I'm a musician, songwriter, singer, and home-based recording studio owner, who has been playing *something* ever since my parents bought me a snare drum when I was 4 years old. (What in the world were they thinking?) Eight years of piano lessons followed, along with some high school friends who helped me get a handle on playing the guitar. These days, I play keyboards, guitar/bass, and drums. And I'm as happy being sequestered in my home studio as Lindsey Buckingham, Prince, Peter Gabriel, or Paul McCartney -- all important influences on my music, though their inspiration may be pretty hard to hear at times. My tastes are pretty eclectic. . . so I have a wide range of influences. Probably the biggest pop/rock influence was and is The Beatles (as a group as well as solo songwriters/performers), followed by Queen, Mike Oldfield, Gerry Rafferty, Abba, ELO, Prince, Kate Bush, Shakira, Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, Fleetwood Mac/Lindsey Buckingham, Larry Norman, Keith Green, Daniel Amos (a group, not a person), Sinead O'Connor, Emmylou Harris, Joan Jett, Sam Phillips (AKA Leslie Phillips), Goldfrapp, Imogen Heap, K.T. Tunstall, Evanescence, Amy Grant -- and on and on and on. And I'm discovering wonderful new artists all the time -- as well as older artists I somehow overlooked during the last 40 years of pop/rock/r&b history!Given the above roster of artists, you can see that I’m really all over the map when it comes to what I like. And that’s reflected a bit in “This Hummingbird.” I realize that can make things tough for folks who are trying to decide whether to spend money on someone they haven’t really heard and have never seen perform. (Apart from playing in a band at church, my music is entirely studio-based.) So, I’d encourage you to give a listen to the samples included here. You’ll hear everything from a pop/dance tune (“Worthless Girl”) to Def Leppard-inspired classic-rock guitars (on “Brighter Day”), from an acoustic folk song (“Bodee’s Rendezvous”) to a “pop”-py paeon to my favorite TV witch, Samantha Stevens.I recently read an editorial in a recording magazine in which the writer said something to the effect that, “if you’re writing all of your music on your own, recording everything on your own, and producing a CD entirely on your own, is it any wonder that you’re the only person in the world who actually likes it?” Since I do write, perform, and record everything myself -- and, of course, take full responsibility for the results! -- those were pretty sobering words. But I’ve heard from enough other listeners to know that’s not the case with “This Hummingbird.” I hope you will be one of those listeners who enjoys listening to it as much I enjoyed creating it. This Hummingbird
$9.35 The Cherry Tempo live in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Not really big fish in a small pond, but fish out of water, completely out of their element in a town used to listening to the blues, cover bands and house music, with barely a shadow of a rock scene in sight. After graduation it is nearly impossible to be young and afford to live in Santa Fe. Which is why Javier was so obliged to stay when the apartment deal of a lifetime literally fell onto his lap. He wanted to move to Seattle. His boss wanted him to move to Indianapolis, somehow stubbornness or fate intervened. Dave was looking for a place as different ...

| | Barry Lawton Brown Lipstick CD (2005)
This Hummingbird
$18.99 Barry Lawton is a singer songwriter, hailing from the sprawling metropolis that is Crewe, South Cheshire. He has released two albums, 'Enough To Go Around' released in 2001 and his 2003 release entitled 'Brown Lipstick'.Lawton specialises in well-crafted intelligent pop tunes with the emphasis on melody and lyrical punch. If you're looking for mystical sojourns into introspection, then you've sadly come to the wrong place. 2001's 'Enough to Go Around' was recorded between December 2000 and March 2001. Largely recorded with an acoustic feel, the album included Lawton favourites such as the spellbinding 'Grow Together' the classic pop of 'Prettiest Face' and the moving 'Beautiful'. The album was recorded with only a small nucleus of players, which featured Barry Lawton on guitar and vocals, Norman Barratt on bass, additional guitar's, drums, and in between all of this the production and mastering of the album. Keyboards were played by the seriously talented Chris Gaskill, and to keep the family vibe alive, the album was engineered by Norman's son John Barratt. The album was received well when stripped back and performed solo and acoustic live. In the creator's opinion, the songs shine and take on a life of their own away from the studio. This album was followed up in 2003 by Barry's latest offering 'Brown Lipstick' recorded again between December 2002 and March 2003. The album retains the same core unit of players, but has a much more rounded and fuller sound. 'Lipstick' incorporates a variety of styles and themes, ranging from the Motown influenced 'Climbers' classic pop of 'Paths Unlaid' to the bluesy rock feel of 'The Night She Bit The Bullet'. Subject matter covers love both lost and found, the onset of age, and choice social and economic commentary on the likes of 'Jobs for Life' The potential of Lawton's voice shown on the first album, is embellished further on tracks such as the closer 'From Here to the Past' stripped bare with just piano and vocal. It is worth noting that some of the finest moments on the album, feature the exquisite Piano/ Hammond Organ playing of Chris Gaskill, which add that extra dynamic to the strength of the songs on the album. Lawton has played live anywhere that will take or appreciate ...
