| | Jeff Group Goldstein Waltz For Susie CD Jeff Group Goldstein Discography of CDs
Pianist Jeff Goldstein leads his quartet through 11 original jazz compositions on the new CD release Waltz For Susie. The Jeff Goldstein Group features the rhythm section of Phillip Crump on bass and Kevin Teachout on drums, along with Moveable Feast saxophonist Peter Vircks (all of whom appeared on the 2003 debut CD Mount Jazz). Goldstein's melody-driven writing style sets a laid-back scene adorned with shades of bop, blues, Latin flourishes and Arabic twists. Waltz For Susie also includes a sole vocal track, with Gospel great Robert Robinson sitting in on 'No Matter What' (lyrics by Tom Lieberman of the acclaimed Rio Nido). Mid-tempo jazz can be a deceiving musical form. It's often thought of as 'Sunday morning' or 'cocktail' music - and it most certainly serves those purposes well. Goldstein's knack for crafting a memorable tune seems to keep these songs on the mind long after Sunday morning or the cocktail hour has passed. From the serpentine, Charles Neville-like lines in 'Gazpacho' to the romantic phrasing on the title track, Peter Vircks' tenor sax lends a sublimely compelling voice to Goldstein's compositions. "Jeff's writing and playing are both unique and subtle. He approaches the piano with a calm confidence that makes this recording sound authentic and inspired. The band is polished and supportive, and saxophonist Peter Vircks performs these originals as if they were classic jazz standards. Hopefully some day they will be!"-Laura Caviani, pianist composer and educatorThe original songwriting is splendid on the Jeff Goldstein Group's new CD of melodic modern jazz...Minneapolis Star and Tribune. | | Herb Alpert What Now My Love CD (1966) Remastered; Special Edition
Waltz For Susie CD music
$9.99 With this album, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass settle into their hitmaking groove, the once strikingly eclectic elements of Dixieland, pop, rock, and mariachi becoming more smoothly integrated within Alpert's infectious "Ameriachi" blend. They sound more like a band now; along with Alpert's now-indelibly stamped trumpet sound, we can recognize jazzman John Pisano's distinctive rhythm guitar, Lou Pagani's piano, the droll Bob Edmondson's dulcet trombone, etc. Pisano, who debuted as a composer on Going Places, comes up with a ...

| | Steve Tyrell This Time Of The Year CD (2002)
Waltz For Susie CD music
$6.09 Steve Tyrell has attracted enough attention for his two regular albums, A New Standard and Standard Time, that he is almost beyond journalists' usual tack of describing a new singer's voice by who he sounds like; pretty soon, they'll be saying that other singers sound like him. But it remains true that if you have never heard him but you are familiar with Dr. John, your first reaction upon hearing him is likely to be that you are listening to Dr. John. Well, maybe a younger Dr. John, and one whose accent isn't quite as swampy. But the basic elements -- the grit and gravel in the tone, the slurred, deep South phrasing -- are much the same. Of course, Tyrell comes by the sound of his voice honestly, hailing from Houston, TX, and boasting a musical career (albeit, behind the scenes) as long as Dr. John's. But it remains true that Dr. John got there first, and so the comparison remains inevitable. As on ...

Waltz For Susie CD music
$16.45 Lenny Marcus hails from Washington D.C. and worked for many years in New Orleans and south Louisiana. While there, Lenny had the opportunity to study with world-renowned jazz educator Alvin Batiste at Southern University, as well as the legendary jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis, among others. Perhaps the greatest influences came, however, from the strong left-handed, blues-oriented pianist Ray Bryant, to whom Lenny grew up listening, as well as the more modern, modal approach of McCoy Tyner. His bluesy, vocal phrasings remind the listener of a young Mose Allison, with a little Michael Franks mixed in. Lenny also brings his own unique style, providing a fresh innovative, and highly creative approach to the jazz listener.Lenny is featured on several albums, including six as leader: BAT IN THE HAT; the widely acclaimed REMEMBER INFINITY; the 1998 CD ...
