Purchase Iron Mics CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | R Kelly Untitled CD (2009)
Iron Mics album
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely up-tempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One").

Arranger: R. Kelly.
12 Play: 4th Quarter leaked well ahead of its intended release date, and "Hairbraider," its intended lead single, deservedly flopped, prompting R. Kelly and Jive to shelve the project. Over a year after the leak, and just in time for the 2009 holiday season shopping rush, a new R. album in the form of Untitled receives an official release, featuring a track list drastically different from that of the leaked album. Given that R. had maintained a relatively low profile since his June 2008 acquittal on child pornography charges, Untitled is his least eventful release in nearly a decade. Somewhat surprisingly, he leans on a lot of collaborations. He handles only two tracks by himself, farming out the production and songwriting assistance to an assortment of mostly up-and-coming figures who contribute to no more th
| | Michael Jackson's This Is It CDs (2009)
Iron Mics CD music
$15.05 Originally intended as a chronicle of Michael Jackson's possible reascension to the pop king throne by way of a massive 50-date tour, the documentary THIS IS IT became something much different when Jackson suddenly died mere weeks before its kickoff. Now a movie capturing the complicated figure in vulnerable moments during the last days of his life, THIS IS IS boasts a soundtrack comprised of the classic originals of the hits featured in the film. It also contains a new single co-written by Paul Anka and featuring Jackson's brothers on back-up vocals, as well as a variety of demos.

| | Juvenile Cocky And Confident CD (2009)
Iron Mics music CDs
$14.24 Shaking off the personal tragedy of losing his four-year-old daughter to gun violence a year earlier, Juvenile's 2009 effort is just what it says on the cover. Cocky & Confident is also a return to form for the rapper, filled with the street music and club tracks that helped launch his career, along with all the provocative sniping that Juvy always nails. During the opening title track it's "If you a pitbull/I'm Mike Vick," while later, during the Dirty South triumph that's "I'm Out Chere," it's the flat-out admittance that "I'm no humanitarian" before some bragging about his gear begins with "All white Guccis like an Aryan." The bedroom numbers like "Make U Feel Alright" with Kango Slim work just as well, balancing polish and pimp attitude with skill, and while the social commentary found on Reality Check is missed, there's the overall feeling that Juvy isn't ready or willing to deal with heavy topics at this point. That's fine since he actually sounds exhilarated and -- as he declares during the title track -- "reJuvynated" to be getting back to more lighthearted material. ~ David Jeffries
| | Tony Dize La Melodia De La Calle CD (2008) (Import) Updated
Iron Mics songs
$13.29 After dozens of memorable appearances on reggaeton compilations, Wisin & Yandel protégée Tony Dize makes his full-length debut on this 2008 collection. Over the course of 15 tracks, the Puerto Rican singing star establishes a unique sound that blends the fire and minor-key menace of reggaeton with a more laid-back, soulful groove. A bonus track revisions his hit "Quizas" as a spicy salsa number.

| | Dick50 Acquired Taste CD (2009) Digipak
Iron Mics album
$14.05 ACQUIRED TASTE was produced by Don Was and recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles. He might seem a strange producer for McClinton, who has had a consistent "sound" for decades, despite his wide array of stylistic adventures. But Was is better than anybody who has produced his records since the late '70s: he understands that McClinton's voice is showing signs of age, and that that's not a bad thing. Using members of the singer's road band and some crack studio aces, Was adds some killer rhythmic touches in this 13-song set that runs the gamut. Ultimately, ACQUIRED TASTE is one of, if not the best, studio outing McClinton's issued this decade. If this album takes a spin or two to get acclimated to, it's well worth the investment.

| | Nas Illmatic CD (1994)
Iron Mics CD music
$6.09 Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair.
ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary tale of the inner-city streets, and as Nas makes plain on his opener, "The Genesis," this is what he does, with or without a record contract, and it's going to be served up straight, no chaser. And because Nas has the courage to transcend popular trends, to separate himself from the ranks of wannabes and me-toos, he may be on the verge of inaugurating some stylistic changes of his own.
Production-wise, Nas has gathered together some of the superstars of the hip hop underground, producers the likes of Q-Tip, Pete Rock, L.E.S., DJ Premier and The Large Professor, but it is Nas's unique rhythmic cadences, his idiomatic sense of on-the-street wordplay, his disrespect for the high time and the empty rhyme that distinguishes ILLMATIC. When Nas rocks the mic, it's not a hedonist's wet dream, but a depiction of urban hope and despair, and thanks to Nas's poetic insights, he soon transports you there (in a manner seldom seen in black pop since the days of Stevie's INNERVISIONS and Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOIN' ON?).
Landmark 1994 debut from Queensbridge rapper mixed dope beats with elevated, poetic, but sternly street rhymes.

| | Joni James Platinum & Gold: The MGM Years CDs (2002)
Iron Mics songs
$24.35 This 2 CD set takes her three LP hits collection Award Winning Album, Award Winning Album Vol. 2 and More Joni Hits and tracks on six more hits for a total 42 tracks and 26 of her 31 chart-making songs. Almost all of these tracks come from the original tapes. Joni herself contributes copious quotes to the notes and the foreword is by longtime Joni admirer Barbara Streisand. Remastered. Collectors' Choice. 2002.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Prior to Platinum & Gold: MGM Years, there had not been a definitive compilation featuring pop vocalist Joni James' literally dozens of chart hits. This was certainly not due to lack of interest, but rather that James owns her own master tapes and has been picky -- to say the least -- with regards to whom she relinquishes her music to. There have been a few "best-of" collections on CD; however, none have been sourced from the "original and authentic MGM analogue masters." Nor can they boast 40-plus tracks with a total running time of over two hours. James and her husband/musical director Tony Acquaviva were responsible for a somewhat unfathomable string of hits -- including over a dozen in the Top Ten during her first year with MGM. Additionally, her multi-million-selling single "There Goes My Heart" was the very first 45 rpm record to be cut in stereo. Trivia aside, James' success is truly her own, as she picked all the material she chose to sing and even retained her master tapes -- which was simply unheard of in the late '50s and early '60s. As a vocalist, Joni James maintains an ageless purity and wholesomeness that practically defines pre-rock & roll pop music. Yet she has a very modern sound, as her arrangements are tasteful -- rather than the grandiose nature usually associated with orchestrated pop. "Is This the End of the Line?," "I Still Get a Thrill," "Maybe Next Time," "Everyday," and "Wishing Ring" are delivered with an uncanny freshness. This defies the often cookie-cutter and otherwise generic standards of a Doris Day, Jeri Southern, or Julie London warbling over a cascade of syrupy strings. A glance at the track list of Platinum & Gold: MGM Years reveals hits and nothing but hits -- many of her 45s were double-sided chart-toppers -- including "How Lucky You Are" b/w "Give Us This Day"; "Am I in Love" b/w "Maybe Next Time"; "Everyday" b/w "In A Garden of Roses"; and "I Get a Thrill" b/w "Perhaps." This is indeed a collection that will thrill her first generation of fans, as well as garner her the well-deserved respect in the years to come. ~ Lindsay Planer
| | Mosquitos CD (2003) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Iron Mics album
$41.75 MOSQUITOS is the 2003 debut from the same-named band from New York City. Their approach combines the quirky tunefulness of indie rock (think of the Bats, Beat Happening, Heavenly) with the cool, sleek Brazilian pop of Sergio Mendez and Astrud Gilberto.
Maybe Chris Root really did get his love of Brazilian music in the womb, as the publicity for this record claims. Wherever it came from, it's real, although his playing is more a sketchy American approximation of the subtle rhythms of samba and bossa nova than the real complex thing. Not that it matters. His songs here, on Mosquitos, have an aura of joy -- often childlike -- that's echoed by the voice of Juju Stulbach (very breathy and seductive) and the keyboard work of Jon Marshall Smith. Root's Brazil might be, to an extent, an imaginary creation, but he loves playing there, and songs like "Mosquito" and "Boombox" have a soft energy and a sunny vitality. To be fair, none of it would work properly with all three people. Alone, Root would sound a little too naïve, too much like a kid scrawling in a book. His excesses are tempered by the others, and the result is some glorious pop music that's more Brazilian-inflected than really Brazilian proper. Root does get in a love song with "Juju & Blue," and "Pure Like Snow" is a gorgeous little piece. It might not be the American/Brazilian fusion of Arto Lindsay, but it works on its own terms, neatly crossing cultural and geographical boundaries. In their own quiet way, Mosquitos are quite revolutionary -- and great fun. ~ Chris Nickson
Japanese pressing of the Brazilian inspired rock act's 2003 album includes two bonus tracks, 'Dragonfly' & 'To Fora'. Imperial. 2004.
Japanese edition with two bonus tracks.
Recorded at Studio Eclipse, Rio, Brazil and Vic Thrill, Brooklyn, New York.
Mosquitos: Juju Stulbach (vocals); Chris Root (guitar); Jon Marshall Smith (keyboards, programming, samples).

Iron Mics CD music
