Trios songs
$10.69 Tito Puente and Woody Herman teamed in 1958 for a mutually satisfying meeting in the same way that Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Machito found common ground in the late '40s. Puente's Latin rhythms and beats meshed with the swing and bebop of Herman's band on half of the disc's cuts, and the results were hot and delightful. With Puente heading the rhythm section and playing timbales, Robert Rodriguez on bass, and assorted percussion from Gilbert Lopez, Raymond Rodriquez, and Ray Barretto, the band stays locked into the Latin groove while the saxophonists and trumpeters weave in, out, and around the beat. There are also more conventional Herman swing numbers such as "Blue Station" and "Woodchopper's Ball," where the standard Herman stomping sound is in effect. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Sheb Wooley That's My Pa CDs (1998) (Import) Import; Boxed Set; Germany
Trios album
$103.85 This box and its 113 songs cover the years 1945 through 1972, and the least known side of Sheb Wooley's career, but the one where he started out -- as a country singer and songwriter, first fronting a Western swing-style band and later working in the straight commercial Nashville style. Warning to casual Sheb Wooley fans -- there's no "Purple People Eater" here, or any sign of Wooley's "Ben Colder" comedy alias. Most were never on LP, and only a handful have been available in decades. The first ten cuts on this box, dating from 1945 and 1947, reveal him as a talented, smooth Gene Autry-type singer with more depth and range, with a good Western swing band behind him. On the MGM sides, beginning in 1948, the music is more polished, and the mix of songs is weighted more toward sentimental ballads. The middle section of this box shows us a fascinating set of possibilities -- starting at the dawn of the 1950s, Wooley began merging Western swing with some components of R&B; his music could easily have moved toward rock & roll, but Wooley evidently wasn't comfortable making that jump. The material from the 1960s and early 1970s is utterly polished, and some of it is beautiful, commercial country music, using all of the smooth Nashville techniques. The assembly of the discs is also strange, mostly owing to the fact that after 1961, a huge amount of Wooley's studio time was given over to comedy tracks as "Ben Colder," leaving big gaps in his "straight" output for years at a time. The accompanying booklet contains a finely detailed account of Wooley's career. ~ Bruce Eder

| | Ray Barretto Homage To Art Blakey CD (2003)
Trios album
$13.85 Where does one go from the top? Ray Barretto through his years collaborating with the most important names in jazz and giving some of salsa's most notable musicians their start has become the most notable conguero around. No one has done so much for the role of the instrument, either by way of notoriety or for its musical role. Where does one go from being the most notable living conguero? In Barretto's case, the answer is that, like a true master, you pay tribute to the masters who went before you. In his 2003 Homage to Art (Blakey & the Jazz Messengers) Barretto looks back on some of his favorite compositions from his days as a fellow percussionist/bandleader. It is becoming a well-worn path to cover material from our jazz forefathers thanks to artists like Conrad Herwig, Brian Lynch and others, who've done a fine job reworking classic material to swing en clave, but the opportunity to hear it done by one of Latin jazz's genuine pioneers is rare and precious. With a lineup of New York's cream of the crop, including Luis Perdomo, Miguel Zenón, Hans Glawischnig and the slightly lesser known Vince Cherico and John Baily, Barretto's tribute is far from a museum piece. The concept is established and Barretto is a king, but the music is still plenty fresh and daring. When a master pays homage to a master, it's something worth hearing. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

| | Chris Pureka Driving North CD (2004)
Trios CD music
$11.39 If the Lilith Fair tour/festival were still in existence, Chris Pureka would certainly have been asked to be part of the roster. With her acoustic guitar and understated voice leading the charge, Pureka's sound and style sound very similar to such Lilith veterans as the Indigo Girls -- as evidenced by 2004's Driving North. The follow-up to Pureka's 2001 self-titled EP shows the singer/songwriter penning songs that appear to be autobiographical from a lyrical standpoint -- tracks such as "Silo Song" and "Porch Songs" focus on the theme of growing up in a small town, while "3 A.M." and "Afterall" focus on relationships. And although several guest musicians dropped by the sessions, Pureka's voice and guitar plucking and strumming remain the focal point throughout. ~ Greg Prato
[ Originally published on: Thursday, May 06, 2004 ]TALES OF NORTHERN CLIMES: Northampton songwriter Chris Pureka's new CD, ''Driving North,'' arrives with the chill of a retreating winter's last exhale. In its sparseness, her recording seems a woman's updating of Springsteen's ''Nebraska.'' The 11 tightly coiled compositions ride low emotionally, but rock with rhythms of the road. A performer like Pureka gets to see a lot of the road these days, now that she and her guitar are in demand - she has dates next week in Oregon, where she will open for Kris Delmhorst and headline at a women's festival. Tonight, though, she enchants a hometown crowd at the Iron Horse in Northampton, with a 7 p.m. CD release party. (Meg Hutchinson opens; tickets are $13 at the door.) PUREKA'S PLACES: ''Silo Song,'' on the new CD, uses that farm building as a metaphor for the place people shovel secrets, storing away hurts that need air and sunshine. ''3 A.M.'' extends a plaintive, late-night plea for reconnection with a missing friend. The title track ''Driving North,'' which closes her disc, charts a course away from the fortress of someone's disregard. The best company, on Pureka's dispiriting ride, is the artist's ability to draw a personal voice from the strings of her guitar, a talent best displayed on the instrumental ''Reprieve.'' ...
