We Strike! album
$11.55 Technically speaking, "Outsider Art" is art produced by the unschooled and or insane. Technically speaking, Stephen Cohen is neither. | | Jacob Koller Music For Bowlers CD
We Strike! music CDs
$16.45 Jacob Koller's "Music for Bowlers" is anything but another jazz piano trio. Splicing three vastly different musical experiences with a common purpose, the group successfully challenges the limits of this traditional instrumentation. With a classic trio synchronicity, they come together like an ensemble with years of playing, writing, and touring under their belts. Koller's compositions are all over the map with regards to their genre. Yet, like Akira Kurosawa's film "Dreams", all have a distinct and identifiable characteristic that ties them together into an intricately woven rug. Shorter pieces like "Knit to Own" and "New Goods" have a distinct setting and reveal the nuances of a particular scene from a multi-dimensional photograph. While "Qing" and "Gig for Gag" are epic adventures into unexplored territories that will keep you engaged for the turn of every corner. Even riddled with complex time signatures and unexpected metric modulations, a piece like "Nello" feels so natural that you will want to get up and dance. A very special quality to the music is its appeal to a wide audience. Traditional jazz-heads are intrigued by the beautiful harmonic complexity and the spontaneous improvisations. Younger rock fans are mesmerized by the band's ability to make torturous rhythmic grooves sound fluid and raw. Others appreciate the lyrical melodies and the overall feelings evoked within each piece. Although this music is extremely difficult to place in a single category, one thing is certain, "Music for Bowlers" is for anyone and everyone. BiographiesJacob Koller (piano)A Phoenix native, Jacob began playing piano at age 4. At age 5 he gave his first recital and before entering high school had won over 10 classical piano competitions including the Arizona Yamaha Piano Competition. At age 14 he discovered his true passion of improvisation and composition when he joined his high school jazz band. Due to his natural musical ability and proficient technique he picked up on jazz very rapidly and within one year was performing all over the Phoenix area with Arizona’s top jazz musicians including Dennis Roland and Jesse McGuire. He attended Arizona State University on a full jazz scholarship where he studied classical piano ...
| | Miguel Migs Those Things Deluxe CDs (2007) (Import) Special Edition; United Kingdom
We Strike! songs
$21.69 Make no mistake, Miguel Migs is a master of sound. His particular brand of electronic dance music incorporates a variety of elements and influences, and he blends them brilliantly, creating a bright and colorful tonal palette that puts many of his colleagues to shame. Where he doesn't seem to stand out is in his ability to either write or inspire lyrics that are worth hearing. His latest artist album is filled with sharp rhythms, beautiful textures, and catchy melodies, but deep lyrical banality is a constant problem. Every eye-rolling dancefloor cliché is present in at least one song: from LT robotically intoning that she wants to "get down tonight" ("Get Down") to Tim Fuller informing you that "it's on tonight" and bleating "baby baby baby baby" ("Body Never Lies"), the words are a constant disappointment. Luckily the sassy and percolating beats make it easy to ignore that aspect of the music, especially on such booty-moving grooves as the title track and the startlingly funky "Fire," on which reggae singer Junior Reid helps turn the song into a sort of breakbeat-reggae fusion that works brilliantly. Overall, this is a perfectly functional dance collection that achieves occasional greatness. ~ Rick Anderson
