity of approach.ā-Americana UKāNot For Us Two is akin to Son Volt, Bonnie Prince Billy and at times, the later period Red House Painters....The lyrics are direct and honest, O\'Rourke shirking any kind of obscurity in the straightforward delivery of the words...If there is a theme to Not For Us Two, it is one of aching while being separated, whether by a breakup or by distance, from a loved one...This album has KEXP written all over it by the songwriting and the production. It will comes as no surprise to hear these songs on the station in the coming months.ā-Three Imaginary GirlsāLo Fine is essentially the work of Kevin O\'Rourke ā though....our eyes lit up to see that ex-Scud Mountain Boy Bruce Tull has a hand in shaping this gentle alt-country shuffle with his unmistakable pedal steel work...this one comes from a new EP of unreleased B sides. Dig that brush work! And Kevin\'s easy mourning vox.ā-StereogumāIt\'s as much a logical extension of the attractively darker side of such sounds from the seventies as it is of more recent ...
