Composer and critic Tom Johnson had a long career on the experimental music scene, often creating works as strongly concerned with conceptual ideas as with the resultant music. In most cases, the two were complementary; in The Chord Catalogue, well.. In his notes to the piece, Johnson writes, "It is not so much a composition as simply a list." One must give him points for honesty. The Chord Catalogue consists of all 8,178 chords possible in the middle C octave. It begins with the 78 two-note chords and ends with the single 13-note chord. These are played in an absolutely regular, unvarying rhythm without the slightest inflection, no sustain, and only a brief pause between sections. While the first selection goes by painlessly enough, as the number of chords mounts (up to 1,716 for the six- and seven-note chords), listening becomes an increasingly arduous task. One can imagine a certain transcendence being achieved in a live situation with overtones buzzing around one's ears, but on disc, it essentially amounts to Johnson's description: a list. The work is decidedly difficult to play and the composer assures the listener that mistakes are inevitable, but there aren't enough noticeable mistakes to breathe life into this concept, far more intriguing in idea than in execution. ~ Brian Olewnick

San Diego's Fattburger is one of smooth jazz's elder statesgroups, and could easily rest on their laid back laurels if they chose to. Instead, the powerful playing and eclectic tempos of All Natural Ingredients combine to create one of their most hard hitting works to date. A good deal of the new energy comes from snappy electric guitarist Evan Marks and Hollis Gentry, an original member who guests here with cranked up, jazzed out solos on flute and sax. While laid back softies like "Till Then" have the trademark feel, it's the firepower of hypnotic urban jams like "Coronado" and "100% Fatt" which kicks these ingredients into high gear. Tommy Aros gets zesty Latin percussion workouts on the feisty original "Do That Again," while Gentry and keyboardist Carl Evans (doing the blues) fuse to make their version of "Oye Como Va" one of the wildest in recent memory. Another well-read cover, the summery shuffle of Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule The World," rounds out what amounts to this band's revitalization as they enter their second decade in pop-jazz consciousness. ~ Jonathan Widran

Nattens Madrigal (Madrigal of the Night) purports to be a concept album about wolves, the night, the moon, and the dark side of mankind, but it's difficult to tell, partly because the album was allegedly recorded outdoors in a forest. But even without the resulting sound quality, Ulver's music is so fast and ferocious and the vocals so garbled (and in Norwegian, at that) that it's best just to take the sheer sonic force as reflecting the band's concept, rather than trying to piece it all together. ~ Steve Huey

Too relaxed to be true rock & roll and not quite ambient, Auburn Lull's debut CD, Alone I Admire, is more like symphonic space rock for the horn-rimmed set. The album is epic in scope, drenched with lazy keyboards, ethereal guitars, and synth-heavy textures. Songs move at a turtle-crawl pace, with shambling noise and sleepy attitude. Vocals on most songs are either non-existent or play a small, mixed-to-the-background role. The track "Old Mission" owes as much to Arvo Part as it does Spiritualized; with its stark cello and ever-shifting patchwork of synthesizers, the piece swirls along, foggy and brilliant. On a few of the numbers on Alone I Admire, drummer Jason Weisinger uses brushes rather than sticks, creating a jazzy, early Verve feel. Andrew Prinz's production suits the compositions well, mixing somber bass tones with the occasional piano flourish or drum loop. On "The Last Beat," tambourines and guitar intertwine to pleasantly diffuse the cold synths, adding organic warmth. While not as adventurous as labelmates Asha Vida and Mahogany, Auburn Lull has produced a fine debut and their best music to date. ~ Dale Nicholls

Donald Harrison has had several musical identities in his career. Best known as a post-bop altoist who played early on with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, a quintet that he co-led with Terence Blanchard, and his own jazz groups, Harrison has also been interested in hip-hop, smooth jazz, rap, and funk. His sound on alto has always been original and he has an open-minded approach to music. However, although The Power of Cool has been called "a smooth classic," in reality this CTI extravaganza has Harrison mostly cast as a bit player despite the fact that he is supposedly the leader. Recorded during producer Creed Taylor's comeback years when he attempted to bring the revived CTI label back to the former glories it had reached in the 1970s (that dream did not last long), Harrison is mostly confined to moderately soulful melody statements. Vocalists dominate half of the selections, the arrangements and compositions are commercial and quite forgettable, and Harrison sounds like an anonymous studio player, even on a simplification of Lee Morgan's "Ceora." The presence of trumpeter Wallace Roney and guitarist Larry Coryell only helps a little, while Jimi Hendrix's posthumous appearance on "The Wind Cries Mary" seems a bit exploitative. At no time do these performances rise above the level of pleasant background music, but fortunately Donald Harrison has recorded many much more rewarding CDs in his career. ~ Scott Yanow

My Name is Alex Balla and I’ve been involved in music since I was in the second grade. I got my first guitar when I was seven and I’ve been playing ever since. For the past few years I’ve been writing mostly pop and folk songs, but recently I have been taking my music in a different direction. Using a notation program and Garageband I have been able to compose and edit classically influenced electronic works. I do mostly everything strictly by ear, including the compositions I have just released in my first album entitled Shine (*IMPORTANT* 'Shine' is currently being sold on mini CD's). I have a sparse background in theory and mostly let the music take the direction it wants to go in. I still write pop and folk songs and I still play my guitar everyday. Hopefully in the near future I’ll be releasing tracks that fuse classical composition and electronic music with the pop and folk songs I’ve been writing for most of my life. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it.
